Based on the points you made about plant names and practical origins and commercial beginnings, etc, what about after Snake plants being called SANSAVERIA for years and years what or who decided that their genus was actually Dracena? Who and why the change of some philodendrons to thaumatophyllm - Xanadu for example? Also, I have a Hilo Beauty that has been called an Alocasia, Colcasia, and a Caladium? Thanks for any and all clarification.

🤩💜 great questions thanks for asking! Most of the reclassifications you see happening in the past few decades is because of genetic sequencing, where scientists sequence a ton of plants and essentially reveal a better understanding of the structure of the family tree they’re looking at. So for dracaena/sansevieria, researchers found that they are genetically much more closely related than they appear despite physical differences.
Usually these findings that propose reclassification end up meeting a lot of resistance from expert hobbyists and non-scientist professionals in the industry whose experiential knowledge gives them a different opinion about how the plant should be classified, plus sellers like to use whatever name is best known.
Sometimes the problem is deciding where to draw the line between categories like genera/subgenera, like with philodendron/thaumatophyllum, thaums used to be a separate genus originally and then got reclassified as a subgenus of philodendron, and then re reclassified back to it’s own genus, but I believe there is still a lot of disagreement on how to define them exactly.
I dont know much about the history of taro classification off the top of my head but I believe with alocasia/colocasia it has to do with genetics as well, and having slightly different flower structures and reproductive incompatibility even though there are instances of hybrids.
I hope some of this is helpful! 😊💜 Thanks so much for watching have a great planty week!🌿💞✨

I was given a PPP in 2020. I put it on a pole and chopped it replanting both in the same pot. It is now approx 36inches and still gets those wonky leaves from time to time. It has continued getting pink on most leaves. Not my favorite plant because the leaf size is small compared to the internodes. The leaves are slowly enlarging though. Also have the white princess because I saw one on the Plant Haven utube channel which was large and very nice. Mine is small and not climbing yet. I have a small white knight which seems to be very slow growing with not much white thought its stems are highly varigated. That one will find a new home, I hope this summer. My husband spent $75 on the PPP which at the time seemed outrageous. Little did we know.

I found monstera thai constellation at my grocery store. I was so excited. All the plants had at least four large leaves. They were only 29.99!!!! I have found some great plants at my grocery store and at deep clearance prices too! Found lots of pink princess at Walmart and both times I've found them in clearance sections. Due to the pots being broken or moving old inventory out. Also found an albo pothos which I've never seen before. So I added it to my cart too. Great video! Love seeing what you find!

I envy your finds! Your Pink Princess is gorgeous!
Nothing nearly as special, but a few days ago, I bought a Ficus Tineke Ruby at the grocery store, on clearance, for $2.97. I grabbed it up, separated the two plants that were in the pot, and brought one to a plant swap on Friday. It was my first plant swap, but it was really fun to make someone happy with a plant that cost me almost nothing.
Thank you for sharing so much knowledge with us!

I have a white wizzard, bought it on facebook and was listed as white princess but I was sure it´s a wizzard even before I bought it. Mine has more round leaves than yours, so the leaf looks a bit more like your knight, but it has absolutely no red or pink anywhere. Mine also definitely grows small aerial roots, but it has a very small inter nodal space. I think it looks like a slow climber that will be able to support itself for a long time. I will chop mine in spring and decide later if I give it a stake or moss pole.

Before I became a sahm I worked in fruit and vegetable research. We would often still say vegetable, even to each other, when something was really a fruit because some people would be confused. But the way we would explain it is well some are true vegetables and some are just culinary vegetables.

100% the naming is marketing, but can be neat to have a collection of them. I have a White Knight that has almost gone full dark green, almost like the PPP, and I want to call it a Dark Knight.
As far as identifying, the petioles are the first I look at to ID, then the leaves. Red petiole with white sheath, White Knight. All red petiole, PPP. Green petiole with white sheath, White Wizard. Green petiole with pink sheath, White Princess.
The White Princess and White Knights can have pink variegation on the leaf, too. It's random, but very beautiful when you get a nice tri-color.

Hey there! I think I remember someone, probably on another channel, said that emerging leaves can be damaged during stress, especially shipping stress and can be damaged. As for what you were saying, My opinion is that during the rare plant craze, somebody had these plants and just took advantage of the boom and started selling them. These plants just don't seem to be all that great, not with reliable variegation. They just don't seem to have a lot of traits that would be desirable to a knowledgeable collector. Have you ever seen a picture of a magnificent mature plant of any of these? I'm willing to bet they don't exist, because these plants are genetically inferior.
