Quick & easy repair to your old ALICE pack lid

  • Recently I posted a very extensive video about the medium and large ALICE pack system. During that video I covered how on many of the ALICE packs on the surplus market their top rubberized lids are deteriorating due to age. After posting that video a few of my viewers commented on a quick and easy method to repair the old lids. After testing the method myself I found that it was %100 legit and is a great DIY easy repair. I was so impressed I decided to try to help get the word out to my fellow war fighters out there! Thanks again to those viewers of mine for providing me with this great idea.

Since you have the flex seal, here's a bit of tip from a construction worker. Spray the bottoms and backs of your carry cases (tools, personal belongings, etc). When your stuff moves from vibration or the station it's on is mobile, it'll stick to it a bit more and will have a harder time to run on you while you're busy with your task/project.

I was on active duty from 1982 - 2004. the only packs that I was issued, or I should say regularly issued, was a large Alice pack. now there was a time in the late 80's when the army gave certain units a Mountain pack. but as a paratrooper those didn't last more than a couple months as they could not be jumped safely.

My two ALICE packs I have from 1982-1993 USMC are far superior than the cammo ALICE pack I was issued in the Army in 2000 or so.
Both USMC tops are still mint and need no attention.
My Army issued cammo one the top liner is basically powder and getting all over everything.
Gonna give it a good wash and then use the flex seal to seal it.

Thank you for sharing another good use for FlexSeal. I would also like to share an idea I got from another CZcamsr: using FlexSeal to apply a thin durable "grip tape" to AR magazines. I have used it on both steel mags and PMAGs and am quite happy with the results. Be sure to mask off enough of the top to ensure the FlexSeal does not rub inside the magazine well and hinder insertion/removal. Also, mask off enough of the bottom to ensure the floorplate can be removed. I have had good results with 3M blue painter's masking tape. If the PMAGs have a round-count window, mask that too. The FlexSeal seems to deaden and quiet down the noise the magazine makes when it hits something (gear, mag well, ground, etc), especially with a couple coats.

This is a PSA I did this to my Medium Alice pack, make sure to get all the factory rubberized coating off the lid before. My Alice pack had a lid that was just starting to peel and I tried all I could to get it off with about 25% of the lid still covered with the original rubber that wasn't ready to come off. The areas where the rubber was peeled off almost immediately after letting it sit for 24 hours it made it a lot easier to get the remaining old rubber off but you'll have to re apply to cover the areas that peeled off. Otherwise great solution.

Just picked up a 1988 woodland camo Alice pack for my collection. Surprisingly it's the first pack I'll need to try the flex seal trick to. I have several packs now, somehow they keep finding me! Would be cool if flex seal made a OD green. That would be awesome.

My old issue pack is showing the same signs. I was going to try rubberized automotive undercoating or Plasti Dip spray but neither one seems ideal for various reasons. I do have a can of Flex Seal though and this just made up my mind. What a perfect application. Thanks Brent!

This technique works great. I finally got around to repairing one of my packs with zero waterproof material left. I used rustoleum spray rubber. A little talc added after everything dries keeps the rubber or paint from sticking.

Your absolutely correct about those rubberized inner liners smelling like vomit. They smell like that even when they are brand new. Good thing that smell doesn't get into your clothes when you stuff those liner bags.
I tried baking soda and it worked to get rid of the smell. So no smell, but, had baking soda all over my gear. I guess the general rule of thumb is to get something, you have to give up something. Can't have your cake and eat it too.
My ALICE large pack top flap deteriorated too. Along with a rain poncho. Flexseal to the rescue! Hope there is some OD Green color.

Brent, I just found your channel a week or so ago; I have to admit that I was perplexed at first about your interest in Vietnam era gear in the first video of yours that I watched. I was thinking; why would one of the new corps marines be so interested in our old so called obsolete field gear (hard corps) (ya you know, us old corps, the ones that had twice the PT requirements and we did real sit ups, and we thought that our body armor was when we took cover behind our big balls!) (just a "little" burn on you "new bees"). I think that the USS Boxer was also on the float that evacuated Vietnam from March through June of 1998. Back then I was still using the older 782 gear setup for web gear.(oh, FYI, the web belt in your video with the snaps around the center it is called a "pistol belt") Any way; I have trunks full of what you scrounge to collect, I got issued my "new/ never used medium Alice pack in June of 1978, I still have it and it's still ready to go! I got a couple of those big liners that you showed by convincing a couple of Army reservists on their two weeks in the summer that they didn't need them, and that I would "get ride" of them for them! dam, the reserves are dumb! I gathered most of my collection when I was the motor pool maintenance inspector at both the 3rd and 1st Div's. Everybody knows that when you turn in your vehicle for maintenance that you remove all gear! Dam, their dumb too! One General that was returning from 29 palms had his driver drop his M151 off at the motor pool for Maint. and was rather upset when his field lantern set disappeared from the back seat. "It must have been those other drivers from operations SIR!" I still use those lanterns with my GP small tent when I deer and bear hunt, going on 45 years now, never had to use the spare parts yet! "True story"...Lt butter bar and Capt butt hole busted me one day for obeying orders from a Navy Commander, (out ranks them both, "together") (oh I had a secret clearance, and the Capt. was jealous, when I checked into the company he raked me over the coals about it until my TOP "MSTRSGT" called him out and shut him up) Dam their both dumb! So I wrote a letter of appeal to the battalion Commander, "a Full Bird Coronal" He received my letter about fifteen minutes after the said Division Commander, " the General" called him to congratulate him for having the "only" Marine that received a "Noteworthy" result on that weeks FMF PAC inspection that worked for him at Headquarters Battalion 1st Mar Div. That Marine was none only than Cpl. me, myself, and I ! And he also notified him that next week the HQ Marine Corps Quantico, was sending a teem of 3 officers to study and implement Marine Corps wide, the system that I developed to track and validate modifications on every vehicle that my motor pool was responsible for! .....Long story short; Lt. butter bar and Capt. butt hole were ordered never to interfere with me again and I was also given a cushy job as the new FMF PAC Inspector for Motor T at the 1st Mar. Div. !............ So any Officers out there reading this;... NEVER F...WITH YOUR NCO's! They are SMARTER than you are!....WE RUN and OWN THE Marine CORPS!..............Have fun with your channel Brent!... CARRY ON MARINE! ...Semper Fi
