This series documents my attempt to ride a unicycle 674km across the entire width of Latvia. I’m alone and unsupported, wild camping along the way. If this wasn't challenging enough I'm also sticking exclusively to an off-road hiking route, named the Baltic Forest Trail! (This trail also goes through Estonia and Lithuania. This man’s literally got himself sponsored by an entire government
what a guy
Clever marketing move by the government
@@apinanraivo100 Brilliant move, I'm looking into booking a trip to hike it myself!
Great country to cross 😊
What a beautiful country. I wonder if it there's a more rideable route for bikepacking though
@@137lllThere actually is - look into Green Railways (Zaļie dzelzceļi in Latvian) - those are routes created where old closed down railway lines used to be (the rails and sleepers removed of course)
This is what life should be like, the simple joy of having that fallen tree to sit on was beautiful. Loving the story telling, good luck with your journey.
To all who are worried or fearmongering: Ed posted on his patreon that he's editing the rest of the videos and taking a break till 2024.
It's on the community tab too.
I was worried i miss the videos but don't rush it Ed take your time 😊
Came to say "He ded?" so THANKS!
You know what i love about Ed.... Clearly either a vegan or vegetarian... but doesnt shout about it and virtue signal.... He just does his thing
That oily stuff on the lake water is actually peat from the ground. Since these parts are pretty swampy that's what gives lakes and rivers that brown-ish color. Your skin also feels a little sticky after you swim in those waters but it's generally harmless.
Your foreshadowing at the end about "crashing in the silliest of ways" - you're on a unicycle, everything we do is silly :). I unicycle some in the Alberta rockies and watching you is giving me the bug to go riding again but there's too much snow at the moment. If you ever get the chance to ride down a hill in deep powder, do it!
Packed down snowshoe trails are awesome for muni, some of my favorite riding :D
The first mushroom was either a King Bolete or a bay bolete, both prized edibles. Second one amanita
So it could be delicious.. or it could kill you?
Latvia is breathtakingly beautiful!
Almost nostalgic after watching the round the world trip. Love it Ed!!
beautiful country. Really liked the single track. I am very near 70 years old but I can hear my trapped 40 yr old pushing to get a unicycle and head to the nearest woodlot. Soooo much fun. All the best on the rest of the trip.
Curious, why don't you travel with a water filtration system like the LifeStraw Gravity Bag? They are not that heavy nor take a lot of room but they work amazingly well and keep you healthy.
I wondered the same, but saw on the last video he has a tin full of the purifier tabs. As long as you are patient, not that bad.
Possibly a sponsorship with the tabs?
@@loganclark2146they would have said as well as mentioning the brand more
your drone shots are like paintings, so beautiful! such a wonderful series, truly
I enjoy the 10% of you that is like Alan Partridge just as much as 90% that's not. Good work - you are making light of an arduous challenge 👏
It's the simple things on a trip like this with wild camping that mean a lot. A dry log to park your bum instead of sitting on the ground. Well done Ed.
OMG LOL ED I LOVE HOW YOU LITERALLY ONLY KNOW LIKE 3 PHRASES BUT SOMEHOW YOU GET BY. xD
Its always the best feelings to sit on a different surface, rode 60 miles the once on my bike and even a park bench was a welcomed relief to my bottom 😅
9:30 I have been thinking that.... The packed unicycle is almost prefferalble to push while walking as opposed to carrying all your gear in a backpack like on a normal hike....
It seems so smart I am actually having ideas about making a "Hiking wheelbarrow" - like a regular unicycle, but instead of a saddle there would be a luggage rack and then with a pair of reversed wheelbarrow handlebars, maybe a bit wider apart than yours....
Not a bad idea actually...
A suspension fork and front wheel for a 24" fat-tire bike might make a good starting point. Reasonably cheap, pretty robust, and they should be a fairly standard diameter at the top for mounting other things to. A fixed steel fork might be preferable though, as you could weld to it pretty much anywhere on the length of it without impacting the functionality.
beautiful you and beautiful Latvia, the country of my childhood memories
Such a beautiful country ♥️
Really makes me want to travel, simple pleasures
Ed you mad bastard. Thanks for being ace and inspiring me that life is still an adventure.
You are a great ambassador for Latvia!
Beautiful forests with its own mossy carpet! Super cool video!
:o THREE WEEKS TOTAL AND YOU ARE ONLY ON DAY FOUR?!
Yep, wonderful isn't it! That's my entertainment sorted over Christmas New Year and beyond!
Wonderful episode. Truly stunning country.
The mountain uni guys from the US leg of your world tour will be very proud of you, Ed. Lovely stuff.
Ed my guy are you good? 5 days since a video got me stressed
Check the community tab.
hey Ed, Watch out for that.... root 😬
it's always the [choose one: root|rut|dead-fall_hidden_in_grass|mail-box_that_jumps_out_of_nowhere] that gets you
I'd like to think this latvian investment is a LOT more efficient than cheesy ads nobody pays attention to anymore.
love the videos man!
Love this! Thanks for sharing another adventure Ed!
Keep gettin it Ed!!
I really enjoy these videos. Keep up.
Amazing Video as always!
Makes me happy to see you on unicycle journey's again!!
Really enjoyed this on Ed. What a beautiful country!
Fantastic to see you back on the unicycle again. Excellent series of films.
Ed, it is always a joy to travel with you. You bring so much to so many. Thanks.
this cinematography is absolute stunning mate, looking forward to the next episode
these videos make me smile always. Thank you
fascinating once again
Damm I'm legit thinking to do a cycle trip on this route
Great videography, looks like you had some good weather!
well done!
Love you my brother i always feel happy to watch your videos
Great adventure! 😍
Great stuff!
Amazing segué into the sponsor read there from 0:35 on! At least it gets it plenty of attention, right
cant wait for the next video
Love your videos!
Been following you since your world tour Ed, just wanted to say that I really admire your enthusiasm and laid back attitiude to travel. Also just wanted to comment for the algorythm because you deserve it. Cheers from a 47 year old Aussie.
Awesome 👍🏻
Holy crap, I missed your visit to Latvia... Hope you enjoyed and were warmly welcomed.
Great videos as ever, gets me every time the amount of effort required to film riding off in to the distance only to go collect the camera afterward, don't know about anyone else but i'd be fine if you just didn't do that anymore xD - enjoy the ride!!
Have you thought about doing THE GREAT DIVIDE MOUNTAIN BIKE ROUTE? Longest mountain bike route in the world!
Awsome. Come to Norway next time
wait a go ed!!!
Loving your journey! Encourages me to get out and make my own adventures (albeit on 2 wheels!) Just a bit hot here in Australia at the mo!
You should try a straight line challenge like how GeoWizard does them it would be really interesting and you definitely have the skillset.
I can tell already you got this 🎉
When your arm is swinging pov style, I find myself joining in 😂
Hey dude, I love your videos. Congrats on another expertly-documented, dope adventure. Have you ever thought about doing the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route? It's the longest off-pavement route in the world, and it would be the achievement of a lifetime to do it on a unicycle. Just a thought, but regardless, best of luck in all your future adventures.
Hi Ed, thanks for your great videos. When can we expect the next upload on Patreon ;) Can't wait to see episode 5 :)
The houses by that cafe remind me of Moomins!
Those trees are beautiful
You and Steve Wallis aught to do a collab of some sort if you're ever in Canada. You two seem like you'd have good chemistry. Both very nonchalant, calm "stop and smell the roses" kinds of folks. :)
Just out of curiosity, having seen you stop for water in this and other videos, is there a reason you dont use a packable filter like a Sawyer Squeeze or Katadyn BeFree? Seems like it would help you not need to worry about your water supply as much!
So beautiful....
Another lovely day on the baltic trail, i will cycle it one day for sure ! How did you managed all the content you made during the trip ?
Built different
Have you gone vegan, Ed?
If so: big ups!
If not: still love your videos! 😉
It's hard to tell but the water from that lake may contain bog oil (microbes breathing iron if I remember correctly) definitely worth looking into as they are quite interesting.
Should know alot more Latvian words by the end....beautiful scenery and drone shots....not sure about that water.....bravery star for sure....cheers
I added carrots to my pasta to try it out since seeing it a staple in your camp meals.
How much of this route could one ride with a top quality 26" expedition bike? It looks like most would be o.k. for riding (slow), with only some stretches where you'd need to walk the bike. -- It looks fantastic!
If that was Scotland those forests would be thick with midges. Seems a pleasantly midge free zone!
that mushroom was a penny bun they're delicious
He just had to jinx himself saying he hadn't crashed.... SMH
😂
I think you really could have used a water filter. That water looked nasty.
14:31 jinxed it, didn't you?
nice choice getting away from cars. this make ME feel better. :)
sometimes you eat breakfast, sometimes breakfast eats you apparently
Did you find the brake useful in that technical section? Also, what length cranks are you using?
Weirdly when riding singletrack I hold my handle with my left and balance/wave with my right.
I wonder if Ed is ok? Been a while since the last upload for this journey now
He posted on patreon that he's editing the rest of the videos and taking a break till 2024
@1:43 it might be tree resin/sap (hopefully!), not that you want to drink that either.
Good morning from New Zealand. Ed, what's the total rolling weight of the new rig? wonderful seeing you back on the wheel :) Cheers ScottyB
I don't remember if he did mention it on a video before this series. Perhaps you could check it.
7:29 that could have been dinner mate!
Porcini :)
I've been intrigued to find out why you do not seem to use a water filter on your trips? Boiling uses quite a lot of fuel and takes time. The pills are nice and light but you have to use clear water. The weight and size of a filter system is something to consider but I don't really see you as an ultralighter. Just curious.
Thanks for a lovely video!
Hey Ed, is that possible that i saw you yesterday in hungary?
hi ed
how are you going at end last vidio thing might had a crash
barry
Next episode when? :)
i love this nigga like you wouldn't believe
still no one trailing along - I am curious when you will meet some hikers
He's still quite far from the most popular areas of the trail. He should start seeing more people in a few days as he reaches Gaujas National Park which is probably the most popular nature reserve in Latvia with lots of trails and beautiful river cliffs (as far as you can talk about cliffs in a country as flat as Latvia).
What crank length are you running?
These ones are 150s. Same as what I used for 99% of the world tour
Just wondering how you do the videos , have you already done the trip an just uploaded the videos weekly or if you record it the same week you post it
It's now winter in Latvia (quite cold, with snow and everything) so it can't have been recorded recently. He mentioned fallen trees due to a recent storm. We did have a massive storm in the beginning of August, so that would make the trip to be around late August - early September. Judging by the weather, that seems plausible
I think it is obvious he is not unicycling right now, it is winter after all. And how could he upload videos not even talking about editing them in the literall woods
Almost looks like you're slacklining on there.
Ed
Hey Ed! Are you allowed/able to ride those trails on a bicycle?
well the video is sponsored by their tourist board, so...
Yes! I have ridden most of the section NE from Riga. Apart from ocasional stairs you can cycle all the time.
I wonder how does he keep his electronics charged
i think he's covered technical stuff like that in an old q&a vid
In LV you never are actually more than 10 km away from some gas station.
