If you've been on a benzo for a long time and stop suddenly, Hydroyxzine won't stop the withdrawal effects of the benzo. If you start hydroyxzine first, then, I think it will reduce anxiety. But one shouldn't stop their benzodiazopine sudenly and switch to hydroyxine.
My doctor did EXACTLY this. I had been taking benzos for a solid 1.5yrs (4mg/day) then all of a sudden decided he's not prescribing them anymore and gave my hydroxyzine. You're welcome! That is an adverse effect, and if you have more sympathetic responses to anxiety, a beta blocker may be better tolerated. A good conversation to have with your doctor.
