I challenge anyone who thinks Dan is just a premier studio musician to listen to Giant and not be gobsmacked by how close he was to becoming a huge rockstar. If he’d arrived in LA a decade earlier, his vocals alone would have filled arenas.

The 3 Giant albums he did are amazing! I'll listen to Giant at least once a week. His playing is brilliant and his vocals are even better. Perfect melodic rock records. And he produced a Megadeth album!

Dan Huff is the Real Deal. Giant's 1992 album Time to Burn is still my go to album. It is a perfect rock album. Stellar musicianship, amazing songwriting, Incredible vocals and the engineering/production is out of this world.

Same here! I discovered Time to Burn at a thrift store maybe 10 years ago and was blown away by the craftsmanship. I was blown away a second time when I dug deeper and found all of his session work. He is a master

Dan Huff is a highly respected musician, songwriter, and producer in the music industry, particularly known for his work as a guitarist and producer in the country and rock genres. He has played with numerous artists and bands, including being a founding member of the country rock band Giant. Huff is also renowned for his production work, having produced albums for artists such as Faith Hill, Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, and many others. His contributions have significantly influenced the sound of contemporary country and rock music.
The greatest thing about this interview is seeing how much Dan gets excited about all of this stuff. The topic at hand is like, the REAL endgame final boss guitar work as it applies to songwriting, arrangement and production. Doctorate level. Thank you for bringing this out of him and giving him a platform to really breakdown this stuff.

Most people won't know this but Mutt grew up in South Africa in the 70's. During this time the country was in cultural isolation through apartheid and got very little international exposure. What did make its way through was a few 70's rock bands, some abba and a lot of country music. Combining this with local folk styles resulted in a near perfect format for what AOR internationally would later become and Mutt defiantly was influenced by it and it formed his blue print. After he left SA to work in the UK the timing of the NWOBHM and his formative influence would almost certainly have fitted perfectly and Mutt honed his sound to what we now know as his formula. You hear it in Def Leppard, Bryan Adams and even the Corrs and Shania Twain. Very melodic, almost country like in areas but enough meat and potatoes to be basic rock and roll. Giant was huge in South Africa and it resonated with a lot of fans there, now we know why...
Mutt is a treasure!

Dan is an unsung guitar great. His Giant albums are incredible and his solos both ripping and tasteful. I've never forgiven myself for not catching the band when they came over and played Southend, Essex.

This is fantastic dude, I love hearing Dann talk about his work. I discovered Giant's Time to Burn album about 10 years ago at a thrift store (without knowing anything about Dann), and was blown away by the sound and craftsmanship of the album. Then I dug deeper and discovered how prolific he was at session work and was blown away a second time! He is a master.

Incredible interview. Truly one of my favorite songs. It was really refreshing to hear the story about her union with Mutt, who I admire a lot and it's a shame there are no Mutt interviews.
I would like to comment that Mutt in that year, in addition to the obsession with country music, also had it with the gypsy music of Spain. In addition to working with Dann, having done it with Paco de Lucia in "Have you ever really loved a woman" proves that he only works with geniuses, and Dann really is. Thanks again!

These are such great videos!! Hearing Dann's insight is fascinating. I was a huge fan of Giant and then I went back and read what Dann had done, then followed his career from there.

Dan talking about all of those dynamics in producing/recording with Mutt. But teaching less experienced musicians those type of dynamics in a band context in live performance, is maybe not as meticulous, but equally important. When to play, when not to play, what volume, tone, how to follow a singer, etc. This is what makes a good producer i.e. Michael Omartian.

What a great Video (or better said, what a great series of Videos) with the wonderful Dann Huff. Back in the day I was very much into Huff & Lukather. When these two names appeared in the album credits I bought that damned record.... 🙂... and was never disappointed. Example: I still love Bob Scaggs "Other Roads" from 1988. Dann had a huge impact on this record. As much as I love his Solos, I spent hours and hours listening carefully to his rhythm work, how he crafted his parts, how he literally "made" the song (same for Lukather). These guys so damned good, they just know what a song needs - and they are able to DELIVER. Sidethought: After all these years I am still amazed that so many people who say/write they "...love the man.", "...he is my idol..." still don´t know that it's DANN and and not DAN... What a weird superficial world, isn't´it? So thanks for this Video & a huge Thumbs Up!!! Cheers from Germany. Michael.

He played lots of guitar solos in many Sergio Mendes CDs in the 80s ( Confetti, Brasil 86 etc. I wish he could take us there: those sessions with Segio as a producer and a player and Joe Rizzullo. Good old days

So Dann is one guitarist that I can almost peg in the songs that he played, there is one guitarist that I get confused with Dann's style and that was Michael Landau. Thanks for the follow up post of the interview. He did some interesting work in Spanish styles with Selena which I am surprised he didn't mention.
