Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Review - What A Thrill

  • Following the breakout success that was 1998's Metal Gear Solid, Konami and Kojima quickly started to work upon a sequel - a game that would prove to be a benchmark for Sony's at-the-time coming PlayStation 2 console.
Barring the surprise change of protagonist from Solid Snake to Raiden and contentious plot, there's very little debate about whether Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was a worthy successor to the original. With multiple solid entries in this tactical espionage action franchise, expectations were naturally high for whatever Kojima and his team were planning to do next with the IP.
Kojima wanted to develop the next installment in Metal Gear Solid for Sony's upcoming PS3, but had to develop it for the PS2 instead since there was still a long time before the console would come out. Legions of fans waited with bated breath for a long time, and 2004 finally saw the release of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
You see, unlike 1998 - the market wasn't completely devoid of any promising stealth games on consoles. Konami's offerings were directly competing with the likes of Splinter Cell - despite the many differences in the design of these games. Still, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater absolutely floored fans and critics who unanimously praised the game for its gorgeous visuals, highly dynamic gameplay, and of course - the memorable boss fights.

The gameplay, the stealth, the feeling, the plot, all the little intricacies, the politics, a masterpiece of a game. When I think of realism and survival one of the games that pops up into my head is MGS3. It doesn't have to be a 4k graphics game with in an in depth crafting system to be "survival" and it doesn't have to be a hardcore FPS to be "realistic." The way you interact with the world, despite how linear it is, was so immersive. Managing your resources on harder difficulties, deciding between risking it for an item or just sneaking past danger, all the different ways you can go about every area, tripping an alert and just barely staying alive, and so many more amazing mechanics and experiences all bundled into a PS2 game. Imagine that.

As far as gameplay goes, and especially time spent in the game at this point... V might be my favorite in the series, even if the story was underwhelming
But every time I think about proclaiming that phantom pain is my favorite, I feel dirty, because this game is not just my favorite metal gear solid, but it was one of my absolute favorite games that generation.
I wasn't even the biggest metal gear solid fan. My first entry into the series was the second game, which was just a total mindfuck of an introduction to metal gear solid. I still enjoyed it though, it was really cool to play. But I only ever beat it once other than that all of my time was spent replaying the tanker section as snake
After that I played the twin snakes on gamecube, and I absolutely loved the hell out of that game. Beat It multiple times.
But then Snake eater came out, the game play is better, I like the setting better, I liked all of the stuff with your camouflage system, sneaking around the jungle setting, I liked the more simplified story compared to even the original metal gear solid story, and I liked big boss so much more as a protagonist. Snake is a badass, and he was definitely really cool to take control of.
But big boss is just more charming, he's a little bit naive in this game, and has this cheeky sense of humor about him that just makes him more endearing to play. And the story hits that much harder by the end of it knowing who he's going to become
This game is just amazing. The boss fights might have been a bit of a step down from the prior to games overall, but experiences like the long walk by all the enemies you've killed to get to the sorrow, the beautifully poetic fight against the boss at the end, and then especially the fight against... Well The End. That might be one of the coolest boss fights in video game history. There's so many methods to beat him that are all pretty unique. I would put him right up there with the psychomantis fight as far as metal gear boss battles.
I've heard rumor that this is actually the one they're going to remake. I have mixed feelings about that. This is a game that I would want to closely mimic the original in design and layout if it was remade, don't try and force open world crap into it. Open world design barely even made a difference in phantom pain, all you're going to do is just fly the helicopter to all the different sandboxes to mess around in.
This game is so perfectly structured in both level design and narrative. If they could really just kind of keep that but update the visuals and controls... I would never play another game in my life. As it is I do find these older titles a little tougher to go back into. Really three would be made a lot better for me if there was just a damn crouch walk. Trying to replay metal gear solid 2 starts to make me wonder how I ever dealt with that camera
But no matter what I will always hold mgs3 as one of the greatest games ever made

It's strong from beginning to end.
That being said, I really should give 4 and 5 more play time.
It just really felt like all aspects of the game were tight.
The story was less esoteric than other MG titles and so I enjoyed the narrative much better, from beginning to end.
The ending, (to this day tied with my favorite DQ8).
The mechanics were solid as well and made the game slick to play).
The environments, set pieces, and graphics were phenomenal as well. Furthermore, the boss fights were great (I usually dislike boss encounters). I hope at some point, Konami pulls their head out of their ass and offers a proper next gen remaster of all the 3d MG titles. I would love to see this title at 4k 60fps.

If you spin Snake around in the menu enough times, he'll throw up in-game! It's little secrets like that, which highlighted a new level of detail Kojima would strive for. Graphics will always age, play mechanics will always evolve, but with an outstanding narrative and characters, brilliant art direction, and just incredible attention to detail and a sense of style audio and visually, you have the recipe for a timeless classic.

I never played MGS3 before and almost bought the MGS3 stand-alone release on PSN Store. But what is holding me back is the upcoming MGS Delta: Snake Eater possibly releasing this year. From what I see the core gameplay is the same just redone in Unreal Engine 5.
So with that being said, is it recommended that I hold off for MGS Delta, or not?

I didn't know what was going on within Metal Gear Solid 2 at the time, I never got a PS2 until 2002 and about a year later, I had to borrow Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty from an aquantant of mine.
That same year, I learned that Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes was in development and I wanted a Gamecube to play that too and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.
Wish the actual Game Footage was 60 FPS.

  • @robertoprestigiacomo253

Well, it was competing with other stealth action games, but back then every stealth action game was a copy of Metal Gear Solid so there was little competition. Furthermore, I don't think in the game industry there's much competition because buying a game doesn't prevent you from buying another game. There might be competition in terms of comparison, reviews etc but not in terms of marketing. Splinter Cell in particular wasn't a direct competitor because they were games released for different consoles and back then it wasn't normal to have different consoles unless you were a nerd adult or a very spoiled kid.
5:48 - I would add that there was also a fixed camera (in this video the footage is from newer versions where they included a modern free camera, but it wasn't the case in 2004) which made predicting enemy positions harder.
9:34 - This statement hurts so much when I think of what they did in MGSV.
10:54 - Now that Kojima doesn't work at Konami anymore I really hope they won't remake it!
