Metal Gear Solid 1 Review

  • The year 1998 can be considered as the single most important one for stealth games with three important hallmark releases of the genre - namely FromSoftware's Tenchu: Stealth Assassins and Konami's Metal Gear Solid having been released during that year. While all three of these franchises boast meaningful contributions to the stealth genre, Metal Gear Solid remains a franchise that has remained relevant after all these years. Furthermore, many of the biggest stealth franchises such as the likes of Splinter Cell even owe their very existence to Konami's 1998 breakout hit.
It's been almost 24 years since Metal Gear Solid first burst onto the seams, and the game is still being actively discussed by legions of fans around the globe on account of its many advances in game design and narrative elements. While its age has certainly taken away a fair deal of its charm, it remains one hell of an experience nevertheless. To that effect, we are taking a look back at Metal Gear Solid 1 all these years later.

@@webhead4414 HELL YES it has, MGS1 was a (pardon the pun) game changer, and will go down in history as one of, if not the GREATEST games created, and was a staple in the gaming industry..I mean, this game is such a testament of how gaming can be a mature and not just for kids, and still tell a compelling story..many years from now kids will be learning about this game in history class, haha. (which is kind of ironic, and would make sense since so much of real world history is told in the games) Who says games can’t teach you anything, ha.

I just played it again this past week for the first time since I was a kid. This was the first game I ever played where I thought I was playing a movie. The dialogue was well written and acted out. The boss fights with Fox Hound, ninja, Metal Gear Rex were EPIC. At the time, this is the best it got. That being said, I forgot how hard it was at some points, and muscle memory of later games betrayed me when I tried cqc and first person aiming. So in a way, it was like I was playing it for the first time. Kojima was gaming god overnight from this one.

I like the fact that they’re remembering MGS 1 but rating a game that came out 25 years ago with today standards is ridiculous. When this game came out it was a 10/10 and it’s considered a masterpiece. They didn’t have the technology we have today and all these game engines that are super realistic. This is one of the games why I’m still a gamer and I’m 34.This is a Bullshit review, this game is a 10/10.

Yeah I would still rate it 10/10 even by today's standards. If you throw modern graphics onto it then the gameplay soundtrack and story still hold up 100%. If the only problem is the graphics then play the twin snakes. I still rate it a 10 just for how different it is gameplay wise to most "big" games that come out these days

For me this will always be the best game ever made, yes it’s short by todays standards but in terms of gameplay and story telling it is a 10/10 I played this when it first came out and it has aged like a fine wine.

Also, the voice acting is very monotone. That said, I don't quite understand why people hate it so much, with a passion it seems, even to a point in which it offends them.

Dude MGS1 is mindblowing, right from the start, the rats running around, the reflections in the water, the amount of optional codec calls you can trigger at specific times. What i love about metal gear is that it discourages using a guide, if you want to figure out what to do, you call members of your crew, each with different specilizations, like a weapons expert, evvoirmental expert etc.. it really feels like you're a real spy on a mission. The amount of work they did even on every camera angle when pressed up agaisnt a wall or kneeling near a corpse, is insane. MGS1 is a masterpiece imo.

MGS 2 was my first exposure to the series but I did experience this amazing masterpiece soon after.

Why doesn't this have the subtitle still a masterpiece? Disrespectful of the greatest MGS game ever...this game was and is still Legend and Epic, the one that started the solid saga, gave us all the 4th wall amazing experiences...best snake, best support cast best boss unit, best villains, best story and best soundtrack with the best epic ending theme....this game had the double, triple crossing and the plot twist...and Gray Fox! There will never be the another moment like when MGS graced the scend in 1998... nostalgia and timeless memories that every cinematic video games owes to it

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was like 12 yrs old. And I had a short listening span.
I remember coming up from the elevator and finally walking on snow and finding the socom gun.
After days trying to figure out how to get in side I went up stairs while alarms were going off then crouched into the wall by mistake and found the vents to crawl in.
I finally learned chaff grenades blinded CCT cameras.
I also remember I had no idea how to find Baker then on the codec they kept saying something about paint over the walls.
I was so young and dumb I didn’t even know how to blow up c4 but eventually I blew up walls and found baker.
I also remember after the tank fight after escaping with Meryl this game feels just like a movie and started falling in love with snake.
Then when I came up to the fight with psycho mantis I started to feel scared and actually thought my tv was hacked lol.
After days of asking friends how to beat him I learned switch the controllers. His death scene and last words really hit me.
At this point I was pretty educated with the game and story line but having to go back to get that sniper rifle was tense. By time I got back, had the sniper wolf fight I learned I’m caught, Tortured and then prisoned.
I had no idea what to do with the tomato sauce. Until I laid down and hit circle lol. Breaking out felt cool.
I also remember trying to get out of the caves was so stressful till I found a tiny hole to crawl through.
After shooting down liquid on the towers I felt so tuff.
Eventually moving onto disc 2 I knew this was already my favourite game.
The ninja kinda scared me but after fighting metal gear Rex and seeing the ninja friendly and helpful it made me so Angry and mad against Liquid seeing him crush grey fox.
I remember bending so desperate to kill Liquid.
Reaching the end of the game driving out while shooting into the car crash I was wondering why Liquid wouldn’t die.
I listened to all the fox die codec calls and couldn’t understand why I been used as a living biological weapon to kill who ever I’m in contact with. I felt like rat bait to poison other rats.
But finally after hearing Liquid say his final words “Foxxxxx!” Snake. “Dieeee”. I was so proud.
He had a heart attack lol. And I ended up with Hal.
Then the credits made me cry. That song touches. 10/10.

This game is the reason why I am a lifelong fan. It always will be a 10 out of 10 no matter how advanced video games go and one of the most important video games in history. 1st played mgs on a demo disc in 1998, got hooked and my brother bought the game for my birthday a few months later. Spent many hours having fun. The cinematics, voice acting, characters, story, music, its all good and so memorable. I honestly believed I was stuck when I came to psycho mantis but figured out how to beat him. Its a series that has gotten me through some tough times. One of the few series I'm very passionate about 👍

While I think that MGS3 is the best of the series, this game earns my respect for what it brought to the gaming table. It was the first time where there was a legitimate case for a video game being seen as an art form. Stuff that is commonplace today (such as cutscenses that uses the in-game engine as opposed to pre-rendered graphics) was revolutionary back then.

  • @TheBeholderist

These days I was playing the Legacy Collection on PS3 and MG Rising, also hearing their stunning soundtracks. For example, MGS4 Act 5 alert theme "For Liberty" was such a game changing piece of music that puts you on the final edge of the action. It still give me goosebumps and chills on my skin every day. PlayStation brand is not PlayStation without a MGS game in its catalog. Definitely needs to come back, at least in the form of a fully a mind-blow remake in UE5. MGSV gameplay was on another level. If they incorporate MGSV's gameplay, with the strong narrative of the past games (don't care if i need to watch a 30-45 mins cutscene), then it could be the god tier MGS game for the history.

if it's true that this game is getting the remake treatment, then it should be entirely built in something like Unreal Engine 5 using photo realistic textures where in still shots you can't tell if it's in game or a picture of a real location. this will pay homage to how the original game tried to look like a movie in the 90's
