Being a veterinarian is a surprisingly dangerous job. No matter how good you are with animals (and I'd like to think my cat handling skills are pretty up there) once in a while, they get you! I was very nearly blinded a few days ago, so join me for that story, and several other tales of animal assault adventures.

I was holding our cat at the vet while he tried to clip her nails, when her Kitty Timer ran out. Then somehow I had a cat on my head, bunny kicking my face and throat and chewing on my scalp, I'm not quite sure how she teleported up there.
As you said, our fault, not the cats fault at all. And my poor vet was horrified, kept following me around saying it should have been him that got it. That might have been logical, but cats don't do logic when they're upset :)
Net result was actually not too much damage for all the noise she made. Hurray for clipped claws! And my vet very bravely kept her on as a client for the rest of her wriggly, fighty, un-cooperative life, for which I am endlessly thankful.
But yes, perhaps safety goggles should be standard gear? My glasses certainly helped save my eyes :D

We had a cat that wouldn't use any scratching equipment we got him so his nails would get so long they'd curl back and injure his feet. We'd take him regularly to the vet to have his nails clipped and my mom always had to hold him while the vet worked. He'd hiss and snap and growl through the entire procedure. He was a really good cat though, he never scratched anyone but the vet

Hahahaha! What a sweet story, in a horror-film kind of way! My cat has only once in his 12 years taken a swipe at me, and indeed it was because he was nervous and a bit upset, and not his fault even slightly. It never is. I can never blame an animal for being upset and angry. 😻

    • @amrita4468

I am not brave, but I cut all 4 of my cats' nails every week. "Spa Day". Stressful for me, but three of them come willingly as I shamelessly bribe them with treats. The only way I can do it is to sit them on my lap like a child and wear strong dollarstore reading glasses. They aren't lap cats, but they will sit like that knowing the reward is to come. My first cat will be 8 this summer and she still pulls out the Marj Simpson voice. I'm a bit scared of her even after all these years, but I work fast with her and she can't be too stressed because she hangs around for brushing and treats after. They were all difficult at first but after a month or so of squirming, they figured out that goodies would follow. Even with cutting their nails weekly and having 2 cat trees and countless scratchers of all different materials and both vertical and horizontal, they have destroyed a couch and the carpeting on the stairs. Very frustrating. If anyone has suggestions for how to stop that or other undesirable behaviours, I'd appreciate suggestions. They know it is wrong and only do it when I am not home or in another room. Both my eyebrows and eyelids are intact. 😉

My cat has scared the crap out of a couple of vets in his day. He's a nice cat, but not when he's scared. He can quickly become so wound up and unapproachable that not even I am allowed to touch him.
It's unfortunate, when he was younger he liked going to the vet! But they wanted me to leave him there in the morning so they could perform tests throughout the day one time, and apparently his behavior changed entirely once I had left(breaks my heart).
They made the right choice by not trying to do the tests they had planned for him and just calling me to come get him. He was totally in the murder zone when I got there, he was making demon noises at me too, and I'm his favourite person. Very unbecoming of a cat with a name that directly translates to "Purry Rosey-snout".
But I brought a tasty bribe and asked him to give paw, and I think the familiarity of his favourite treat and being asked to perform a trick he enjoys put him in a better mood.
The vet tech looked at me like I was the cat whisperer. Imagine though, a cat acting like they're possessed by literal satan, even hissing and growling at the person arriving to pick them up... And then that person asks the cat for a freakin high five, the cat actually does it, the person puts a crunchy nom nom in the cat's mouth and it's like none of that mean kitty stuff ever happened and the cat now even wants to politely greet the members of staff that he prevously tried to... Ya know... Dismember. Everyone pets him in complete disbelief, we all agree that we can probably try this again tomorrow with me sticking around until he's safely sedated, and we go home for the night.

    • @crystalanderson1770
      @crystalanderson1770 Před 2 lety +9

You're describing my cat perfectly. I call it "full exorcist mode" when she gets like that - demon sounds, the whole works. Even when I take her to cat-friendly vets, she needs to be fully sedated for even the surface-level checkup - so we do ALL THE TESTS in one go every time. Poor baby.

Many years ago I adopted a huge white cat, a really powerful animal. One night, probably within a week of adopting him, he bailed up a neighbor’s cat. Stupidly, I tapped him on the back, after which he turned his attention to me. He launched himself into the air and attached himself on my forearm, biting, scratching and kicking madly. After I managed to pry him from my arm, I noticed several puncture wounds on my arm. Despite cleaning the wounds, I felt a warming sensation creeping up my arm, which could only be an infection. A visit to the GP, several shots of penicillin (in the bum!), and my right arm in a sling, for six weeks. Turned out to be a fantastic cat, I still miss him to this day.

Ouch! In the late '80s I was directing a play in Brussels (I live in France) and my contract stipulated housing where I could take my cat. The cast wanted to meet this Famous Kitty, so I had them around for drinks. My black cat sat on my lap enjoying the adoration of over-the-top thespians, and started to stroke my chin from underneath. When I looked down lovingly, her back-hand sliced across my cornea. Well, his was a whole new world of PAIN, akin to sliding down a razor blade, etc. Also, I had to wear a fetching "John Ford" eyepatch for a month whilst gobbling innumerable painkillers. Since then I have warned my vets, and kept a tight grip on my feline patients.
Glad to see Mr Pirate looking well, and your good self neither blinded nor eye-patched. Keep up the good work. Love from my 5 French kitties and moi.

I have recurrent corneal erosion, where my cornea can rip when I open my eyes when I first wake up. It hurts so much more than one could imagine! I’m so glad your injuries were small and not your cornea!!
I adopted a stray cat in my neighborhood. He was a Russian Blue. I started to get to know him by feeding him (and other strays in my neighborhood). Before a big snow, I put a box with a blanket under a porch overhang in my back yard to help him deal with the snow. I went out to check on him, and found he had an abscess on his neck from a fight.
I took him to the vet to get antibiotics. After they fixed him up, I brought him home and kept him in the house. (He already knew my other cats from visits outside. After dinner, I put him on the table, to brush him, and he seemed to like it very much. But after a few minutes, he looked me in the eye, and seemed to suddenly remember all he’d just been through, and he hit me on top of my head. HARD! No claws, but it HURT! He walked to the other side of the table, then walked back. Sat down, then hit me in the head AGAIN. I said, “OW!” and said “what did I do wrong? Did I hurt you? I’m so sorry!” Then, he rubbed his head against my shoulder, and he never did it again. He lived with me 15 more wonderful years!

I was bitten by the same dog twice (didn't make me afraid of dogs, though). I was around 5, I think and it was my fault both times because I woke him up. I remember that I walked into the house after and was taken to A&E after I got cleaned up because I was so surprised the first time.
I got a Tetanus shot both times and most of the injuries disappeared some time after. The only reminder is a permanent scar at the right side of my upper lip. I'm proud of that, to be honest. Makes me feel cool and badass. :D

Or... my personal rule is to never leave young children and dogs together unsupervised. Even if there is no history of biting or rough play. Just have a care because lives are too precious to invest a little care.

My partner grew up on an acreage in a rural area and found an injured cat on the family property one day. Being an animal lover and wanting to help, he approached the cat and tried to touch it. With its literal last dying breath, the cat reared up and sunk its fangs into his hand, dying almost immediately after. He was sad about the cat and didn’t think too much of the injury initially, but within a few hours the hand had ballooned up to twice its normal size. Luckily he got antibiotics and other than minor scarring had no long-term damage. I remember that story whenever I meet an unknown cat and always try to be cautious and read their body language!

One time I was at the vet with one of my previous cats who was incredibly sweet.
The vet’s assistant loved him, but at one time her and the vet had to draw some blood, he had an hyperthyroidism, and my cat dug one of his claws in her arm. I think at that point he was just fed up with all the frequent vet visits.
So she was stressed and in pain, but still calm: “Bert, Bert, Bert, hold on a minute, his nail is in my arm!”
The vet was drawing his blood, he couldn’t do much. So I took my cat’s claw and gently removed it from her arm.
It probably happens all the time, but for me it was a little surreal. I did not have “dig your cat’s claw out of another woman’s arm” on my calendar that day.
He wasn’t aggressive, just got startled for a moment and grabbed onto her arm.
My current cat, and previously also his sweet sister, is a total sweetheart. The only time he’ll scratch me, is when he’s playing underneath the blanket I keep on the couch.
But immediately stops when I Eeek. And only play bites, as in, his teeth might touch me during playing, there’s no pressure.

Cat bite is so real!! I once had a stray cat in my garden who decided to have her babies there. She was not used to humans but as the days passed by, she realized we were not dangerous but generous, she let us to touch her head.
The vet told us to spay her when the babies had 45 days old and so I did. Oh God when I tried to lift her... She bit me haaard and her claws were deep in my forearm. The vet was in the same street to I continued with the task, I asked my grandma to open the cage and when I arrived to the vet I was bleeding a lot, my legs were shaking, I was so week. My wounds got infected, it was hot in that region and very inflamated. I still have scars of her after 5 years.

Last year in March I was volunteering with a cat rescue. The cat escaped and hid under some shelves. When I grabbed it it bit and scratched like a little black tornado. I was bleeding and in pain but I thought it's just a cat bite/scratch, not that bad. Fortunately I called my sister who is a nurse and she said you better get antibiotics. She ordered some for me. I took them and felt sick but better than losing a hand or something. My one finger bled for hours. Another finger swelled up. I had a huge bruise on my arm. Even a little cat that's not fully grown can be dangerous, I learned that then.

I got there just as it opened up, the doctor heard there was a cat bite, didn't make me go through triage, just made sure I wasn't bleeding and could wiggle my fingers and that the cat had had all her shots and prescribed me a course of antibiotics.
My finger was already starting to swell by the time I got there. Her former humans had apparently never taken her to the kitty dentist, and she later had to have four teeth out.

Having lived in SUFFOLK- UK in a tiny village of 200 people for 14 years, I looked out of our cottage, suddenly there was a beautiful face looking over our low hedge, a beautiful face of a cow.
I got up, went out and saw more cows approaching us and neighours.
We tried to guide them to a saver place, while someone phoned to find out , where they were coming from.
They were on the run and came from another village.
I am and never was cowgirl and one of the wonderful cows tread on my foot. I was " singing" ! Luckily it was only a heavy bruise and for a while I could only wear slippers on that foot.

Years ago I has something similar, my cat was in the bed with me and I was looking at her - the issue was that one of my eyes doesn't close because the bones aren't in the correct place and the stare must have upset my cat and she reached out and scratched me. The lid was scratched, but I was fortunate as well, as the eye was ok. Really threw me and I realised that no matter what your relationship is with your pet, you still need to take care.

The farmer said when you're feeding cattle in the barn, don't get trapped between the animal and the feed trough or you risk serious injury. If you do, grab their tail high up and bend it to cause pain and hang on. Use them to push the others away. Either that or a thumb up the nose for a similar result. Great advice that thankfully I didn't need to use.

I had a cat who had an episode some time back and she started hissing, growling, and shrieking bloody murder in the middle of the night. I eventually determined it was due to severe back pain (blood work, x-rays, a neuro visit and an MRI later), but not before she launched herself across the room to attack me. You know what's fun? Having your much-loved pet take a serious swipe at your arms and legs. She broke four of her claws off in my feet/ankles/hands. But we got her on pain meds, and (after she completed her at-home quarantine) we lived happily for the rest of her life.

Great stories. Her paw sticking up near the end aww. I remember when I was 5 I was sticking my face into a neighbors cats personal space and got scratched from my forehead to my cheek, the claws luckily bounced over my eyebrow and didn’t hit my eyes. Completely my fault, and I’ve never had a bad experience with a cat or dog since, until last year. I was staying with a friend who has a very large (100+lb) and unpredictable dog with food aggression. He had to have a muzzle most of the time, we couldn’t leave food out, etc. I joked that he was a police reject because he looked like the type and he would go for the arms. Well he got a slim Jim wrapper from my trash when I left my door open for a moment, I instinctively went to grab it and he went for my arm. Considering how big he was he actually didn’t cause that much damage, just tried to get control to ease his anxiety IMO, but he still ripped a hole in my shirt. It wasn’t until I was checking out the hole that I saw it actually went past the shirt and into my bicep a good 3/4 inch. Which was still only half of the tooth or so. Could have been much worse. I still don’t blame him, but I was glad to move out of there to not have that level of stress every day. I miss my cat, but she’s with my mom, and has bonded with her/comfortable in the space. I can’t take her away from that, as a semi feral kitten rescue it took so long to get her to trust anyone or anywhere other than me and the inside of my sleeves. I do really miss her though, and my childhood doggo who died two years ago, and the cat i rescued off the street who slept in the bend of my knee every night for about half a year before she got out and didn’t return when I stayed out one night. 3 animals suddenly not in my life in a short span of time, 😿 but one had a long life, one is with my mom, and one I hope is doing ok with some other family. I love them all, they helped me through some dark times in my own life and I tried to do the same for them. The rescues take a lot of work and patience but it’s so rewarding.

And oh my did he get mad. As in "kill the world" - good thing he was a little German Terrier and not a strong big breed.
But then came the time to take of the muzzle... And he was still madder then a hatter.
About 0.05 seconds after the muzzle was removed he forgave us and was a happy little cuddly terrier again!
