      There safety regulations which effects the platforms etc. Also cost efficiency.. This video is to show some analysis. There are still freedom on design and we need to push those boundaries 🤙

      @@BerkKaplanDesigner What have been considered a modern or sporty car has changed with the times. This is both obvious in concept cars as well as in production cars. So though you attempt to deduct some general rules for what is considered an attractive car, is not as universal as it seems. Just considerer the attitude in the 1980': Sporty was a low roof line wide body and square rear. So a car designer back then would base their concept cars on different proportions and sight lines.
      The car chassis serves 4 purposes: #1: It is the structural base of all other components, so it needs stiffness and torsion properties, that is sufficient and argument the suspension, yes cars flex. #2: it must provide suitable ergonomics, door size, height, visibility. #3 occupant crash safety. as well as for other trafficants. #4 the last and not the least: Energy efficiency =low weight and as small a cDA as possible. So if designs were purely engineering choices, cars would not look as they do now!
      So that makes a proportion study, a study in fashion. However fashion sells, so it is a legitimate consideration, but it is like clothes fashion designers doing sketches based on geometrical shapes to catch the current trend, i.e. it is purely an artistic exercise.

      @@Tore_Lund I showed a method to analyse general proportions of cars. It is helpful for people who struggle with it. Sketches without some basics lose the attention even if there are good ideas there. So this video meant to help them. Obviously it is not for all type of cars and it is not detailed engineering/design lesson. 😀😉

    Hey Berk, I deeply enjoyed the video, thank you! I’m a graduate mechanical engineering student looking to become a studio design engineer at a EV company in the future so this certainly helped. I just have a couple questions:
    - Are these proportions standard across the industry? Like do the product designers follow these general proportions when sketching each time? Of course they would be different depending on the type of vehicle however.
    - Are there also proportions for the front, top, and rear views that designers follow? Would love to see some videos on those too.
    Thank you for your time and insight.

    • @BerkKaplanDesigner
      @BerkKaplanDesigner  Před 4 lety +18

      I'm glad you like it! These proportions are different for sengments and type of cars. They are evolved by safety regulations, ergonomics and cost efficiency. During the design process designers work depends on package. So this video is a little guide for general idea for hatchback cars. There are many more things going on :)
      I'm planning to do videos about different sections yes so stay tuned for upcoming stuff :) 🤙

    Great Video Mr. Kaplan keep them coming please, but Yes because most car segments have similar proportions and they start to look exactly like each other. How hard is it to differentiate from the competitors. Also with new electric tech, you could remove front bonnet volume, but maybe others will copy that too.

    This is a good start for a series. In your introduction you said proportion can make a car look,
    "Stronger, more premium, or sportier".
    So if you do decide to build on this introduction, I would like to see some examples that show how a car's strength or status or sportiness can be modified, while at the same time showing examples of how proportions have been (maybe) violated in the past, and yet are still very popular and even admired by people in the know.
    I realize that this is no small request, but it seems that you are precise enough in this video that it seems like you might be up to the challenge.
    Thanks.

      Hi Nicolo, it is for this segment as well. Every segment might have different proposals and I created my online car design course to teach all of these and more, here is the link to my course if you want to learn how to sketch cars like pro; gumroad.com/l/bnkgN/45voelq

    I legit thougt, the BMW was the X1 not the hatchback. This is my gripe with modern car design everything seems to be getting bigger and taller. I do wonder, is it regulations or consumers wanting SUV-like cars even if they are buying hatchbacks. Or are buyers just too old to want to buy cars where they have to sit down low in a car.

    • @BerkKaplanDesigner
      @BerkKaplanDesigner  Před 4 lety +1

      I think its a bit mixture of all. Regulations affect a lot for sure. Also for many countries, costumers like suv-like feeligs..

    This was Mega helpful! damn you explained important terms yet in a simple way that was awesome👍 Keep posting more videos! Please do video of sketch & render tutorials of automobiles and motorcycles also product design and shoe design. Been following you from long time on instagram probably a year! and I am very inspired by your sketching technique and style. I'm very pleased you took this initiative to make us understand basics, it'll definitely help many more like me who are looking to go in automotive design industry. Also please make video on which universities in Europe and UK are best to study automotive design and why and how do companies sponsor students' thesis and process of taking in interns in most renowned companies. That'll be of great help Sir! 🙏

I can not make a list for universities because maybe I`m not updated but quickly first ones come to my mind: Pforzheim, Royal Collage, Art Center, UMEA, SPD, IED, IAAD. There are many more check them! I can make a video about this study process yes it`s a good idea, thanks!

    Hello Berk. I thank all your tutorials, videos and the gentle way you show with others your knowledge and experience through car design. This question is not specifically about proportions, but given the examples of the video, I wonder maybe you can answer it: At least from my point of view, there is a current trend of cars with a more static stance, or at least the way the hood of some various new models is fairly plain (from the side view at least, I mean horizontal). Comparing to some examples of 90's and 2000's, do you think this trend is just that, or it is related with safety, aerodynamics or engine mounting, or maybe some other things?. Of course, I'm not refering to all cars, (let's say supercars for instance) but SUVs, sedans, and even mini-cars (for instance, compare first Smart generation with the latest, or first Peugeot 208 gen. and the current model ). If not static, what I mean is that the 90's/2000's (from my point of view) was more like join the hood line with the windscreen line from a side view point, meanwhile some new models appear to go against that, breaking this continuity, making hood-area and cabin area like two separate areas (just not like a minivan). Well, thank you very much for your answer. Best wishes.

      @BerkKaplanDesigner  Před 4 lety

      Thank you Bernardo I'm glad you like my stuff! I can say that technical things affected for sure; safety and efficiency regulations make cars bigger than before. As a solution of that we see higher hood levels and that pushes the design in different direction. I think there are still dynamic cars but volumes are different.. there are many technical reason going behind the scene :)

      @@BerkKaplanDesigner Thank you very much for your answer! Yes you're right, as you say, they are still dynamic but in a different way :)

    is this design language true even for performance cars such as F1s, hyper and sportcars?
    Also are these purely for aesthetics or are there actually mechanical reasoning that gives us these proportions and designs?
    I can only think of the lights being placed as such so that the front keeps that angle of attack profile low and it does not completely blind the drivers in front of you.
    Same goes for the back where it is easier for the driver behind you to see you.

    • @BerkKaplanDesigner
      @BerkKaplanDesigner  Před 4 lety

      Its mostly that accurate for c segment european hatchbacks. For sportscars of suvs etc it is different.
      It is not purely aesthetics, mostly safety and ergonomy regulations combined with technical layout of the car.
      As you said for examples on the lights, there are safety rules for protecting the driver, other drivers and pedestrians.
      In this video I wanted to show how to analyse a segment of cars so people who wants to draw/design cars can use the method to find right proportions..
      Thank you for your comment! 🤓🤙

    The most common question that poped up in my mind was: "WHY?". It is a way to sketch, sure, but why those proportions are what they are? Why do you do it this way, not the other? You can follow this lesson, you will draw a car with rather nice proportion for this type of car, but you will not be any wiser, in my opinion.
