Sarracenia leucophylla at Splinter Hill Bog Preserve (Alabama)

In May 2011 we visit the Splinter Hill Bog Preserve in Alabama (USA) and stay for some days at the Nature Conservancy's Research house in the midst of the strictly protected and fenced area. Guided by Brian Barnes (ICPS Director of Conservation), we learn about the importance of prescribed fire for the rare plants and are able to film some of the last remaining larger remnants of Sarracenia leucophylla. Fascinated by a wonderful and rich nature we find even more species of Sarracenia, Drosera and also some beautiful orchids. Im Mai 2011 besuchen wir das Splinter Hill Moor in Alabama (USA) und wohnen für einige Tage in der Forschungsstation der Nature Conservancy, inmitten des streng geschützten und eingezäunten Geländes. Geführt von Brian Barnes (ICPS Director of Conservation) erfahren wir, wie wichtig kontrollierte Feuer für die seltenen Pflanzen dort sind und können einige der letzten größeren Vorkommen von Sarracenia leucophylla filmen. Fasziniert von einer herrlichen und reichhaltigen Natur finden wir auch noch andere Sarraceniaarten, Sonnentau und einige Orchideen. Keith Tassin, Director of Terrestrial Conservation with The Nature Conservancy in Alabama posted to the ICPS-forum. I think the case is clear now, but anyway thank you for reporting your observation chuckcharybak.
Logging and prescribed burning you mentioned has been done by the Nature Conservancy and the (still dormant on your visit) plants will thrive again healthy in summer. The complete discussion can be found at the ICPS forum (link is below video description!).
Thats a beautifull area! A pitty so few of these habitats are left intact today!

Solche Naturdokumente reizen mich immer wieder und lassen hoffen, das solche Orte auch erhalten bleiben.

2 Anmerkungen noch:
1. Bei den Aufnahmen auf Mitbringsel, wie z.B. das Stativ achten 7:03 (das sollte nicht in den Film rein, außer es soll bewust die Ausrüstung zeigen)
2. Und das ist mir wirklich aufgestoßen: 13:34 /*No Comment...*/

The hybrids we showed are all natural and have not been introduced artificially.
Ein wirklich tolles Video, vielen Dank!
Mir ist jedoch ein kleiner Fehler aufgefallen, über den sich der Übersetzer jedoch bestimmt im klaren war. Bei 5:40 wird ein "Quadratyard" mit Quadratmeter übersetzt was natürlich nicht ganz richtig ist und die ohnehin erstaunlich hohe Diversität sogar noch steigen lässt.
Ich freue mich auf kommende Videos!

We found several natural hybrids in the field, they are common. I don't understand what you mean with introduced hybrids?
Hi, I went to Splinter Hill Bog yesterday. And I have to say it was awesome. But I'm curious about the little tubby pitchers. Are they S.purpurea subsp. venosa or S. Rosea? and I also couldn't find S. Flava. Do they grow there?
Would it be possible to provide photos of that impact? I just posted your report for confirmation to the ICPS forum and will keep you informed.
So I guess my question is... Were any of the sarracenia species introduced? Is it naturally a very biodiverse area for CPs?
luckely Sarracenia's could start new growth from the roots.

So did they introduce hybrids? Or just a bunch of pure species that weren't necessarily native?
Just because the plant doesn't dwelt upon the surface doesn't mean that it no longer roam among the surfaces creatures.
I did not make any panoramic photos--was not in the mood of evidence collection. But I can confirm that the forest as it is filmed in your video does not exist any more, it is just bare field. The difference is striking. Google map (current image) may serve as an indirect proof of what I say. My Garmin FR track (total 7.5 km round trip from east parking) corresponds to the posted map of the preserve.
There are photos posted from a month ago to the Splinter Hill Bog page on Google Maps that show lots of pitcher plants there…
