2020 Honda Monkey: 1st 80 mile impressions from a new Monkey owner!!

  • Warning: This is not a "product review" on the Honda Monkey, there's plenty of those already on CZcams, or a video on fishing, which is what I normally do. I actually had so much fun today riding around on the New Honda Monkey that I felt a first impression of this incredible little machine was needed, just in case there was someone out there who may be beating themselves up over rather or not to buy one. So, don't expect to learn anything other than my personal opinion and feelings toward my purchase. Just a guy, a Monkey, some cruising, some talking....you be the judge if the Monkey is for you.

I bought my 2020 Honda Monkey in June of 2020, since then I have only ridden my Harley a few times. It is so much easier to get the monkey out of the garage and go. It is an amazing little machine, the attention to detail, fit and finish, are top notch and it really is more fun than a barrel of monkeys. The more miles you get on it you will notice it is a little bit smoother, shifts a little better and it will even be a little bit faster. Your videos are great, so much fun to watch.

Hey There!! I agree completely, it’s amazing how much easier it is to get around on, or do “anything on”. I absolutely love getting on it and just “going” with no particular destination. I put another 85 miles on it Sunday. The 600 mile oil change is gonna get here quickly.lol. I’m glad to hear the “shifting issue” clears up, it did it quite a few times on Sunday. It’s a beautiful little machine and I’m definitely glad I did it. Thank you for the info and commenting, thank you too for watching and I’m humbled by your liking of the channel. It truly means a lot!!!🤠

One of the best decisions I have ever made was buy my 2021 red Monkey. I've been on motorcycles for 43 years. My first was a Z50 Monkey. I absolutely love mine. Every time I ride it or even look at it I feel like I'm on a modern classic collector piece. It's easily one of my favorite toys of all time. It's my little buddy for sure. =)

Hey there, I couldn’t agree with you more. I’ve been on two wheels since I was 4 years old, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Honda, Harley, Triumph…
There just comes a time when you just wanna “enjoy” the ride and want something that makes you want to ride it.
I walked past my Harley in the garage many times but this Monkey screams “Let’s go for a ride”… and I answer “Hek Yeah!” Every chance I get… 😂
      Glad you’re enjoying yours too!!

had mine for a year now "yellow" and I can't imagine my life without her, what it has over bigger bikes she can go anywhere any weird little road you see you just have to explore, shortcuts around town, parking, turn on a dime, lift her over fallen trees, turn her around in a tight ally, and when you bought her she is cheap to run hardly use gas at all, and the seat is better than most bikes I have tried :) but if you are a shy person it might be hard for you since people always want to ask you questions and some smile, point or even laugh :D and since it is easy to forget it is so tiny when you ride it can be a factor for some, but not me :D

Hey I understand completely. I grew up on every kind of mini-bike and go cart made, never thought I’d be buzzing down the road on a Monkey but when they came out in 2019, I knew eventually I’d have to get one.
I’m not a shy person, if someone wants to talk about it, I’ll be more than happy. Hek, I’ve already done it several times.
It’s a great feeling going down the road, it rides nice, handles great, goes anywhere, good gas mileage, and best yet, ITS FUN, just like it should be. It makes you wanna ride it.
So I couldn’t agree with you more. Lol

It's because of my lung and I never smoke. But my adult daughter fears for an accident, but has not to feel so. As you see I am well trained and routined.

Me at 59 soon to be 60 in Jan. of next year and want to get a bike for the first time am torn between getting this Honda Monkey 125 or the Honda CT125 !!! Oh I want them both but my wallet and piggy bank won't allow it and don't have to worry about no significant other !!!! I do wish Honda would have put the semi-automatic clutch on this Monkey for I hear it came with it on the original Monkey back when they first came out in the late 60's I think for that would have made it a true retro bike flashback but I still might bight the bullet and get the 2022 model in the Banana Yellow color scheme just will have to learn how to ride it around in the small trailer park where I live b4 getting a license for the road here in south Virginia !!

    • @TheGraytOutdoors

Hey there Neighbor!! My older brother had a red/white Monkey when I was a kid so it just stuck in my head. I knew I wanted one from the first second I realized they were making them.
I had a couple of the CT70s also but since the Monkey wasn’t legal for the road back then and the CT70 was I just HAD to go with the Monkey. Plus there’s so many aftermarket parts and accessories for the Monkey…..long story short, the Monkey was definitely the better choice for me personally.
But you have to do what’s right for you. Which one is gonna suit “your” needs. I was watching tons of CZcams videos on the monkey every chance I got.
Have you watched the two guys do the “BAJA 1000” on two Monkeys? That was my favorite, it sold me 😂.
At least they’ve added a 5 gear for 2022. Back in the day, they were only 3 speeds.
They’re easy to ride, just take your time, shift smoothly and always be paying attention to your surroundings. On a motorcycle you have to see things before they happen and always assume no one is looking at you because just when you get to comfortable, that’s when something can happen. You always have to be on your toes.
Well my friend from South Va. thank you for watching and commenting and good luck on your decision. Let me know what you go with and I truly hope you have fun with which ever one you pick! 🏍💨🐵

Cumberland river isn't that far away as well as laurel lake, martins fork lake and the big reservoirs down in tn. The bike should be here late sept or so. I agree pretty much, I don't live in a "peaceful" community like yourself, so people in big loud trucks have already messed with me. Even though my community is 55mph, 45 or 30 in town, so I guess I'll see but, my confidence is struggling due to the low power. I'm only on 27 miles so after I can get it up past 40 beyond the 300 mile break in I'll see and keep practicing. This is my first bike. Mine is doing the first gear thing too, I'm wondering if it's the N indicator? I can feel when it is and when it's not but, hopefully this improves. Not knowing what gear your in isn't going to work. So, mine better stop doing it. Thanks for this. I think people should talk about it's limits, it's not for roads above 55, ride safe

    • @TheGraytOutdoors
      @TheGraytOutdoors  Před 2 lety +1

Hey there! Yes the Monkey has limitations, that’s for sure. It’s lack of power and speed makes it the kinda bike that you’ve gotta pick your routes with.
Where I live there’s mostly 45mph and under but still doesn’t make it safe by any means. I recently put out another video where about midway through, a woman almost crushes me changing lanes because she didn’t look over her shoulder🙄.
Just like any motorcycle, the rider is going to have to “see the future”. If it “looks like it can happen”, assume it will.
The first gear issue has almost totally gone away on mine but I’m just over 1000 miles. I heard others say the same. Usually, I just let out on the clutch slightly, then pull it back in, push down, and it drops right into gear.
I think for a first bike, you picked the coolest one out there. I waited t’ll it was my 15th bike lol, only because they didn’t make it until 2019 though 😂.
I’m working on putting out my 1000 mile review, probably going to be a short one though simply because of the new 2022’s being out and there already being so many on CZcams (reviews) but I’ll most likely still do it just to complete that chapter.
Good luck my friend, chose your routes wisely, keep your eyes open, be aware of your surroundings, look ahead, always assume they can’t see you, and you’ll ride a lot longer.
Keep me informed of your progress and I mean it!
Thanks for watching and commenting! Be safe out there! 🏍💨

Just the kind of riding I love to do with my monkey. Plus some forest trails etc...
More fun and excitement than bigger bikes. Sold a 750 and a 250 enduro and bought this.
I recommend for monkey owners for lowering the front fender, plus adding a mudflap there. Keeps you and the bike a lot cleaner if the road is wet and the rocks wont shower the bike.
I also have some 1/2" thick "bushings" to the rear shocks between the two washers below the rear springs to prevent the tail from bottoming out. Made those by bending some aluminum bar just around those shock low ends, no need of dissassembling the shock.
Also made a luggage rack myself of the same 4x25mm flat aluminum bar I made the front fender lowering kit.
Obviously you can buy these pretty essential upgrades too, but real easy to DIY for peanuts.
I have a Coffee thermos on the rack on all my trips. Nice to park the monkey anywhere, sip some coffee and enjoy the cenery.
    Now it is just perfect.

    • @TheGraytOutdoors
      @TheGraytOutdoors  Před 2 lety

And that’s what it’s all about. The monkey is an extremely modifiable machine that you can personalize to make it what you want or need it to be while still getting out on it and enjoying it.
Not that you can’t do that with any other bike but a Monkey has a personality that a Harley, Indian, Gulwing, even adventure bikes like KTMs, and BMWs just don’t have. The only thing to me that even comes close is the Triumph Scrambler but even they don’t have the amount of upgrades that the Monkey does…. Let’s face it, The Monkey is unique and it asks the same of its rider.
When you ride a Monkey it’s not really to say “Hey look at me” it’s about the bond between a machine and it’s owner. Because honestly the Honda Monkey has something that a lot of people on the planet don’t have, the ability to make you smile and be happy without asking for anything in return.
I think your upgrades are cool. It warms my heart to hear about people such as yourself getting out and enjoying what the Monkey is all about.
Thanks for watching and commenting my friend, it means a lot 🏍💨🐒

Yes, The Monkey is probably the most fun I’ve had on two wheels and I’ve owned quite a few.
I’m in the 160 pound range and I don’t have any real problem with the rear shocks (they’re a little bouncy and can bottom out) but I can see that if I carry a load along with me, I will have to change them out to something adjustable.
Shocks can be pricey if you want something really good but it’s well worth it in the long run.

I haven’t really gone off road with mine Simply because it hasn’t presented itself really.
I’ve never been someone who goes “in search of” or intentionally looks for the off road places. If it comes up durning a ride, I’ll do what I have to do but I really enjoy seeing the sights more than having to pay so much attention to the ground to keep from dumping the bike in a rut or slamming into a tree lol.
I’m gonna do some camping and most likely will find some trails to follow in order to get to some fishing spots. So it’ll see some off roading at some point for sure.

I'm bitin' the biscuit or whatever!? I've decided, out with the 900 Ninja and in with 125 Monkey, I'm feeling age creeping up, bike feeling heavier, joints getting stiffer biking enthusiasm waning, need an injection of fun, and I think the monkey is where it's at, been thinking about 2nd hand for some years, with world economy going to pot, if I'm ever going to have a new vehicle experience, do it now before things get worse, and also Honda Monkey is a cool vehicle to say being the only ever new vehicle that you've ever bought in your time, and also owning a Yellow vehicle has always been a bucket list goal for me, yellow was my 1st favourite colour I can remember having and I think the 2023 range is lovely, the red looks best this year but gotta go for yellow, can't wait but need to private sell currant bike before order comes in, I'll rewrite this when I get it...

I don’t believe that your decision is a bad one… Thousands of people at this point have made that same type of decision about many of the smaller mini moto bikes and seem to be enjoying them.
      Thousands can’t be wrong!!
I drove 5 hours one way, traded in my Harley on the Monkey and haven’t regretted it in the least. I was looking to get more out of the ride as well. The Monkey makes simple trips to the grocery store fun. I drive it to work on occasions and at least for that part of the day, I enjoy it😂 and the ride home of course.
The 2023 Yellow/silver combination on the Monkey is extremely nice… you get the 5spd, easy oil change, can’t go wrong in my opinion.

@@TheGraytOutdoors Ha yeah so biscuit it is, lol! Yeah I love to hear stories like this, Honda really know their market, they've always been my favourite vehicle manufacturer but they've really stepped up a notch for making such quirky little things as the Motocompo, the Gyro, Ruckus, Monkey, CT125, and now the Dax 125 not to mention the earlier counterparts which I'm not too familiar with but can imagine what a hit they were in the day!
Oh yeah I see yours is a 1st gen Monkey125, I don't think we had blue as an option for the 1st gen in the UK, I was talking to a 2nd Gen Blue owner who wishes he could get the tank from the earlier one but said he'll stick with his anyway, I'm kinda glad they've put an extra gear but don't think it'll give a higher top speed just bring the revs down a bit when cruising, I did actually weigh up which would be cheaper to do an oil chance on and I think it will be the one with the filter, but have heard you can sometimes reuse the case gasket on the earlier ones which would make that cheaper probs?, I guess the more regular you service, the less particles can build in the spinner, also a magnetic drainplug helps, Oh yeah the thing I like the sound of on your engine is that it's lower compression so it's less strain on the engine internals I guess, so for longevity I reckon your model should be leading up until whenever gasoline stops flowing and we are all slaves to the energy board instead?
Take care, I'll keep you posted, I think wait time for one seems about 4 months, but my paperwork says estimate wait says early next month, so maybe the backlog is getting squashed..
Ps, I'm not really a fisherman but my mate is fishing mad, I used to say to him decades ago, "carrying that massive barrow full of gear looks like such a pain and the reason why I could never do that" he used to say "well it's about being prepared for any eventuality and such and such" (he was overnighting in his bivvy though) ....and I went with him a few years ago to do some photography as we'd both got into learning manual camera settings etc and he was fishing from a small rucksack, and I said "see, that's what I was on about years ago, fishing light seems like much more enjoyable and less hassle, and the ability to go wherever you think you'll get the bite!" he agreed he loves the extra freedom, but still loves overnighting, I like your idea of taking a backpack on your bike and going fishing with just that! :-)
ooh one more thing, how's the stock springs, you still have them?

@@CrustyBiker Man, I recently bought a Royal Enfield Himalayan. I wanted something that could do a little higher speeds. Our speed limits here are more like “suggestions” then laws and a little Honda Monkey that can barely run 55miles per hour can become a lot like a squirrel 🐿️ trying to cross a highway.
So I bought the Royal Enfield for longer, speedier trips. However, when I want to take a ride, I still gravitate towards the Monkey. The Enfield is fun but there’s just something that can’t be explained about the mini moto-bikes.. The only other one I’d consider would be the Dax. Like the Monkey, it’s looks will take you back in time. I “almost” wish I would’ve bought the Dax instead of the Royal Enfield but then I would’ve been in the same position..
The only thing I wish I had done differently was bought my Monkey when they came out in 2019 lol.
I’ll just have to live with an oil change that’s a bit of a pain😞you won’t have that problem 😃.
I not sure but I may actually be the “Only” CZcamsr that’s designed their Monkey for fishing🤔😃. You might enjoy fishing once you have your Monkey because sometimes it’s not about what you catch but how you got there!! 😂
I have the stock rear shocks on my Monkey but that is going to change. The stock suspension is extremely bouncy and will bottom out easily. I’m only 170lbs but with the fishing equipment added on, I definitely need to change them. So it will happen this summer.
It was extremely good talking to you and good luck with the purchase of your Monkey!! Please let me know when it comes in!!

Really considering getting a monkey! Especially considering I live in a small beach town so driving my truck everywhere can be inconvenient! What's the difference between the 2020 model vs the 2021?

    • @TheGraytOutdoors
      @TheGraytOutdoors  Před 3 lety +1

Hey there! Glad to hear about the consideration of a Monkey. Depending on what you use it for, just buzzing around town, going to pick up some dinner, exploring a little, they are pretty convenient for those things. Set up correctly, you can do some camping and fishing. Definitely a great machine on windy roads 45mph and under.
I honestly don’t believe there’s a difference between 20/21. I believe the 22’s might have. I see things on CZcams about the 22’s but at this point I haven’t watched any simply because I’ve been busy adding a few things to my 20 and making it “my Monkey”. I tend to be a focused person and what’s “coming up” or “what behind” I’m oblivious to just because mine is so new to me.
Right now, the major issue is just finding one. My local dealer couldn’t even get one unless I ordered it and then it would have been a month or more before I would’ve seen it and I hadn’t seen one “at all” at that point, I wasn’t even sure I’d like it.
I ended up 4 hours from home to get mine. Timbrook Honda in Winchester, Va. because they had 3. One was already spoken for, one was a new 2021 with ABS ($200 more) and the other a 2020 (mine) without ABS.
So, to answer your question, honestly, I don’t believe there is a difference between the two years but I didn’t ask or look to see, I bought what I wanted, no ABS, because I’ve never owned a bike of any kind with it, I can handle it.
I do know this, there’s maintenance that has to be done and it can get pricey if you can’t do it yourself but if you don’t put a lot of miles on it, those issues won’t come too quickly. If you have a local place that can handle it and moneys not an issue it’s convenient to not have to do it yourself but bike shops are extremely backed up this time of year and it could be a bit before you see it. If you’re an impatient individual, like myself, you don’t wanna wait 3 weeks for an oil change. 😂. There’s a lot to consider but personally, I feel it was worth it in the end. I’m having an absolute blast on the little thing. I hope you will too if you make the “yes” decision.
Let me know how it goes! Good luck!! Thanks for watching and commenting, it means a lot!!🏍💨🐒
