You missed the transition effect used in last season. The one where he is with drug dealer in middle of street then to his room.

Nice! Agree with you 100%. Sherlock is creative storytelling at its finest. How to tell a story we already know? How to engage audience in more than a mystery? How to engage audience into telling the story of solving a mystery.

Hey Ukii, May I know how did they edit the food plate sequence #4:09. Is it time lapse effect? But I am confused as the camera seems to be moving/sliding and how did they achieved the effects. Thankyou
@@rhamo100 i think it's more like an execution of a fast forward on a jump cuts edited footage
and the camera movement on the original footage probably sliding very slow that is why it does't feel that rough even after the jump cuts applied
result in a "violence" shot with a smooth camera movement
@@kannana5991 lot of edit, lot of watching.. by watching i mean every element in the footage that you are going to edit , The setting, The characters, their emotion, their eye, their movement.. if you want a book i recommend cutting rhythms by Karen Pearlman
This was extremely informative , as a teen who just loves binge watching shows , I never thought about the importance of transitions or other effects , it really changes my perspective and well , nothing can make me feel disappointed about Sherlock , it is the still one of the best TV series I've ever seen
Thus is why Sherlock Holmes makes the perfect Dr Strange

I'm starting to learn a lot about editing and all of this, and Sherlock has been one of my favorite shows for a couple of years now and I've always loved the way they enhance the storytelling using what the audience sees (transitions, text messages, camera movement, visual effects...), and this video does a great job breaking down all of that. I think another reason why I like watching it is because we CAN see Sherlock's thoughts it makes us feel as if we have deduced the same things as him and so we enjoy him explaining it to the other characters and what he has made of 'our' deductions

the editing and sound effects is very well put. i didn't even notice that I'm about to finish another episode. that's how much I'm drawn to each episodes. besides the story, it really is the editing and all that makes it so much better and immersive

I agree! sherlock is my absolute favorite show, and the transitions are truly amazing. My favorite is probably when he ducks down and it transitions to the car with the driver.

Hey hi . U WILL NOT BELIEVE ME ! This lockdown made to watch many web series .. So came across Sherlock . At first I thought of the same thing as u did . The length of the episode. Eventhough I gave a try. And by the end I was more attracted to THE TRANSITIONS !! konradnoises not OP, but it showed up in my recommendations. I tend to watch the likes of EFAP, Nerdwriter, LFTS, etc. I also watch video essays about games sometimes, apart from a lot of tech and gaming content. I don't know if this helps, but I already typed it so...

This was awesome! I think you really hit it on the head with the entire series being filtered through John Watson's point of view as a storyteller. I think this will be further explored in the final series, whenever that happens!
Awesomeeeeee, I always wondered Why I use to watch those Sherlock Holmes episode with such an attention even if they were so long. My mind loved those episodes. Now you just revealed those information. Once you learn something new, you automatically keep using that knowledge. Now I going to watch my favorite movies once again but now with lot of attention. To findout why I like them the most.

I have adored this show since I was very little. I recently finally got to go to London and visit the museum at 221b Baker Street and do all the touristy stuff. I am now a film major nearly a decade older than when I first found this amazing show. Stumbling across this random video when looking for transition ideas for a short film I was thinking about writing. These two parts of my life in context with each other made me fall in love with this show all over again. I know this is an older vid, but thank you for this!

Your analysis of the transitions and their purpose, the meaning behind them, and what message the director is trying to convey is very astute. Thank you so much for sharing this.
I loved this video! 👏 It must have taken a long time to make. I like how you go into great detail about each transition. It's very helpful, as a beginner editor & filmmaker. I do agree that they over did some of the effects, which made them less effective. Sometimes they'd flash by so fast, my brain didn't have enough time to soak in what just happened.

That was a very interesting video. Thank you!! That's one of the strenght of this serie. Now it's not gonna change my point of view on season 4, but honestly, they make a very great effort in the graphics and images, and I love that. Very satisfying.

The bed transition was actually done practically to my surprise. In the behind the scenes they showed this bed that is on a pneumatic system to push it up to vertical for that scene. Clever.

So I watched this video a few years ago after I first watched the whole of the series, I then just now watched the whole series again and appreciated the transitions so much more and all in all I really enjoyed watching it again which was really down to this video. So thank you!

This is awesome! And seeing the clips now bring feelings from watching the episodes. So dense production on many levels. TV is not stupid anymore. Anyway, in some comment you asked how this video was found. This has never happened before, but the two videos I've now watched in my current CZcams watching session, both were something I haven't watched recently or won't usually search for. The first one was about making a robot to shoot you in the eye with laser. The common thing was "I don't usually do this kind of..." and that, after you said it in the end, felt quite bizarre and special! I just found these videos, not by searching anything, they were suggested. Thank you for magnificent breakdown! Great stuff.

Thank you. I really enjoyed this. It was fun to think about the transitions in isolation. Of course, I've experienced them many times over, been guided by them, had my emotions stirred by them but I've never looked at them as a "thing". I will pay closer attention the next time I go though the series again.

Even a lay man like myself who knows nothing about transitioning and the skills required was completely smitten with it! Mu favourite transition is in S2 E1, when sherlock is seemingly thrown into bed directly from the crime scene. The bed moving upwards was just marvellous.
I should like to say, BBC sherlock is the best series ever produced till date :)

Man it's such a blessing that you exist! I'm very into all the various methods of visual storytelling, film, design etc. and often my fascination with such details and craft seems misplaced as if I start rambling about it... well you know for sure what I mean :) I've been wanting to start writing or talking somewhere about it, because I couldn't find too many of these things well made and because it's good to channel the nerd I guess. But it's amazing and inspiring to see someone else with a broad view on visual communication and beyond visual, thanks for the effort you put into this!

Kannan A on CZcams it would be every frame a painting, nerdwriter and a few more; but mostly observe and notice what you like, understand what makes it so through analysis or emulation and mostly - practice, practice, practice. Really no other way than to see for yourself and get feedback of others. To most it should be seamless when they watch - in most cases if they can notice the transition then it’s not good.
I’ve spent countless hours editing commercials for advertising working quite simple transistions to near perfection; then I’d move on to more experimental and sometimes not seamless stuff. I’d recommend first practicing simple, getting confident with those.
