Wow, what a great video! Thank you, Lisa. I will share this will all of my students, youngsters and adults alike! The biggest drawback to teaching online is that the students' instruments go out of tune between sessions. Teaching tuning is not easy, and we usually wait to teach it until the students have some experience with the instrument. I would like to add a couple ideas; Lisa says to tune in order from highest to lowest, but I think the A string in the most nerve-wracking to tune. So, I get that one approximately close, but wait to do the fine adjustments until all the strings are close to their respective pitches. That's another good rule of thumb; check to see how far they are all out first -- if you find that one string is WAY out of tune but the others are relatively close, then tune the one that is way out of tune first. Often, one string that has gone wacky can make the others go out, and tuning the one wacky one puts the others back in balance (in tune) to the point that you will only need to use the fine tuners. Happy tuning!
My Cello is a very well built 5 String Acoustic-Electric Cello made by Yinfente. It has a High E String (same as the Violin but an Octave lower) which moves the higher notes to an easier position, & because it's thinner it also gives the higher notes more clarity. I had to replace the friction pegs on my Cello (and fine tuners too) with geared tuners because Geared tuners make tuning alot more beginner friendly. The Wood Violins Cobra Fretted Cello (up to 6 Strings) has geared tuners which makes tuning alot easier, and the frets make it easier to find where the notes are (especailly with the models that have up to 6 Strings very well suited to advanced players). It uses a strap which keeps the instrument in playing position, meaning no pain, no worries.
I installed a set of Helicore Medium Tension Cello Strings (5 String Set with the High E) because the stranded steel core helps them hold tune better. They're also easier to bow cause they're a little bit thinner.
Oh God thank you sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much Mrs, Morris !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, I love this video and I learned a loooooooot, i am really excited, thank you again Mrs. Morris
Lisa Morris My Cello is tuned up a Half Step so that I can play w/ Marching Bands, why can't all your students have their instruments tuned up a Half Step so they could play along w/ Wood Wind players? Wouldn't tuning up a half step require really thin strings designed for that tuning or something?
crabmar if you turn the pegs back and forth every day with low tension on the strings you will get used to it faster. And the strings don’t break as easily as they seem -especially if they are not older than 2 years. Remember, just millimeters. You can do this!
Thank you Lisa - saved me a lot of time. Very clear and thorough. Your voice level drops rather after a while. Is there anything you can do about that?
RedKnight it you already know how to use the pegs and fine tuners you need to find a video with just the tuning notes on it or use a app on your phone. Yes his video is for young students and their parents.
RedKnight my tuner app is called Tuner Lite. You can fast forward to the part where I teach how to use the electronic tuning app. Here is a link to just the notes. czcams.com/video/ZpN6l0SuNeI/video.html

Great video, thank you so much. My son plays guitar and figured he knows how to tune anything leaving Dad to figure out how to fix it.

Thank you...I am terrified that the string may break & hit me. I hope one day I can tune my own cello and do not hv to rely on my teacher.

I tried to tune my cello, first A string popped 213hz and second one popped at 200hz, Jargar blue medium, any idea what ma I doing wrong?
If you guys got the "learn 4 chords and learn 100 songs ad" it's BS

What app are you using for the tuner
Do you have any other cello videos?
I will, stay tuned.
Sorry I missed your comment. Yes, there will be more.
Would have been far more helpful if you played the open strings slowly and one at a time for those that just need to hear the open notes.
There are lots of videos like that. This is for my students and parents to get the mechanics and the feel of moving the pitch up and down.
I bought a cello from china...it has only one fine tuner...so how can tune 4 strings by one fine tuner.

I also play cello I’m here to tune my A but I can’t tell if it’s out of tune
RedKnight have you ever tunes your own cello before?
Lisa Morris yes in class but we always had a noise from the speaker to help

Especially at the beginning of the video it was not easy to see the peg box with the bass in the background.
