Roban EC130 Build Part 5 - Fitting scale details & first full flight.

  • In part 5 of the Roban EC130 Build series, we finally get to see how this large scale RC helicopter flies, and get to experience just how well (or poorly) a fenestron tail rotor works.
    This is the best part of every new RC helicopter build in my opinion. It combines fear, fun and a great sense of accomplishment into one single event. It can also end in disaster, but that possibility has been greatly minimized by the progressive baby steps taken in this build thus far. A good deal of confidence in the helicopter, components, build & setup has therefor already been established.
    It is however this first proper maiden flight of every heli I have ever built, that I remember the most; it's just one big reason why I and so many others love this hobby so much. The last 2 months all coalesce into this single flight. I also haven't been this excited about a fresh RC heli build since I flew my first turbine powered RC helicopter back in 2009. This one as well is introducing an unknown element I have no prior experience with - the fenestron tail rotor.
    Before flying the Roban EC130 however, there are both internal and external scale details that have to be installed along with the ESC cooling fan, and lastly rechecking the center of gravity.

    Beautiful helicopter and a very well made video. Really nice to see a model helicopter fly in a scale manner. As impressive as it is, to watch someone fly acrobatic/3D, however, I get a head ache from watching that stuff. Scale like flying, on the other hand, is simply wonderful to watch. Thank you, John. Hopefully you will have many future hours flying the Roban. Steve in Surrey BC.

    Hi John. Quick question. What’s the difference between the Demon 3axis Gyro and the FlyWing H1 Gyro? I currently have the Roban EC 135, and was looking into some good gyros. Thanks

    • @Rchelicopterfun
      @Rchelicopterfun  Před rokem +1

      The H1 is a GPS autopilot system; ie. zero skill needed to fly and could not be used (successfully anyway) on a big scale bird due to lack of tunability. See my review on it: czcams.com/video/taNEI680-68/video.html
      The Bavarian Demon 3X on the other hand is a meat & potatoes flybarless system. No gimmicks, just lots of tuneability with rock solid performance and reliability.
      My page on best flybarless system may also be of interest: www.rchelicopterfun.com/best-flybarless-system.html
      The best flybarless gyro system for your EC135 is likely one/s you have used in the past successfully with your other large collective pitch helicopters so you are intimately familiar with their function, feel & setup.

    @rhipp100 Před rokem

    Looks fantastic John enjoyed the series. Have you ever had a scale bird and used two 3S batteries Vs a 6S due to space limitations your thought on that negative and positive please?

    • @Rchelicopterfun
      @Rchelicopterfun  Před rokem

      Hi Ron, Nope, never had any 6S heli (scale or otherwise) that I've used 2x3S in series over a single 6S. I've only used single 6S packs in those instances and on those helicopters. Downsides to running two packs over a single include more connectors & generally longer power harnesses which can introduce voltage drops and higher ripple. Two packs in series are also generally going to be heavier than a single pack (of the same capacity). Lastly, it's generally more costly getting say two 3S 5000 mAh packs over a single 6S 5000 mAh pack. Of course if running two 3S packs over a single 6S because of space restrictions or correct weight distribution is required, it's a compromise that must be made.

    Hi John, before I buy that kind of heli is there any issues about the tail rotor? Because I heard some of the owner of roban here in AU had some issues about the feneston rotor. Thanks for your reply

    • @Rchelicopterfun
      @Rchelicopterfun  Před rokem

      @nelsonaguilar8074 - As I said in this video and in the part 6 video, the Roban Fenestron works superb, provided you pair it with a good/strong tail servo and you also understand no large & heavy scale helicopter is going to have the same kind of tail authority & performance a smaller agile 3D machine will have. I have over 40 flights on this thing now - no issues & a joy to fly.

    Really nice machine. I think it looks too clean though, especially that turbine exhaust. Have a look at how the wargaming guys do weathering.

    • @Rchelicopterfun
      @Rchelicopterfun  Před 5 měsíci

      You do realize weathering is one of the last items on the to-do list with a complex scale heli build; and is not something anyone would even think about during the very first full test flight. Regardless, weathering was done last winter after about 25 fights once I knew everything was working correctly.

    • @anusblaster8671
      @anusblaster8671 Před 5 měsíci

      Fair enough, not trying to insult your work, just pointing out something a lot of RC people don't think of. @@Rchelicopterfun

    • @Rchelicopterfun
      @Rchelicopterfun  Před 5 měsíci

      That is likely because RC aircraft are working models, not static, and thus the primary importance for RC aviators is how well they fly, are maintained, and look in the sky from dozens to hundreds of feet away. Counting rivets is usually the last thing on an RC aviators mind but on a scale project like this, most of us will add some detail, but again, it's not rivet level as it doesn't have to be. Efforts are much better spent performing proper mechanical maintenance which on a model like this, just like full size, is ongoing - that's half the fun of the hobby.
      Moreover, on a full size commercial civilian aircraft like the Papillon helicopters tour company livery here, their full size fleet are always immaculate for their clients, being detailed weekly and have very little visible weathering to speak of over an above the normal heat oxidation on the stainless exhaust and some slight carbon exhaust downwash build up on the top of the boom heat shield. Easily emulated within 30 seconds and airbrush in hand 😉

    • @anusblaster8671
      @anusblaster8671 Před 5 měsíci

      Yeah, your last sentence was my point. Huge visual improvement for very little effort. I do get what you mean about the mechanical stuff, used to fly myself, its been a few years, but got a really good deal on a Trex 450... @@Rchelicopterfun
