Nobody whose mom is Sonya would want school made lunch!! My baby is now in his first year of college and my husband is retired so I'm no longer packing lunches but my husband usually packed the lunches so I was lucky. I usually do a grocery run on Sunday. I then often prepare enough salad and soup for the week and do my first 3 days of cooking

My most favorite person on CZcams! I wait for all of your new videos! You are absolutely wonderful, my dear, and I love your little family. l'm 76 years old and always learn something new from you. I did not know that I was Jewish until my mother passed away - she was afraid to tell anyone until just before her death - which is so very sad!! We came from Munich, Germany and I know that during the war my father (non-Jewish) saved my mother and family from the train (during WWII) because he was a Sargent in the regular German army and he paid to get the family (my mother, siblings, Grandmother and Aunt) off of the train and told them to run into the woods and hide and keep going south. Anyway, I was born In a little village called Schliersee - 30 minutes south of Munich near the Austrian border. I know this is a long story, but I just wanted you to know how thankful I am to you for showing and teaching me (as well as others) all of these Jewish recipes. I truly enjoy making these dishes and try to learn more about my heritage - and you help with that, my dear! I just wish that my mother would have told us sooner because I always felt that I was Jewish and always drawn to the Jewish culture - guess it was my heritage! Thank you, sweet Sonja - you have become like my family!! You are a real sweetheart and I love your little family and adore your wonderful husband!

I cut apples in half, carve out just the middle & the stem, then put the halves back together & wrap the apple up tightly in a plastic bag. - If you push down on the stem of a bell pepper with both thumbs, then cut it in half, you can just shake off the stem & the remaining seeds. - I hope this works for you, too! 😊

You are right. Apples and berries do not do well if they are cut in advance. We do melons and grapes (find that they last longer in glass containers) We also cut carrots and cucumbers (and my kids LOVE RADISHES.........which is a veggie that 90 year olds, from the "old coutnry" enjoy. Boiling eggs on Sunday is a must as well. Also packing the home made granola bars so that they are ready for the week is a great help

I love berries. They would always spoil before I could use them all. I learned to let them soak in a vinegar and water solution and then dry them well. They then can be re-packaged and put in the fridge. The vinegar kills off the bacteria and molds that cause the rapid deterioration.

Vinegar water solution is great; even saw The Doctors & Dr Oz in YT clips saying how well it works. I once kept fresh parsley for 6 weeks! And it’s the only way to prep wash fruits before storing, plain water just encourages rot. Encourages eating fresh fruit & veg too when it’s all ready to eat.

Great video! I love to prep food for the week. It’s just my husband and I now that my boys are grown and gone, but I still meal plan for the whole month, shop once a month (with a quick 2 week fresh food restock halfway through the month) and I also have a cleaning schedule. So for the meal prep, I brown and season hamburger and just have it in the fridge for quick tacos. I also put a bag of chicken thighs in the crock pot, season and when done that also goes in the fridge for quick chicken meals like tacos, BBQ chicken, stir fry or chicken salad. I also make hard boiled eggs and precut veggies. I usually make a simple mixed berry salad with whatever berries are on sale. We haven’t had any problems with mushy berries, I don’t do anything special, lol! I make my husband 5 single containers with basic lettuce salads every week, with lettuce, olives, green onions but the cut up tomatoes go in their own container so they don’t get icky. My husband pulls one of the containers out, adds meat, dressing, cheese and avocado and it’s his favorite lunch when I’m at work. I also will make 2 casseroles when I cook, one to eat that night and I freeze the other for later. It’s amazing how just a little effort to prep like this saves me stress and money in the long run. Take care!

I am the same way! Even though my four children are grown and gone and my husband has passed and it is just myself, old habits die hard! I still wash and prep all my produce at one time, so it is ready to go when I need it. I will still get a family pack of ground beef or chicken when It goes on sale. I will brown the whole package at one time and divide it up into zippy freezer bags and only have to deal with the grease once. Since the meat is already browned, it doesn't even have to be thawed out before using it, by the time the rest of the dish i am using it in is ready, it is thawed out and hot.
I also will make up a family pack of ground meat into meat loaves/balls. I wrap the meat loaves up in foil, and flash freeze the balls, then pop in a big zippy freezer bag.
I do the same with chicken, as cooked and shredded/chopped chicken is a base for so many meals. I put it into the pressure cooker or InstaPot, until it is falling off the bones. I let it cool and then debone and chop. The broth chill, skim the fat, and freeze in repurposed plastic jars and ice cube trays. I then pop the cubes out and store in a zippy freezer bag. Rarely have to buy chicken broth and can use couple of the cubes anytime in making other dishes to give extra flavor and nutrition.

When my four (now grown) children were growing up, I always kept a supply of boiled eggs and washed and prepped fruit available like you do. But I would also prep veggies like broccoli, califlower florets, baby carrots, celery sticks, and cucumber and tomato slices. I also made sure I had plenty of homemade dressing/dip as well. They could help themselves and often I would put a bowl of raw veggies and a bowl of dip on the table while I was finishing up supper, and the bowl would be empty before suppertime! I found that a child will readily eat a certain raw veggie that if served cooked, wouldn't touch.
When they were teenagers, I kept a pull out clear bin stocked with everything they would use to make sandwich on a shelf in the fridge, including condiments and washed and prepped veggies, as well as fillings. (I kept the bread/wraps on top of the fridge.)
That way they could pull out the bin, take it to the table, make their sandwiches, put everything back into the bin, then slide it back on the shelf.
It was easy to keep stocked, saved a lot of time and mess, and best of all they could help themselves! Each child liked different stuff on their sandwich, so it was a sanity saver when they would be coming and going at different times.
The clear bin wasn't wide, but it was deep and they were inexpensive.

I take care of my Mom, who still lives independently and works from home. But she's in her early seventies and she needs a little extra help with things. I discovered this when she started working from home because of the coronavirus. My brother and I were doing all the shopping to keep her out of stores, and I started asking if she wanted help with things. At first I thought I would do housework and fix things, but it turns out she likes doing that herself. She actually wanted help with meals. I think she is a little tired of cooking since she has cooked for her five children for five decades now. So I talk to her about what meals she wants and then do inventory and make a meal plan. On Sunday I shop and bring the groceries to her place. Then I spend a few hours preparing vegetables and salads and entrees. I'll cook four or five pieces of fish and a few pieces of meat like brisket or beef shoulder that she can reheat. I buy a case of matzo crackers at a time and make sure she has a selection of cheeses. In summer, she doesn't eat a lot starches, but in winter she likes to have hot food like soups and pasta and mashed potatoes. Usually I try to leave her about 10-12 meals and/or options she can mix and match for what she feels like eating. I think my tip would be preparing herbs and dressings. I leave her with four or five bowls of prepared herbs that she can add to her meals. Parsley, dill, mint, and savory herbs. I also leave her a few different containers of dressings, including some of your recipes. The herbs and dressings really elevate the meals, and she is quite creative with them. It's sort of amazing that if she has a lettuce in the fridge, she doesn't want to do anything with it, but she will happily make herself a nice salad if there are washed lettuce leaves, tomatoes, cucumbers, herbs, and dressing. It's just amazing how much food you can make on a Sunday afternoon.

We are just two but I buy large packages of ground beef at Costco and brown it all, half with chopped peppers and onions, half with just beef. I buy a large bag of onions, cut a third of them into half inch squares, a third of them into slices and freeze them on trays and then transfer them to ziploc bags. The final third I keep whole. I buy a big bag of tri-color peppers and cut them, half in strips and half in small pieces, and freeze as above. I use a lot of tiny, chopped vegetables in soups, etc. so I do onions, celery and carrots in the food processor until they look like rice, then freeze as above. I also do broccoli, cauliflower, carrot and onion all processed finely and frozen as above. I buy pork, chicken breasts or thighs and put them whole or cut up in a Ziploc with seasonings and veggies and freeze the whole bag. I make and cook meatballs and freeze them. (Usually one or two of these projects per weekend) Then, when it's time to make dinner I just throw whatever ingredients I need together quickly and then into the oven or slow cooker. 15 minutes tops to get the meal going and set the table. Then I relax until its done. I love having things done ahead of time so I don't have to stress when it's dinnertime.

I never do prep because I'm just lazy, so that's why I like watching you do it. About the only fruits I get are the ones you mentioned that don't do well with advance prep- berries and apples, since I'm allergic to melons. One thing that I do if your kids eat oatmeal, I get fresh blueberries when they're on sale and freeze them on a cookie sheet so they stay separate and them put them in a freezer bag. Put them in the oatmeal before you cook it and the cooked blueberries pop in your mouth and are so yummy.

    Hi
I also try to prep as much on Sunday for the week by sautaing a pot of onions in advance, since many of our traditional bucharian dishes require it as a base. I also try to do my stir my vegis ready for the week by getting that done especially if we are having chineese food on one of the weekdays. As far as the menu, I also dread of the thought of thinking about what to cook during the week and I found a way to even get my kids in the menu planning by using an old game board to put all of our helathy as well as favorite dishes on it and every Sunday after breakfast my kids take turns in rolling the dice and writing down 7 breakfast, 7 dinner ideas for the week and even the weather and i have a display of our menu of one of sry erase self adhesive post its so there are no fights. LOL we even added the weather and the parsha for the weekly menu as well. If your kids are too little to write then have them roll the dice .They will have a lot of fun doing it.

Ok. I don't have any tips on fruit, but I have a question about hard boiled eggs. In the Bible there is a verse that talks about not eating/drinking blood; Deuteronomy 12:23. And, I've seen how each egg is to be inspected well, to make sure there are no specs of blood in them. I'm not Jewish, but I think this is an awesome rule. Thank you G-d. But, how does one check the eggs that are hard boiled once the whites turn opaque?

Sonya knows her own child. She is a nurse and would NEVER do anything to disadvantage her own kid. She is with him all the time, so knows if he is right handed. Kids his age (BH have six of my own) do not yet know with which hand they are dominant. Parents just help their kids, as that is what a parent is supposed to do.

    • @NanaPapa123

@@alizafuchs4867 Yes, that is what a parent is supposed to do. She is a lovely individual. Due to schedules and life, her many kiddos are left in the care of others. Makes perfect sense. A tired mother can only see so much at the end of the day. Also, making a point to reference what hand is favored demonstrates preference by the family and shares this with the viewers. Understandable, as the world is made easier for right-handed people for sure. Sonya is delightful and we all love her. Hope that this is the take away message here.

I'm left handed, so was my dad and older sister. Mom said that when my sister showed she was a lefty mom tried to "help" her be a righty but Debbie wouldn't switch lol. When I came and favored my left mom said she didn't bother to correct me. My younger 2 sisters were right handed. It is hard to be left. Everything is geared for right-handed people. The knives are sharpened for righties, scissors ✂️ and machines. All for right-handed people. But we adapt. I was a hair dresser for many years, all the scissors were sharpened wrong for me. After many yrs, I finally found a scissors sharpened for lefties. And I found i couldn't use it lol I was so used to cutting with a right-handed shears (I had adapted) that I couldn't use a left-handed one. Thankfully I could return it. Yes life can be hard for a lefty, but we learn how to make things work. Now with moms 7 grandchildren, non are lefties lol weird how that works! Love your head coverings. Wish I could find something like that for myself!!
