The Last of Us is finally here! HBO’s adaptation of the perfect naughty Dog game enhances the story of the original video game by adding easter eggs to the original and The Last of Us 2. But it also expands on the lore by fleshing out Joel and Ellie for a new medium. In this video we break down all of the hidden easter eggs and references and explain what it all means.

    #TheLastOfUs #EasterEggs #Breakdown
I’m going to break down the episode, and the similarities to the game. But don;t worry if you haven’t played the game, I’m not going to spoil anything for you, except for this: Joel and Ellie are the core of this series, and become important to one another.
So here we go. First let’s talk about what this show means, and what it is trying to say. One thing that makes the Last of Us stand out from other zombie stories is that the zombie virus serves as the theme that drives the entire show. The Last of Us is about people losing their humanity and letting their primal, violent urges take over their minds.
We see this in 3 forms. One, with Joel. he loses his daughter Sarah and becomes a hard man, who doesn’t think twice about pointing a gun at a kid. The zombie outbreak cost him his humanity. Second, we see this theme expressed in the environment itself. Twenty years after the outbreak, the civilization that humanity has built has been overrun by nature. In the show and in the game, we constantly see where the growth of nature has destroyed the works of humanity.
And obviously, we see nature conquering humanity with the zombie virus itself. It's important that the cordyceps virus is naturally occurring. The fungus wasn’t made in a lab, or form an alien-it is a mutated being from earth that threatens both human civilization, and the human soul.
And this process is expressed brilliantly in the opening scene, in this talk show from1968. I love all the little details here, the giant ABC network camera, the ugly brown ashtrays-the fact everyone is smoking. If the people here look familiar, the scientist Dr Newman is played by John Hannah, who played Holden Radcliff on Agents of shield. And the talk show host is John Brenner, AKA big head from silicon valley. [big head drinking].
I love this opening for a few different reasons. One, it calmly explains how this new zombie virus works [clip, alter our minds]. And it tells us that the fungus will be relentless [needs to eat]. While also letting us know that it will behave a bit like the undead zombies we know any love [preventing decomposition].
But also, they slyly blame humanity for the rise of the fungus, by blaming climate change [if the earth gets a bit warmer]. And this is when they stop framing shots like this is a talk show, and film it cinematically. Dr. Newman is framed with a tight close up as he pretends the doom of humanity [clip, no cures]. And that line, no cures, is meant to implant a kind of false despair. Because Ellie is immune, and she could represent a potential cure.
And the ending line [what happens, we love]. Is just perfect. It elegantly expresses the entire theme of the show. Not just that humanity loses-but that Joel loses his humanity.
So this show was created by Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin. Neil Druckman is the genius who created the Last of Us series at Naughty Dog. And many of us know Craig Mazin from his brilliant work writing Scary Movie 3 and 4. [clip].
Doug: Person? He also created HBO’s Chernobyl, a devastating and intricate look into another disaster of mankind’s undoing.
I know buddy, I’m just kidding. We all gotta start somewhere. [high five]
The opening credits of the show are very similar to the opening of the game, except higher budget and in color. They depict the cordyceps fungi spreading outward, growing a city-like structure to symbolize how nature is overpowering humans. This spreading symbolizes how the fungus spreads across the world, and into our brains. And then the last two fungal growths are in the shape of Joel and Ellie.

For all the TLOU players, I noticed a couple easter eggs / references to the game.
    1. After Joel and Tess break into the locked building, they both take off their backpack and kneel down to get their flashlights, just like they way characters in the game would interact with their inventory.
    2. Near the end of the episode when the FEDRA officer discover Joel Tess and Ellie, the audio cue of getting caught out of stealth from the video game plays in the episode.
    3. In the beginning part of the episode, when Tommy Joel and Sarah are in the car driving in the town, there is a truck that nearly hits them from the left, but it stops and honks before it hits them. I think that was another one of those "we're like the game, but we're being different" references too.

I'm sure the writers took the cordyceps spores (aerial contamination) and the need for gas masks/hazmat suits into consideration. It's difficult for the audience viewing the show to see the characters emoting behind a gas mask, and so the writing conceit of having to ingest or otherwise make physical contact with the cordyceps (a bite) was implemented instead.
Treating the cordyceps as a true biohazard threat with full decon/hazmat measures a la deadly radiation or anthrax would've been too restrictive for the show's storytelling.

Anyone else notice that neither Joel, Sarah, or Tommy had flour that day? No Pancake Mix, No Biscuits, No Cake.
In the game, there is a news paper in the bathroom that indicates that the infection started with contaminated grain. This is not outright mentioned in the show (yet), but they make quite a point about the three of them not having pancakes, not trying the neighbor's biscuits, and Joel forgetting the cake.
I think it's safe to assume that it was tainted flour that started this.

      @Frostwolf_103 Před rokem

They had pancakes for like two weeks and I think that Joel forced to follow the diet since something freak him out but can't show it on pilot episode?
I think Joel and Tommy knows more than they let on, but for what? The fact that there is epidemic going on and they follow the news from CDA or WHO? Then there's a good chance they caught on the news that food stores must be recalled from contaminated products like you mentioned. So there's good chance that the origin of infection didn't start in South America like Brasil, but in Asia by country Indonesia?
Indonesia as you must know, they are in the top 5 with flour goods importer and coffee beans producer. This country also have the right conditions for fungus to evolve naturally in year 2003 which have reported one of the hottest days ever recorded. The most likely fungus that infect people by ingestion is Ergot that spreads in the air via spores. Now that's actually odd because the showrunners suggested no spores. However that's okay, with evolving with fungus you can probably spread to insects like usually and infects the crops on both rye and coffee beans.
In the game, it is mentioned South America, Central America and Mexico. But it started on isolated locations in Indonesia and spread via cargo ships towards half of western hemisphere, take two weeks to deliver and build up the boiling cauldron until finally erupt with Outbreak Day.

@@carloida000 games having ambient sounds is a standard and nothing new but you rarely see it in movies and shows this way. Usually background noises are designed to not detract from the focus of what’s on screen but in this first episode you’ll get entire conversations between characters that aren’t on screen and it never switches to their perspective so you never get the full context. Again it gives the show this uneasy feeling that something is always happening even when we’re not necessarily seeing it.

I can tell this show is going to be a hit because of how much attention to detail the team has. Especially reading all of the Easter eggs in this comment thread, it’s like every little thing and sound is meant to connect with someone.
For me the part I appreciated was the daughters agonal breathing, it was happening off screen and it’s a detail shows almost always miss when showing people dying because it’s hard to get actors to mimic such an unnatural sound.
It added to the scene as well because the brother being a combat vet wouldn’t just stand there if someone was shot, but he saw her and heard her agonal breathing and knew she was dead.
I feel like if this was the Disney or amazon shows that have come out lately they would’ve missed that detail and we’d all be wondering: “why didn’t Tommy do anything? He had the knowledge to help and didn’t, I hate that guy” lol
      Details matter.

This show will only survive if they drastically change the storyline. I loved the game, but if they kill off Joel in this series, its dead and will not work. This is the warming to the writers, remove Joel and the show dies, its great but its NOT a video game. I'm NOT playing as Elle or Tommy, I'm watching a story that I cannot interact with. Joel is essential to the survival of this show. One of Joel or his original daughter must survive, since his original daughter was killed the ONLY character left is Joel. EVERYONE else is secondary and the show dies with Joel. I hope they listen to me.

The guy running the radio is NEITHER Perry NOR Jeffrey Pierce, the guy who played Tommy in the games.
Joel had his finger in the safe position (extended flat against the side of the gun, not on the trigger) when he was aiming it at Ellie. He was just warning her to stay back. He DEF would not have shot this unarmed child. He threw her when she charged him but that is only because he didn't realize that she was a child. This is apparent by the look on his face when he looks at her when she's knocked down to the ground.

My favorite line was when Joel and Ellie are first introduced in the hallway and it's mentioned of what things Joel is capable of and Ellie quietly says, "What IS he capable of?" with a very concerned look on her face. The fungus may have been spread through the flour. I noticed in episode one that the old lady was eating biscuits, and at every opportunity for Sarah, her father, and Tommy to eat flour, they either didn’t or couldn’t. For example, Tommy wanted waffles but ate chicken; Sarah and her father passed on the biscuits; Sarah passed on the raisin cookies, and Sarah’s father forgot the birthday cake.

For the writer, to be able to make some small changes must have felt amazing as he could see what worked from the game and take 10 years of experience to improve. This is the right way to update a loved story unlike say, adding cheesy CGI all over the original Star Wars trilogy (Talking to you here George!). Never played the game but I did enjoy this opening episode. The only thing, (in a post apocalyptic horror TV series based on the end of civilisation caused by fungi), that I found unbelievable was that the soldier, outside of a protected area, at risk of attack but not at being seen by your normal passer-by, stood facing a wall to take a leak with his back turned to the shadowed wilderness. Not sure my hand would leave my gun for any longer than it'd take to unzip and extract. Since being attacked is a far greater risk then being seen by someone I feel the soldier would hang free, facing the breeze rather than aiming at brick.
Other than that . . .was great!

      A) Straying too far from the plot of the game would be absolutely detrimental to the overall quality and opinion of the show and
      B) This story already has a beginning and an end. To me, the fact that the road markers are preset and known to a large portion of the audience beforehand is reassuring. The pressure from long-time fans will keep the writers in check, I think

Losing a child is extremely traumatizing (I’ve lost one). Different people handle it differently. He has probably experienced a great deal more over the 20 years since and it’s hardened him. He’s desensitized to it as evidenced by his burning of the child. He’s shut down as a coping mechanism. 2003 joel would have equated that child to Sarah, but 2023 joel has shut it all out. It makes sense then that he wouldn’t care about the soldiers eother.
However, it bleeds through in his dreams. PTSD includes night terrors. Joel hasn’t really faced or dealt with his loss so it seeps into his where it can simmering just below the surface. It isn’t until he’s put in almost the exact same situation that started his trauma does he react. I would imagine this journey will force him to confront his grief.

In case it wasn't clear, the significance of the world becoming "slightly warmer" was that it provided a selection pressure that enabled the evolution of a species of Cordycep with more heat tolerance, which in turn enabled the Cordyceps to colonize hot human tissues -- it's not just that it enabled the mushroom to spread from the tropics to higher latitudes.
In reality, basidiomycete fungi (which include the mushroom-producing fungi) don't like to colonize substrates that are as hot as human body temperature. And that's a good feckin' thing, too. Hibernating bats in caves can be susceptible to fungus infection, because their body temps come down low enough.

High River was Smallville in Superman III (and in Fargo, Tin Star, etc etc etc).
By the way Fort McLeod is pronounced Mc-Loud not Mc-Leyod. ;)

Anyone else catch the mistake they made in the beginning of the episode? The outbreak takes place on Friday (we know this from Tommy's phone call to Joel) but earlier in the day Sarah's teacher told the class that homework was due tomorrow (Saturday) and not on Monday.

Tbf sometimes teachers would say that on accident and someone yelled out “tomorrow is Saturday”😂 Probably just a mistake on their part tho lol

Another Easter egg was when Joel was getting his hidden tools out of his floorboard and the camera lingered on the dust in the air that had been disturbed. Reminding us of the spores from the game. Awesome!

For those of you that have read "Earth Abides", there is a Collie that attempts to alert Ish about the unusual occurrences at his local power plant when he inspects it after the pandemic ravages humanity.
Mercy also appears to be a Border Collie, and was one of the first beings to attempt to alert Sarah about the pecularities of Cordyceps as it hits the Adlers' mother.

My personal favourite detail was Ellie having the last word when her and Joel are first alone together in Joel's place.
She says "you're watch is broken" lol

That intro was a perfect introduction to the fungus, and they're not blaming humanity, it's just if the Earth gets warmer which happens naturally in the Earth's cycles, were just caught in the trap this time. Brilliant
