What to look for in sustainable and ethical beauty brands?
I want to first say there is no one brand or product is perfect. The trick is to find those brands that really go the distance to make the world a better place.
Factors to consider when purchasing sustainable products:
- Cruelty Free
- Vegan
- Thoughtful packaging like refillable options, compostable packaging, use of post consumer recycled materials and packaging that is widely recycled (glass, aluminum) or recycle programs like Teracycle.
- Ethical Ingredient sourcing: It means that a lot of care and thought has gone into thinking beyond the ingredients themselves but who was involved in obtaining them and were they treated fairly.
- Waste and resource management like renewable energy like solar, zero waste policies,carbon offsets,office recycling programs
- Charitable Giving is important as well. It can help offset what they are producing for a great cause. I love supporting certified B Corps, 1% For The Planet members, or seeing commitments to give 1% of their earnings to charity.
I truly believe that we vote each day for the kind of world that we want to live in tomorrow. Our buying habits are the best weapon in the fight for the sustainability of our planet.
