Hey! As someone who loves the bees, is a beekeeper and vegan, etc, I want to clarify for all the other vegans out there to please, please use bee products, and make sure to purchase them from local beekeeping communities! Remember when all the bees were dying? 90% of the conservation efforts to save them were from beekeepers and other specialists in diseases such as Colony Collapse Disorder. If the honey, beeswax, and bee pollen industry weren't well supported we would very well be facing a mass extinction of the honey bee right now (to highlight the severity, 80-90% of the honey bee population in central Maryland died during 2017-2018). Bee products are overproduced within the colony, and beekeepers are constantly finding new ways to sustainably retrieve this excess, or else it goes to waste. Contrary to popular belief in the vegan community, this does not harm the bees at all (many keepers no longer use smokers, or are converting to better resources like Flow Hives). Honey is also more sustainable than a lot of other natural sweeteners, such as agave and maple syrup. Purchasing locally supports your local bee colonies, and is the sole reason our bee population is healthy and alive today! So please check out your local communities and do some research on your own to see, even if you don't want to use bee products, if there are ways to support your local bees :)

Claps!! Thank you for explaining this. I’ve talked to local beekeepers in my area and totally agree with this. Support local beekeepers! Bee products that you know are made sustainably and made locally are totally okay from my point of view (also vegan). Some people get pissy about that but as for as I’m concerned its completely acceptable to me.

@@af598 Lol yup! Most beekeepers I know are also actually vegan or vegetarian as well! The community is built on eco sustainability and conservation as well as protecting the bees that keep our planet turning. I got into beekeeping as a result of wanting to do more for the bee population

@@ceebee1461 Thank you for the reply! It can definitely be a controversial topic (understandable, but also usually due to misinformation). Beekeeping isn't particularly mainstream, so it's unfortunate that not a lot of other vegans are aware of how beneficial promoting and protecting the bee community is!

i think should clarify here, there is a difference between getting pimples and having acne. acne is hormonal, and deals with excess sebum production consistently clogging the pores. a lot of the time acne can be to do with the microflora you have & won't be fixed by washing your face with water. things that may work for whiteheads might not necessarily work for acne & i think there's a lot of misconceptions confusing acne with just regular breakouts.

Could you please expand? I feel like I've been left with partial information about acne and an afterthought about it not being the same as a pimple or breakout, without explanation of pimples or breakouts. Is a pimple or breakout not also hormonal and related to sebum?

    • @elleb2412
      @elleb2412 Pƙed 4 lety +9

Indigo Sky There are different types of acne. It’s not just hormonal like the person above said. You can have excess sebum induced acne, bacterial, hormonal, build up of skin cells causing acne, ingrown hairs that causes acne. The definition on acne is “the occurrence of inflamed or or infected sebaceous in the skin”. So you definitely need to know what’s causing your acne in order to treat it :)

    • @alc9633
      @alc9633 Pƙed 4 lety

@@indigosky1002 Acne is more severe than pimples and can be more difficult to treat. Someone can have pimples/ a breakout without having acne. However, you cannot have acne without having breakouts/pimples.

@@alc9633 My confusion was with you indicating that acne is hormonal, it seemed to indicate that breakouts/pimples are not. I don't have acne, I get breakouts at a specific point in my cycle, so clearly breakouts/pimples are/can also be hormonal.

I've been seriously frustrated with my skin lately because it feels like it's been months of hormonal breakouts that I just can't fully shake , I never had them as a teenager (just the usual slightly oilier skin as hormones went into overdrive) but now as a mother with a toddler in my late 20s it feels like all hell has broken loose. Sedona is so sweet and I know she's sharing what works for her, but without nit-picking, a couple of things are important to point out here:
    1) Your cosmetics aren't absorbed through your skin into your blood and neither is your over-the-counter skincare. Very few cosmetics can actually reach your bloodstream this way. Most ingredients only reach the very top dead layer of your skin (the stratum corneum) and very little is able to get deep down into the dermis, where your blood vessels are, but even if it can, that doesn't mean the body takes it into the blood stream.* The one notable exception in over-the-counter skincare is chemical sunscreen, but most chemical filters are still technically safe for use (with the exception of oxybenzone and possible -salates). Mineral sunscreens don't enter the blood at all, so have no risk at all associated with them, but if you don't wear a sunscreen while outdoors, you develop an infinitely higher risk of acquiring cancer (and a certainty of premature ageing and sun damage). If you'd like to learn more about how cosmetics don't enter your bloodstream and don't necessarily absorb even with deep penetration, please see my reply to this comment. Otherwise, this brings me to...
    2) The importance of finishing your skincare routine with sunscreen every day, regardless of your skintone. Even if the UV rating is low or you have very dark skin, UVA rays are always present and causing mutation, damage, and premature ageing to our skin cells. It's definitely possible to get sustainable, reef-safe sunscreen. Sedona has featured one example on this channel (Meow Meow Tweet). Most eco people tend to prefer mineral sunscreens. I'm a fan, and would suggest a tinted zinc, but I avoid titanium dioxide as several skin cancer specialists identify problems with it. I also like some photostable, organic chemical filters, but these are only available outside the US. So, if you're in America, go with zinc for fair/porcelain/under make-up, and tinted zinc for everyone else + bareface.
Sustainable options are tinned sunscreens and refillable sunscreen. This is essential cancer prevention, though, so it's totally essential. If you can't find an ideal zero-waste option, bite the bullet and protect your health with the next-best-thing available. You can carbon offset an undesirable purchase if you feel super guilty, but think of sunscreen as a non-negotiable daily medication that's going to prevent you from getting basal skin cell carcinoma!
    3) Omega-3s totally are essential, and a lot of vegans and vegetarians are deficient, because it's just not present in the average English-speaking veg diet--and Sedona is correct to say that your body can't make it. This is probably the only true deficiency of the vegetarian diet. However, most omnivores are also really deficient. The average American, for example, consumes extremely little fresh fish, and the fish that is being consumed, if any, is poorly sourced from terrible farms and then processed. If you're from a fish and/or sea veg eating culture, such as Japan or maybe Norway, you probably have enough Omega-3. Why is there Omega-3 in fish? From the sea vegetables fish eat. So, technically, the best source of Omega 3 is algae and seaweed. Yes, there are other vegan forms of Omega 3, but the problem is that those a) have poor Omega ratios, so you're getting waaaaay too much Omega 6 from vegan sources, and creating an imbalance that can also transpire in the skin, and b) you're not getting adequate ratios of certain essential forms of Omega 3, which are EPA and DHA. Unfortunately, these just don't exist in large quantities in things like seeds.
The answer is, if you're vegetarian or vegan, an algae-based supplement should be at the top of your supplement list, and is possibly the one one you truly need with an otherwise balanced diet! I actually recommend this for pretty much everyone.
    4) Washing your face fairly regularly is pretty important. Surfactants cause barrier damage, but the cleansing of the skin is more important than the mild damage incurred. You can minimise this by choosing your cleanser carefully. Look for barrier-strengthening and hydrating ingredients, as well as no sulfates. CeraVe is a good example of an affordable cleanser with all these properties, but is unfortunately far from ideal as far as sustainability goes. ): Some people, like Sedona, have resilient skin that will hold up to minimal washing and not trigger congestion or bacterial infections, but never washing will cause issues in most skins and especially more sensitive, problematic skins.
Here's how to cleanse properly, as a dermatologist might recommend (although advice differs by practitioner and also by the patient):
Cleanse at least once a day if you can. Many people, especially drier skins, will be able to simply wash with water in the mornings. If you have oily skin, you may prefer to use a very mild cleanser, such as a cleansing milk, or else follow up a water rinse with a pH-balancing tone applied to a re-usable cotton pad. If you want to skip a product for sustainability's sake, oily skin can combine water with a very gentle cloth for some physical cleansing action. Don't scrub, rub, or tug at the skin, however. Just lightly wipe away any oil or product residue that does not leave the skin from rinsing alone.
For evenings, always use a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser. Coconut-based cleansers tend to work well and are natural and sustainable. Your cleanser should be slightly acidic. Choose foam, gel, or milk, depending on your skin type and preference. Work this around a damp face for 60 seconds, and rinse with room temperature water. If your skin is over-stripping, this can definitely cause issues and is probably because the cleanser is too harsh and/or non-pH balanced. (Truthfully, I probably just rinse about one day a week when I'm not leaving the house and therefore not wearing sunscreen of make-up or possibly even skincare products, but I do not consider this a skin-improving habit. Just my own.)
If you have make-up or sunscreen on (and you need to wear sunscreen any time you leave the house!), then you need to do an oil cleanse before your regular cleanse, especially if you have blemish-prone skin. Oil attracts oil, so it removes any cosmetics from your face beautifully, and you'll also see a reduction in your sebaceous filaments and blackheads with repeated use. Here, you have a few options: oil cleanser, balm cleanser, oil-based cream cleanser, or regular non-comedogenic oil.
If you choose balm cleanser, be sure to find one without microplastics. A lot of the major brands have them. Personally, I do prefer a commercial oil-based cleanser, because they rinse away, and there are excellent sustainable liquid oil cleansers on the market. But if you decide to DIY this to be zero-waste, be sure to pick your oil carefully (avoid olive oil and coconut oil, and opt for a linoleic acid-rich oil, such as sunflower seed oil or hemp seed oil). Then remove it with a damp, re-usable cloth, and follow up with a regular cleanser. Unlike a rinsable cleansing oil, this oil will remain on your skin, mingled with dirt, forming a veil, i.e. you will break out and get clogged pores if you don't wash it off afterwards. Commercial oil cleansers should also be followed by a regular cleanser, even though they wash away clean, as normal cleanser gives your skin a different sort of deep clean.

A bit more about cosmetics and the ability to enter the bloodstream:
Even something like Vitamin A--one of the most active skincare ingredients--does not enter your bloodstream if applied topically. The most common form of Vitamin A in skincare, retinol, is found in the blood for bodily use, but the enzymes for binding retinol to lipoproteins (for transport into the bloodstream) only exist in the liver and not in the skin. At least as far as we know (there's interesting studies on the kidneys, for example, but there's definitely none of these enzymes in your skin!). So, retinol won't pass into your bloodstream from your skin.
Another common form of Vitamin A, retinyl palmitate, which is the sort your skin stores and converts to and from, isn't found in the bloodstream at all and is very efficiently stored within the skin cells when topically applied, leaving no real opportunity for it to enter the blood anyway. Even prescription Vitamin A cream, Tretinoin, does not significantly enter the bloodstream, as verified by several studies, and if it does potentially get there (perhaps on account of the time taken to make several conversions as it passes through the cell walls), it would only do so in incredibly trace amounts. (However, it's important to follow medical precautions/guidelines on retinoid use anyway, especially if pregnant or trying to conceive.)
Obviously, Vitamin A is just one type of ingredient, but I wanted to illustrate the complexity of even the most highly active and 'recognisable' (to our skin/body) cosmetics. In addition, most skincare ingredients are too large to even pass through to the lowest layers of the skin/dermis, which is where the blood vessels are. Most skincare ingredients have pretty large molecules. There's also the oil/water composition of skin, pH of formulations, the presence of penetration enhancers, etc. These all contribute to how far down a product is able to go--but even if it does reach the blood vessels, it doesn't necessarily cross over into the bloodstream, as illustrated by my explanation of Vitamin A absorption.
If skincare ingredients got into your bloodstream in general, they would be deemed either too risky to sell or would be regulated as medicines (the way sunscreen is in the US and Australia, albeit not the EU or throughout Asia). Most risky ingredients, such as heavy metals, are banned from cosmetics, and EU regulations are especially stringent about what you can and can't have in cosmetics. You may wish to be careful and concerned if you purchase (obviously unsustainable) skincare from poorly regulated markets, such as China and India. And there are a few exceptions, as stated. You may also wish to avoid using things such as parabens and other potentially hormone-disrupting preservatives, just to be on the safe side, but it'd be shockingly rare to find these in a sustainable or clean skincare product!
You can feel quite certain that any sustainable skincare brand will not use ingredients that will enter your bloodstream, unless they're using (organic) chemical UV filters, but almost all sustainable brands only use ultra-benign zinc anyhow! So, the point stands. Sustainable skincare won't get into your bloodstream. A lot of it doesn't even contain preservatives at all (but be careful if a brand uses no form of any type of preservative, as you don't want a cream to form microbial activity and becoming unsafe for use. I would not buy preservative-less skincare from Etsy or anyone manufacturing at home, as this is not a sufficiently sterile environment to create this complex type of product)

Hey love! I pretty much went through the same thing and I think it's interesting that many women our age/generation seem to be going through this similar pattern; no acne during teenage years (but taking birth control) and then at one point in our 20s we get off the pill and along with a bunch of other circumstances in our personal lives, we start having adult acne. Seriously I wish I would've found a video like this 2 years ago when my skin was at its worst but I guess we were going through the whole process simultaneously. And I came to the same conclusions as you, using water to ''wash'' my face is the best and if I end up using any products on my skin I go with something mama earth gave us, I barely ever wear make up anymore, I added lots of omegas in my plant based diet, I wash my pillowcase regularly and so on. You mentioned it at the end but also, drinking tons of water is fabulous for the skin, and one of the most important factor for me was mental health. Self love is crucial, as well as not defining beauty through the eyes of others/society. It is all WITHIN. Not gonna lie, this journey has been though at times but today I feel so grateful for it all; this experience allowed me to fully and deeply accept and love myself as I am, here and now. I really like this concept. As someone with hormonal cystic acne since about age 11 I wasted SO much money/packaging on products that did nothing for me or made my skin worse because they over-dried my skin or contained irritating fragrance, etc...Companies make sooo much money by capitalizing on our insecurities. Home remedies can also be a little risky in terms of throwing off skin pH etc... but the tips about omegas, washing pillowcases, and skipping makeup are a great place to start to see if your skin improves; if not I highly recommend seeing a dermatologist if possible! Spironolactone and finacea were the ticket for me.

I tried using shea butter as moisturiser cause I've heard so many good things about it but it gave me a MASSIVE and really painful breakout within a span of three days. So just be careful :)

I started putting collagen in my coffee which has helped. I also switched oil cleansing with avocado and olive oil (zero washing or water only doesn’t work for me) which have been the best thing ever. I also use diluted ACV as toner, sugar scrub maybe once a week (I know people say don’t use a physical exfoliant when broken out but after years I found it works best for me) and occasionally a wash off charcoal mask. And that is literally it.

These are all fantastic tips!!!! I actually did not wash my face except when makeup was on it for years and it kind of worked sometimes but once I turned 30 it stopped working for me sadly. I do use bougie skincare that I pick up from Citrine Natural Beauty now, but all of the products used now are clean living ingredients that are sustainably sourced and do not strip your skin. I also take a multi vit and skin supplement from Halo Beauty because her ingredients omit gluten, soy and sugar and are vegan and cruelty free. Plus they actually work!! Unfortunately her jars are not really sustainable I cannot recycle them but I do try reusing because they are really cute. I am still working on fixing my diet which I think has been a huge source of my acne prone skin. I grow my own aloe but never once did I consider rubbing it on my face so I am going to try that!!! If you were interested in doing a video on some of the clean beauty products out there and how sustainable they really are, the brands I use are May Lindstrom, Lehlani, Kypris and Tata Harper. All of them are made in the US, all of them are in glass reusable and recyclable packaging and can be found at Citrines website citrinenatrualskin.com. Id be curious to hear what you think! I also use Vapour stick foundation which has a fully recyclable tube also found at Citrine. Maybe they are even companies you could consider interviewing for your podcast.....?

I've had acne since pubery, and it didn't go away as an adult. Skincare is the most difficult area for me to be low waste in because of this. I have prescriptions for tretinoin, clindamyacin, birth control, and spironolactone, all of which I'm at the sustainable mercy of the pharmacy and drug companies. Because of the clindamyacin, I have to use some form of benzoyl peroxide. I occasionally use a cleanser or toner with salicylic acid as well, and I have to use certain types of moisturizers and which are very different than the thick body butter style that low waste options typically come in. If I don't uphold this rigorous routine, my skin situation becomes UNHINGED, and even with the skincare, I still get some acne. Often, low waste products are more of the "natural" ingredient and its nearly impossible to find plastic free salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, as well as the moisturizers and sunscreen types I use. Since packaging is only worth around 5% of the products overall impact, I at the very least try to find companies that are vegan/cruelty free, and have good sustainability ethics and that helps too. The next challenge is price. Oftentimes the skincare good for acne control in non plastic packaging with sustainable ethics is stupid expensive, so needless to say I compromise and my skincare is just going to have to contain plastic until further notice.
    Edit:
My acne is cystic. It's not just superficial. I know benzoyl peroxide deactivates tretimoin, that's what I use tretinoin at night and benzoyl peroxide wash in the morning. It separated them by time and the product gets rinsed away (instructed to do so by my derm)

I didn't know people actually worried about using shea butter. I used it daily and it helped clear my acne scars.

Raw Shea butter has a comedogenic rating of 0, so it will not cause acne in most people. It’s very healing to the skin, but I feel that many people are afraid to use it due to its thicker consistency.

Many people in the comment section seemed to get this wrong: She only washes her face in the evening, many people in the comment section seemed to overhear that.
In the morning just a splash of water and in the evening oil cleansing/double cleansing.
She doesn't advocate for never washing your face. 😅😅

she says she cleanses when she's worn makeup that day and at 9:25 she says she tries not to wear makeup most days so she'll go weeks sometimes w/o cleansing, even if she's sweated or gotten dirty. I don't quite agree b/c there are definitely environmental pollutants in the air (and in the dirt) that get on your face so I like cleansing every night.
she later shows a cleansing milk which is typically very gentle so it'd be good for daily use. a lot of face washes and cleansers strip way too much off so that causes more problems in my experience.

Would that tone you have work to shrink pores to prevent blackheads? I use nose strips to prevent blackhead buildup.

Here's the thing. I used to never wash my face with anything but water as well and I got the feeling that whenever I did used a cleanser my skin would appear unhappy I guess you could say. Now unfortunately that's not the case anymore but the reason I think for that is weird. My body produces too much skin. Even if well hydrated and moisturized it flakes, peels, and if I rub on my skin (I know, shameful) it pills up with dead skin. How am I supposed to get away with not washing it so often anymore? Also to clarify this is the case with any part of my body even though I wash with a wash cloth that sorta exfoliates so I'm really confused as to why I'm having this issue. Any suggestions?

Use bar soap to wash your face for eliminating plastic use. There are a lots of gentle bar soap out their.
