While the old version had me adlibbing the narration while playing the game alongside it, this new version has a scripted narration with the gameplay just serving as visuals. This game haunted me when I was younger. Much to my surprise, when I heard it was getting a 10th anniversary revisit I had to look into it. While doing so, I found this video and I can honestly say that this is probably the best video I've ever seen about this game, it's truly one of the most underrated horror games ever made and to say that you have done it justice is nothing short of an understatement. Same here, I used to be extremely awful with horror games back then so when I saw slender standing on the hill as you leave the house through the back I was already terrified and quit the game for years until I came back and finally played it and thought it was an amazing experience

    I feel like the last chapter of this game was nothing short nightmare fuel and its astounding how a game with a lower budget managed to terrify me more than any other horror title I've played through in my lifetime.

      Speaking of the last chapter, I feel like we might either get a new ending in the 10 Year Anniversary Update that explains S: Lost Chapters or the same ending that takes place in the Matheson house or maybe perhaps both endings.

    Chapter 3 is easily the most terrifying one to me. I don't know how to put it into words, but having both slender and the chaser hunting you down in a derelict mine which is very claustrophobic, comprise a truly terrifying experience

    • @Terrifyger
      @Terrifyger  Před 11 měsíci +3

      It really does! The music that plays when the Chaser is hunting you just makes it impossible for you to relax, and the fact that you can actually see her moving as she pursues you gives you a harder fight-or-flight response. And like I said in the video, when people play a Slender game, they have different expectations for the gameplay, so this kind of scenario is more powerful as a result.

      @@Terrifyger Yeah, I'd never thought of that! You're right, everyone expects to be silently chased by just the slender-man in a sprawling forest. It really is a dramatic change from what we've all been used to. To be frank, even the second chapter which is the defacto slender-man experience also feels a lot more claustrophobic than the original slender: the eight pages. And slender-man's animations really add a whole lot of terror and dread

      @Terrifyger  Před 11 měsíci +3

      @@Capy-K Given the relatively better graphics than _Slender: The Eight Pages_ and all that, I did find the second chapter to be more immersive, and therefore more creepy as well. The Arrival is what I think every Slender story should be.
    A tragedy.
    Slender is not something you can stop. No gun, no tactic, no ritual, nothing can stop him.
    While I do think not all stories with Slender have to have a bad ending, I don't think they should have a happy one.
    Slender to me, is a symbol for unstoppable evil. And that sometimes, we just can't stop evil.
    Also to answer your question at the end of the video, my fav level is Chapter 3.

    • @Terrifyger
      @Terrifyger  Před 6 měsíci +2

      That is a perfect way of putting it. A story with Slenderman as the opposing force is never one that should be a happy ending. It should be a mediocre ending at best - some good and some bad. Or all bad. Just as long as it's not all good. Slenderman does _not_ fit that kind of fairytale narrative.

    Id like to mention the fact that the growling/screech when Charlie entered in the Chapel is a reversed sentence and it gives you the following sentence: "Do as I command, kill him, do you see what he has done" and I did this with every sounds Charlie makes , I reversed the audio and make the speech higher and any it gives Always give the order to kill with a kinda demonic and distorted voice : "Kill him" or just simply : "kill", except for the growl/cry in the house at the start of the game and for some reason, its only a dark/demonic voice but its not distorted, and it says: "keep out, dont walk on the bridge, someone might get angry, there IS someone burried here he wants to see you, you are getting colder" you Can check it by yourself if you want!

    • @Terrifyger
      @Terrifyger  Před 11 měsíci +8

      I did check it out by myself, and my mind has been blown wide open... you're absolutely right. Like I said in this video, that deep, growling voice is undoubtedly the Slenderman, only he's talking to Charlie here. Saying to "kill him" is in reference to CR, and "do you see what he has done" is referring to him discovering how Slenderman came about, and he wants CR to avoid finding a way to purge him.
      But what Slenderman says in the house could be interpreted in different ways. This is my take on it.
      The way I see it, "keep out" is probably referring to the Matheson farmstead, because his next sentence is not "don't walk on the bridge", it's "don't walk on the graves", and the only level that has multiple graves, all grouped together, is the "Homestead" level.
      With "someone might get angry", he's most likely referring to himself (Slenderman, as he's the one who's speaking), because there's a hefty pause in that sentence, reading it more like "someone might get... angry", with the word "angry" being emphasized, so it could sound more like a threat for Charlie to do what he says. I doubt that Slenderman is at all concerned of anyone else getting angry.
      I could hear him saying something else before he said "There is someone buried here who wants to see you", and it sounds kinda like "no one is here alive", which could just mean that the place he's standing in - the burned-down Matheson house - has nobody living in it. The person being buried might be Charlie's dad, and Charlie's dad _did_ want to see Charlie again back when he was alive and hadn't burned himself to death.
      And "you're getting colder" is referring to how Charlie is slowly dying; his body seems to be in an active state of decay, due to being proxified by Slenderman.
      But this is just my interpretation of it. There's one more instance of Slenderman's growly reversed voice, in the final level, "The Arrival", but it's nothing new. When Lauren is making her way through the shadowy ruined hall to CR's corpse, dress shoes can be heard walking calmly and the growly voice can be heard among them. I reversed the audio there, and it's just saying the same thing: "keep out... don't walk on the graves, someone might get angry... there is someone burried here who wants to see you... you're getting colder...". So yeah... nothing new there. ^^;
      But thanks for telling me about this! I did know that the deep, growly voice belonged to the Slenderman, but I didn't think that it was actually _saying_ stuff... I thought it was just random growly noises for the purpose of sounding scary. But your find gives much better insight into it! :)

    Another detail I loved about this game is that you can see the radio tower where your journey ends from the very start. As soon as you exit the car in the first chapter, looking down the road immediately has the radio tower standing in the distance. With the exception of the flashback chapters, that tower is always visible from somewhere, getting closer and closer as you near the end.
    It's a bit similar to the citadel from Half-Life 2, in a way. As soon as you exit the train station you see this gigantic structure looming over the city. Just by looking at it, you just know that you have to venture inside it at some point.

    On Lauren at the end of the story. I think she was screwed either way.
    1: If she decided to leave and left her friend to suffer, she would get hallucinations by Slenderman like CR and Kate did as well, which would drive her crazy and commit suicide or slender sickness if she still sane.
    2: She will be killed by Slenderman or Charlie once she gets outside or still inside trying to get out when she refuses to help Kate
    3. She will either become a proxy by Slenderman with Kate and Charlie stalking in Oakland Park to those unlucky people who trespass.

    It's my favorite horror game, it bothers me that it never had a sequel because of copyright issues and was unfairly criticized at the time, it's of the games that conveyed genuine terror in me and gave me back my appreciation for the character, as for the levels, I suffered a lot with Into the Abyss, it was the level that scared me the most the first time I played it (and I ended up passing it to annoy my brother's companions in a sleepover unintentionally), besides frustrating enormously while playing it due to some unfair deaths that made me abandon the game 2 times along with its terror. Its story on the other hand is fascinating and excellent to me providing a lot of depth and menace to Slender along with the concepts already created around it. Finally I loved the video, I loved to see someone comment on the excellent use of horror in the level design, since they usually only talk about the story, a little bit of music and Homestad/Into the Abyss.

    This game honestly has some of my most favorite game environments. For one of my modules in my uni course for concept art they wanted us to take some of our favorite environments in games and analyze them. One of the games I decided to analyze for this project was slender the arrival, and the main environment in it that I analyzed was actually the starting house level.
    I loved how seemingly calm the game first starts out, like there's nothing wrong except there's hints in the first 1 minute that something is off. The opening theme that plays on the way to Kate's house is chill, but there's something off putting with the low bassy drone that plays in the background of the them.
    A tree blocking the road? That's unfortunate but that happens, but if you look to the side you will see one of the phone lines has also been knocked over.
    Bit of a fan theory here but I always looked at the knocked over tree and phone poll as deliberate acts that might have been done by slenderman himself. He torments his victims by stalking them and isolating them from the people around them, so ensuing Kate or C.R can't make a speedy getaway via car, or call for help via phone seems like a likely thing he would do. Or it could have been C.R since his plan was to kill himself and Kate and make sure no one else got dragged into this mess.
    Then the walk to the woods that slender chases us in; I love that. It's like the calm before the storm. It is dark and ominous sure, but nothing can hurt you there so it serves as a great way of making the world feel like an actual world, rather than just as small levels. Also a great way to subtly introduce slendy if you notice him in the background.

    • @Terrifyger
      @Terrifyger  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Wonderful analysis on the level! I didn't notice the fallen telephone pole, but it's a great interpretation that Slenderman did it deliberately so that no one could try calling for help. The "Prologue" level truly is the best way to introduce us to this game. Though, the photo-realistic graphics in the Unreal remake of the game will probably make that first chapter that much more powerful and immersive. X3

      That can happen in the Matheson house in the "Prologue" level, yeah. It's happened to me before. There's more than one photo that can pop up, but they're all taken at the same location and seem to be of the same three people - a little boy, and his mom and dad. I did save one screenshot of it and showed it on the Slenderman wiki, in the discussions for Charlie Matheson Jr. (the Discussions board doesn't seem to exist anymore, so I can't find the link to it). I was told that they're most likely supposed to be Charlie Matheson Jr. and his parents, Diane and Charles Matheson.
      The event can still happen in the game for me. All I have to do is linger around inside the Matheson house in the "Prologue" level, but it doesn't seem to happen that much if I walk around, and instead has a greater chance of happening if I'm standing still. The first time it happened was when I was looking at a photo in a picture frame, half-buried in the ground, trying to make sense of what was on it, and then one of those family photos appeared for a split second. Mind you, that's not the only thing I need to do in order to get the flash.

    i think the chapter that always got me good was the last chapter when you run on the burning forest
    like, the scenario itself feels like you are in a nightmare that not even your mind is being able to control, it's a complete mess that you cant just stop to try to analize the moment, all you can do is to run for your life
    and then combining this with the ending where we are basicly against a wall with zero ability to defend ourselves, just adds the final touch to a never ending nightmare
    like when you really think you are about to die but then you just wake up on your bed in a cold sweat?
    but this time, it's not a nightmare, is the ending of your story, and you cant do anything to prevent it, other than watching everything unfold right before your very eyes as the lights go out and the pale figure rapidly approaches you...

      I think that's a feature. If you aren't standing in light/don't have your flashlight on, and also aren't making noise, the Chaser will have a harder time finding you. I've been out in the large starting room with her before, and I had my light off and was sneaking around her. She walked right on by and didn't notice me until I turned on my flashlight. Guess all that time spent in the mines didn't get her eyes to adjust to pitch-blackness.

    What's the scariest level? Um... I'd have to say Memories. It's the only level where victory or escape is not in sight. As soon as you away from your toys and toward the first train set piece, you've lost. Charlie is a victim. And while neither Charlie nor the player realizes that until much later, it ultimately makes the increasing worry of Charlie's parents, and Charlie's own increasing fear hit that much harder. The Homestead and Escape missions, while scary, have the potential for victory, because you know that, in the story of the game, the characters have made it past those points.
    The Eight Pages and Into the Abyss are both quite frightening as well, but it's mainly due to the RNG aspect of them. But once you've memorized the layout of the maps and have formulated a strategy, it's just a matter of completing your objective. And that kinda takes the fear factor away in my opinion. And while I've played the game enough to not get scared on any of the levels anymore, there's still a level of dread and foreboding and mystery that adds to the experience of The Homestead, along with all the lore present, that makes that my FAVORITE level.
    But from a pure psychological standpoint, the thought of all your attempts at escape being pointless, and that you walked right into a trap simply out of an innocent childish curiosity is far scarier to me.
    And the new level in the remake seems interesting, but since I haven't played it for myself as I didn't know the remake existed (and it's not available on Switch), and the only person I've seen play it cut some footage out of the video, I can't speak much on it. But from a first glance it does seem to satiate my desire to see someone driven truly mad by Slenderman.

    • @Terrifyger
      @Terrifyger  Před 9 dny

      Interesting take! Having a level where you just feel that you're doomed right from the start does provide a more hopeless feeling, and in a Slender game, that is a good thing. I do prefer the approach of showing you hope, only to take it away from you, and the "Escape" level accomplishes that very nicely, while "Homestead" lets you get away in the end. But knowing the ultimate fate of CR, it doesn't feel too happy when he leaves the farm.
      And the new extended chapter, "Nightmare", absolutely IS the scariest level in the game to me. In my review of the Unreal update to the game (which is forthcoming), I'll detail why it's so scary to me, but if you wanna see uninterrupted gameplay of it, then you can check out my playthrough. I don't believe I've cut anything out of that, so you can get a nice seamless walkthrough of it that way, along with my paranoid and frightened responses.

      @DarthTingleBinks Před 9 dny

      @@Terrifyger I did actually play the new level. I went ahead and bought the remake on my Series S and was pleased to learn that I didn't have to play the whole game to play that level. Which is cool. And considering it's in a different menu than the other levels are, it makes me wonder if they're going to continue adding to the game in the future. Either more flashback/VHS levels would be fine, but I also wouldn't mind more Lauren levels added to the game. Maybe a level that takes place BEFORE the start of the game from Lauren's perspective? The game is at the point now where the game flows pretty well from one level to the next from start to end, but I wouldn't mind extending it, either.
      Edit: Alternatively, instead of changing the game and map to add more levels, I wouldn't mind a well made sequel. Like... WELL made.

    • @Terrifyger
      @Terrifyger  Před 9 dny

      @@DarthTingleBinks There is upcoming DLC in the works, and the DLC is supposed to add 3 new chapters that expand on the lore of the game, so I imagine they'll be in the "Extended Chapters" section of the menu, too.
      I do agree that a sequel would be awesome, but I'm not sure how they could keep the story going from where this game ends. Lauren and CR are both dead, Kate and Charlie are both proxies, and Slenderman wins. That's really about it. The sequel would have to feature entirely new characters, and personally, I don't like it when a sequel to a piece of media does that. I mean, if people play a sequel, it's because the characters from the first game returns, so if there are entirely new characters, then it feels less like a sequel and more like a separate game that follows the same format.

    • @DarthTingleBinks
      @DarthTingleBinks Před 9 dny

      @@Terrifyger It's cool that they're working on more chapters for the game. I'm definitely looking forward to those.
      As for a sequel... It would be difficult. But I can see two ways it can be done. 1. Like you said, it would focus on new characters. However, considering there is a massive forest fire that will need to be put out, and CR and Lauren, who are both dead, presumably have people who would want to know how they died. Basically just the curse of Slenderman never ending, because it just spreads from one person to the next because... People are naturally curious.
      2. Retcon the ending of the game to have Lauren alive, and Kate dead in her place. I mean, like everyone already knows, Kate's model was used in the final shot of the game. It's probably just because they didn't have a model for Lauren (and as you pointed out, the name for the model is Lauren_Dead, but I see no reason they can't retcon the body being dragged away to Kate's.
      This being said, I'm not sure how interesting a sequel in which Lauren is still alive would be. At least not as a game, anyway. I have had the idea of Lauren surviving for a movie I want to write, but considering the interactive nature of a video game, her surviving wouldn't be very interesting, unless we were, again, playing as a loved one worried about her declining mental health before eventually being pulled into the spiraling web of Slenderman's victims.
      So basically, a sequel can only play out one way, with whether or not Lauren is dead being the only difference. A prequel, however, exploring the history of the Matheson and Hayes families might be fun. But for now, I'm fine with just new chapters. If they do decide to make a new game, I think speculating on the possibilities will only create unrealistic expectations.

    • @Terrifyger
      @Terrifyger  Před 8 dny

      @@DarthTingleBinks A prequel expanding on the Mathesons would be incredible. Their part of the lore has always been the most fascinating to me, and I'd love to get a more in-depth look at it. Hopefully the upcoming DLC will include stuff like that!
      And yes, the model used for Lauren's corpse being dragged away at the end is called "laurendead", but the thing about the Unreal update, if you've noticed... they didn't reuse Kate's model. They actually gave Lauren her own model now, and she's now wearing clean jeans and different sneakers. So it can't really be retconned to have her now be alive. Unless she's now just unconscious instead and being dragged away to be held captive somewhere, but that doesn't really seem like Slenderman's style.

    I dont remember the music stopping once you enter the house

      The music, no. The outside ambiance does cut out, though - the gentle wind through the trees, the birds chirping... the only things that stick around are the occasional rustling foliage and footsteps through leaves.

    I would really love this game if it wasn't a blatant copy of the first Slender game, gameplay wise. I love the into stage, but the gameplay feels extremely repetitive afterwards. The difficulty balance is also very weak, sometimes the game is ridicolously easy, and other times I can't proceed futher no matter how hard I try. Love the lore and the atmosphere, but gameplay is a total dissapoitment.

      @Terrifyger  Před 11 měsíci

      Well, when your main source material is a game where all you do is wander in a forest and collect 8 pages while avoiding a paranormal entity, there's only so much you can do. But that _was_ a common complaint with this game back when it first came out, and by now, there's thankfully more chapters that're more lore-based. It certainly isn't the greatest horror game in the world, not by a long shot, but it's definitely the best Slender game that exists out there.

      It's been done to death when this game first came out. With her get-up, she does indeed resemble Jeff, and many people thought she _was_ Jeff at the time.

    Iirc the original version of this game had a hardcore ending where you end up getting thrown from the top of the radio tower

    • @Terrifyger
      @Terrifyger  Před 3 měsíci

      It did, but that was before it got ported to the _Steam_ store. At which point, it now has the ending where you're in the basement with Charlie and find Kate crying, no matter what difficulty you're playing on.
