  • This video shows the process i go through to clean out my Aquascape ecosystem pond. This can be applied to a DIY ecosystem pond also. There is no need to remove the fish or drain the pond and pressure wash it. This took me 15 minutes and i do it once a year, that's it.

      Thanks Sam. The aquariums really aren’t much to show. Just a 3ft tank with small tropical fish and me and the kids each have a small shrimp tank. Oh and we have a 4ft tank with the silver perch but they will eventually end up in the dream pond.

    Good to see ya again! I'm just curious- when it comes to cleaning out filters... do you think there is a 'too much too often' phase that may actually do more harm than good in relation to the healthy bacteria? Am I over cleaning I guess. I typically clean out my filters once a week as a weekend chore.. mainly bc I'm curious as to how well my basic home made system is working. Its been going for about 2 months now, and I just figured to much filtration was better than to little for the koi/goldfish.

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety +2

      I personally think if the water is moving freely through the filter there’s not really any need to clean. Of course there are so many different filters and fish loads so how frequently this needs to be done will vary. Even if the filter is flowing freely I still like to give it a service once a year. But yes I think it is possible to over-clean pond filters. 👍

    • @Ozponds

    You should show us your aquariums, also what type of vacuum do you have? I have one that i don't know if i can use it on my pond it said it is for water and air.

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety +1

      My aquariums aren’t very special I’m too lazy. It’s just really what got me into the ponds and obsessed with water quality and making things less maintenance. My vacuum is a oase pond vac. They are too expensive I wouldn’t recommend it if you just have one or two small ponds. Just a net and a siphon is all you need 👍

  • @muhammadfauzanmohdnor3826

    What's your thought about gravel vacuum? Is it fine to let the dirt under the gravel?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety +1

      My thought is that it doesn’t bother me too much. If I think about a natural body of water there is quite a thick layer of sludge down there, with different bacteria’s, organisms and oxygen levels. Of course a natural body of water usually isn’t overstocked with fish. In my aquariums i gravel vac because I know they need my intervention to sustain the fish life. In my ponds I try and keep them more sparsely populated so that it’s more hands off. I also tend to get in my ponds from time to time so I guess I am stirring up and dislodging sediments. 😂 sorry for the ramble I’m kind of thinking while I type. I guess I’m not sure on what is right or wrong, I’m just happy to remove as much as I can to prevent it getting too thick.

    Hi Kev, I've made a bio filter around 1m2 using a centipede/snorkel and I'm having problems with water coming out of the top of the snorkel. Could it be the slots in the centipede are too small (it's a 110mm pipe for the centipede)? My pond is 6600ltr and I'm using an Oase 3500 pump. Grateful for any guidance.

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety +1

      Sounds like it Ron. I’m guessing the water cannot escape out of the slots you’ve created fast enough so it’s spurting out the top. Need lots of holes to spread that water out evenly over the base of the filter. Hope that helps 👍

    from the skimmer ? to the water fall or pre filter first ? Thanks

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety +1

      It’s on the outside of the liner buried. I usually prefer to keep everything inside the liner but on this aquascape pond I followed the 20 steps. So while you dig out the pond you bury the pipe with some of the dirt.

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Před 2 lety

      Few options. Use a pond vacuum, net it out, stir up all the debris so it gets pulled into the skimmer. You could also do a drain and clean but if it’s summer where you live it’s better to wait till autumn or winter when the temps are cooler.
