  • During one of our Pond Cleaning Services, Mark recorded this video, "How to clean a pond without draining it".
    In this video, Mark, "The Pond Advisor", discusses pond vacuums. Explains the need for different attachments that minimises the risk of sucking up the rocks and gravel.
    He also explains the need for a long enough pond cleaning net to reduce the time spent netting out the pond waste. If you have a huge pond and can't reach over halfway across the pond. Nothing is better than cleaning large ponds. Then a nice pair of chest waders.
    In this video, we use a pond vacuum cleaner briefly. Drain and clean the traditional fish pond filter.
    Also, as part of this pond cleaning service call, we show you how to cut your pond plants back.

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  Před 3 lety +3

      Green water is a sign of excessive nutrients in the water column. So how to get the water clear again is the correct filtration or the correct level of plants (natural wetland filtration) marginal or rafting plants out competing the algae for food.
      If you have a fish pool then chemical filtration in the form of Ultra Violet Light (UV clarifier).

    Mark, I wonder if a TDS checker (a £10 one) would be a really good indicator on when to clean. As TDS is also raised by decomposing material, so if the pond water TDS is in your normal range then maybe it’s fine and balanced and managing just fine by itself even if a little dirty to our eyes?

      After pond cleaning the pond is normally dirtier however after 24 hours it’s the same as before without all the organic waste or better. Clear water is all about balance. If you have brown, green, or black water, you need to clean the pond a little differently for each colour. Sometimes you can’t clean, clear it with out draining the water out.

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  Před 3 lety +1

      To be clear when we drain the water is removed to get at the waste not dumping the water away to waste.

    Hi Mark, first of all, thanks for the great video! I moved to a new house that has a very large pond that is super deep, about 14 feet and has a lot of sludge due to tree branches and leaves and years without maintenance. It has a lot of tilapias and cat fish on it but I'd like to find a way to clean it and add koi, gold fish etc. Do you have any idea of how O can clean it? Thank you!!

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  Před 2 lety +2

      I would recommend an exploratory drain and clean, watch some of my pond cleaning videos. It’s like wet dredging a lake that’s full of sludge, garden ponds (with rubber liners) need more care, keep as much water as possible then remove the waste. Think about installing a proper skimmer like the one Aquascape Inc make (1000 skimmer, 8” door), these collect the leaves as they fall,

    We are in the process or finishing our small wildlife pond build which has a small pump to run a rock waterfall. Having put some plants in the pond, a lot of sediment settled on the liner. The rocks are already starting to green up. Will a fine net catch this or do I need to do something else? No wildlife in the pond yet.

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  Před 3 lety +2

      Do you have a mechanical filter? Have you seen my intake bay video, or the double pot method in one of my small wildlife pond showcases. If you don’t have a intake you become the mechanical filter (chasing waste around the pond).
      Yes we can supply you with a fine mess pan net!
      If your talking about a still water wildlife pond the look at more plants. This is better than a filter pump in the base of a pond! A safe form of mechanical and biological filter is better than a pump moving and smashing the aquatic life around.

It's very sheltered by trees and is basically about an inch of water then a foot or so of sludge, leaves, branches etc. Should I hoover this out or shovel it? What would you do with all the left over sludge? Is it good for growing crops?

    • @ThePondAdvisor

      Steve Bliss shovel it if it’s a concrete pool! If it’s a liner then drain the pond water down holding as much as possible. Hi Mark, Thanks a ton for the video. Super helpful. I recently purchased a house that came with an oval pond, roughly the diameters are 20ft and 30ft. It is 6.5 ft deep. It used to be a koi pond and has a filtration mechanism for the water - Mechanical drum filter + Bio filter + UV filter. I do not have fish in it now, and do not intend to have any. However, as we get into spring, I noticed that a lot of algae started growing all over the bottom of the pond. Although the water is clear, it still looks murky due to the algae. Due to the depth and size of the pond, it's tricky to clean it properly. They grow quicker than I could clean them. I have been using algae brush, but it seems to be inefficient. I am wondering if investing on a reasonable pond vacuum would be a better idea. Or should I just get a pond rake. Would you mind throwing in your suggestion? Thanks a ton, Abi

Last year it had a lot of frogs and I've seen some frogs on my plot again this year although not in the pond. I'd quite like the empty it out to clean it then move it and refill it, I just don't want to do that if there is frogspawn in it. I can't see any frogspawn so far, is it usually visible on the surface of the water? If you have any recommendations let me know, thank you.

      Frogs are spawning all over the country, they have been a little late this year. I would cleanout the pond in the autumn after the leaves have fallen now.

    trying to think about not changing the water,, wouldnt a bucket with a hole in the bottom, a hose pipe, some large rocks, medium rocks and a bag of sand do the job?

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes you can make a DIY filter out of all sorts, you need to be on it all the time moving the pump every hour or so. Better to look at the pond design, if it’s still then use a pan net, to remove waste in the colder months.

    What if I have sand on the bottom of my carp pond? Should I remove leaves that sink to the bottom, every week with a pond net (filtering the sand clean), or should I leave them there for a longer time?

    • @ThePondAdvisor
      @ThePondAdvisor  Před 5 lety +3

      Install a large surface skimmer, to remove the leaves before they sink. But if not remove them as soon as you can. Clean playpit sand is a ok substate for a koi pond.

      Yes you can use a paddling pool, chemical free so you will be fine clean out and old water in the pool first then drain the pond water into the paddling pool. Remember to keep the water oxygenated

    Do yourself and others a huge favor and get maybe 1000 fresh water clams. They are only as big as my thumbnail but are constantly consuming all kinds of wastes. This is their only food. They will keep your water clean and feed small fish too. I have had my 9 Gold Fish for about 3 years and I have yet to feed them anything. I have no pump or filter and no bubblier, yet they are still alive, healthy and fit. The water is clear to the bottom as long as I don't let the water Hyacinths take over. Works for me!
