Fun facts; Ritchie's mom played a cameo scene in this movie. She's sitting on the couch as the actress who played her is going around the room with the camera.
Ritchie's family was on set during the duration of filming. During the coin toss scene, Ritchie's little sister runs up to Lou Diamond Phillips crying, saying, "Why did you have to go Ritchie. Why did you have to go"?
You'll be happy to know that Bob did in fact turn his life around when he remarried. This movie helped Ritchie's family get closure. Such a great, but heartbreaking movie.

The other singer in the plane crash 😭 and it was Waylon Jennings that lost that coin toss.

Slight mistake... Tommy Alsup lost the coin toss to Ritchie. Waylon Jennings willingly gave his seat to the Bopper because he was sick. When Buddy heard, he ribbed Waylon for it, saying "Well, I hope your ol' bus freezes up." Waylon jokingly fired back, "Well, I hope your ol' plane crashes." He said those words haunted him for years afterward.

Coming from a Puerto Rican family here in the state of NY, this movie my family and I have seen a million times on tv for the last 37 years and still love it to this day. My parents grew up in the 50s and 60s and this was the type of music they used to listen to. But the real Bob's hurt and jealousy was very much accurate even though he still loved his family very much. Ritchie and Bob's mother Connie actually lived long enough to see this movie come out in 1987 before sadly passing away 3 months after it was released. Bob Morales lived until he was 81 when he also passed in 2018. Even until 2018 Bob still had a tough time talking about when his brother died in a plane crash. But his relatives to this day still talk about Ritchie all the time and reminisce about him and his family. P.S. Bob eventually turned his life around and I think he he became a drug addiction counselor or something in order to help others from going down the same path in his later years.

Buddy originally chartered the plane for his band who was backing up everyone on the tour. What the movie left out was that their drummer had suffered frostbite in his toes a couple days before from the miserable cold on the bus and had to be left at a hospital. Ritchie, Buddy, and member of the Belmonts would fill in for each other on the drums the last couple nights. As I said, Buddy had chartered the plane for his band, not the headliners. The Big Bopper had the flu and talked bassist Waylon Jennings out of his seat in exchange for using the Bopper's new sleeping bag on the bus. Ritchie had been bugging guitarist Tommy Allsup all night about getting his seat on the plane. Tommy kept turning him down. After the show, as they were loading up in the car to head to the airport, Buddy asked Tommy to go back inside and make sure they hadn't left anything. He saw Ritchie, and once again, he asked about going on the plane. Tommy said fine, we'll flip for it and pulled a 50 cent piece out of his pocket. Ritchie won. This happened in a backstage room at the Surf Ballroom.

Few ppl realize why American Pie and that plane crash was such a prominent event and later a song...
Because the entire musical, cultural and NATIONAL landscape changes when the clean-cut 'idols' of the 50s burned-out, then the Beatles arrived and with sex, drugs and Vietnam to come, those "innocent" times were gone forever.

I was a junior in high school when this came out and I went to see it in the theater with my gf. There was a group aof girls maybe a year or two younger sitting behind us. They all cheered anspd applauded when Valens won the coin toss. They didn't have a clue who he was, or even that this was a true story. And they certainly didn't know what was coming.
Wayland Jennings has told the story how before he got on the plane, Holly joked with him "hope your bus freezes up on you." and he replied "yeah, well I hope your damn old plane crashes." And that was the last the he ever said to him and how that has weighed on him the rest of his life.
The policy of waiting until the next of kin are notified is largely a result of this accident. Ritchie's mother did hear about her son's death over the radio. Buddy Holly's pregnant wife found out by seeing it announced on television. She miscarried soon after. That was when they decided to invoke the notification policy.

I remember Waylon Jennings on the episode of Behind The Music back in 1998 when VH1 did the episode on The day the music died when Buddy told him I see you are not taking the plane ride up and just play talking Buddy said well I hope your bus freezes over and Waylon said well I hope your plane crashes.

Tommy Allsup lost the coin toss. Jennings gave up his seat to the Big Bopper, because the Bopper had been sick and didn't want to be on the long cold bus ride.

I already knew Ritchie Valens died on the plane with Buddy Holly but I still teared up at the end when I saw this on cable. I loved this movie and thought Esai Morales (Bob) should have won an Oscar that year or a nomination.
Another good movie with Esai is the original "Bad Boys" with Morales and Sean Penn! I know crime fiction is not your favorite genre so I warn you it does takie place in a juvenile lock up!

The coin toss did happen but not quite how the movie depicted it. Richie approached Buddy Holly's guitarist Tommy Alsup at the Surf Ballroom about having his seat on the plane. Tommy decided to flip for it there. Clearly, the movie moved it to the airfield to be a little more dramatic.

  • @arlopear7136

41:32 the cointoss was true but it didn't happen as depicted in the movie. In reality it happened back at the concert venue in the hallway between Ritchie & Tommy. The flight was booked by Buddy Holly for him & his 2 bandmates, Tommy & Waylon Jennings (Google him if the name doesnt sound familiar). The Big Bopper got Waylon to give up the seat for him & Ritchie wanted Tommy's seat but Tommy initially said no & it wasnt until the very end of the night when Ritchie asked him one more time that Tommy agreed to a cointoss. Ritchie won & Tommy let him have his seat. So there was many times where Ritchie could have avoided that fateful flight & lived. Sad. Theres another story going around about that night from Dion, another performer on that tour thats a complete lie that he came up with fairly recently. Whereas Tommy Allsup told the same story since 1959 up until his death only a couple of years ago.

Theyre picking apricots. That whole scene in Northern California where they're picking apricots is where I was born and raised. It's Hollister CA. Not the clothing company but the town. The Director Luis Valdez is from San Juan Bautista about 7 miles outside of Hollister. Many scenes are shot all around these areas. Great movie.
