I had a new 71 Duster with 3:23 gears and a torqueflite transmission and ran 14:03 @ 101 m.p.h. on stock E70 x14 poly glass tires. Great fun in a plain Jane car.

I think both cars would've been quicker if the Duster had a Torqueflite, and the Stage 1 had steeper gearing. Much respect to the 340s, even in '71 they were still formidable, but tough to take down a Stage 1, especially a '70 Stage 1. Along with the Hemi's and the LS6, they were the pinnacle of power and performance. Another great race!

That 340 showed what they are made of, taking on a Stage 1 is tough. And what a great display of torque vs hp, in the first race you could see the Duster coming on and the higher trap speed. Like the old saying goes, “Torque makes power, and power makes speed”. Thank you as always!

I don't know why anyone would think a 340 CI would beat 355CI.
    I drove a stock, but built Buick 355, to 13.03, @ 104 mph, with
    A messed up launch.

Just FYI, the "adjusted for inflation" does not mean anything. The price of vehcles hit a much steeper curve on cost than the curve of inflation, more than once. For example, think of the average Pro football players in the '60s, who had to work odd jobs during the summer to make ends meet, then at about 1981, athlete incomes skyrocketed (more than once since then, of course)..

Care to cite a source? I doubt you'll find a credible one that agrees. I know what it takes to get 500 HP out of a Buick 455 and those engines certainly didn't have it from the factory. With the very rare dealer installed Stage 2 parts it could get there.

Not a great race. Nice to see the cars, but not sure worth the editing or channel effort. Duster has a bad launch, then missed shift, then a no show. GSX letting the auto take control and short shifting. Not up to PAR for the channel.

@@anthonynelson9136 Funny, but slopar's owned super stock, pro stock, stock, funny car, top fuel, and... back in the day. Where was Buick? Oh, but when Chrysler was forced to add weight to their pro stock's, it took around 800 pounds, GM finally won a race. Good job and thank GM and 'Da Grump' Jenkin's for crying to NHRA prez Wally Park's that it was bad for Chrysler to win all the time. Finally gave GM faithful something to brag about.
Oh and the Hemi killer Stage 1 Buick, back in the eighties, I knew a guy who owned one and constantly badgered me to part way's with my Challenger because GM's were so superior. His tune changed when a local '71 340 Duster dusted his Buick, actually bitched slapped it. The Duster had header's and 3:23 gear's.
