  • This is the first time lapse video on CZcams of the entire Hong Kong double decker tramway route. Nowhere else can you watch all of it in 8 minutes. First I hopped on a tram from Kennedy Town Terminus to Happy Valley Terminus. From there I hopped on another tram from Happy Valley Terminus to Shau Kei Wan Terminus. This has been a bucket list item for a long time, so I'm glad I finally got to do it. The footage is from November, 2015. The entire footage at real speed is 1 hour 50 minutes.
    The map in the beginning of the video is showing the wrong map for the route I take. The map is the westbound map when I am actually traveling eastbound. For the correct map, click on the link below.

    There seems to be a very well developed public transport system in Hongkong! At least 50% of the vehicles I saw in this video were busses or other trams. Very few cars, bikes, mopeds and parking spots!

    Those trams were old when I lived there 30-odd years ago in the eighties! Lot less traffic than I remember - and I can't see many maxibuses. The taxis look exactly the saem though! Used to live in Lyemun Barracxks above Shau Kei Wan - and the squealing from the trams as they drove round the turning loop used to sound all through the day and night. What with that and the aircraft taking off from Kai Tak and over Lyemun Gap, almost directly over the barracks .... it all made for a very noisy experience.

    I first rode the Hong Kong trams on Saturday,January 25,1975 when I was in the U.S.Navy on my 5th. Navy cruise which was my 1st. Westpac Cruise. I was stationed aboard the USS Blue Ridge LCC-19 which was out of San Diego at that time. The Hong Kong tramways is a great way to see the city of Hong Kong itself and is very affordable. I rode the Hong Kong tramways in late 1984 & 1986 when on Navy liberty in Hong Kong. I also rode the double decker Star ferry over to & from Kowloon. I rode to Shung Shui which was the last stop on the Kowloon-Canton Railway before crossing into Red China. I seen the boundary which is a river that divided the New Territories from Red China.

    Wow! This video is a little scary! People cross the streets in the middle of traffic, and with this fast-paced video, it looks like an accident is imminent. I realized that both trams and buses have two floors. And I imagine that this was caused by English influence, from the days when Hong Kong was a colony of the Land of the Queen. I noticed that Hong Kong is very vertical and the streets seem cramped, with bus stops located on "islands" in the middle of the asphalt. It looks quite dangerous. Of course, I know that the video is accelerated in time lapse.

      @andyowens5494 Před 6 lety +1

      Simon Kefas : It looked pretty similar 45 years ago. I lived there for a few years whilst my dad moved the Post Office from Pedder St (one of those stops) to the current building next to the Star Ferry. A few more tall buildings, and different cars. I'm not sure the tram tracks were on concrete (I may be mistaken), but the rest of the scenery was very familiar, so not a lot different. Less crowds at the stops than I remember. Hong Kong chinese dont "form an orderly queue", its first on gets a seat.

      The tram looked the same 50 years ago (1968) , less advertisement graphic on tram side, and warning sounds besides Ding Ding now with normal car alarm sound also; and a safety device beneath the train has been removed away, a few trains have interior changed and planning to install air conditioners in some.
