I’m 49. I was maybe 10 when I saw V (1985?) and I remember this scene. At 10 I maybe did not understand the complexity of those words in relation to the Holocaust but I knew something profound was being said and I remember being deeply moved by the actress and her performance - Bonnie Bartlett.

  • @pussyfunk-stopputtingthepu2652

Kenneth Johnson explains that they had to do this specific scene over and over again, because the actress playing Daniel's mother was not faking it, she was crying for real and at any take, she was never able to finish her line ... That's why the actor playing Daniel's father finishes instead; but originally, the actress was supposed to read it herself from beginning to end.
She was really moved by the content she had to read in the script, for real.

Just as Abraham had to teach Stanley the right thing to do Stanley had to do the same thing by making his wife read the letter. What is particularly moving here is Abraham's traumatic experience as a holocaust survivor. This gives him the moral authority to guide his family to do the right thing. The similarities between the nazis and the visitors are uncanny.

  • @JaimeGirl

“We have to help. Or else we haven’t learned a thing.” The old adage about those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it, delivered in a devastating way first by Abraham to his son, then by his son to his wife-a survivor of the Holocaust’s last lesson to his son, and the most important one. A lesson taught by over 6 million Jews alone, let alone all of the tens of millions that died by Nazi hands- lives that might have been spared if the world stood up to Hitler far sooner than they did. Because the other lesson to be learned here is that all that evil needs to flourish is for good people to do nothing.

*The other day, I was walking in a street of a middle-sized city of France, and I noticed on a ''V'' traced (with the general de Gaulle's cross inside the V) ... It obviously was an old house which probably used to be a small factory about to be demolished; the V seemed very authentic, traced with a white/grey-ish painting like concrete, and it was there for years and years ... I think it was really from the WWII days, since in some cities of France, on the old buildings, you can still see on the walls the ''V''s (either with or without the general de Gaulle's cross inside) that guys from the resistance used to trace on the walls ... Well, it was just another old building about to be demolished to build a new project

I was too young to understand or appreciate this scene the first time I saw it. I was only interested in the aliens, the spaceships, and the lasers, which is why I found the second miniseries more entertaining. But after watching both miniseries plus the regular show years later, I realize how good the first miniseries was and how much the quality declined afterwards. Science fiction is great for allegory, even if it isn’t subtle. This series was truly ahead of its time. I look at the world today with the rise of fascism, the distrust of science, etc. This miniseries was based on the book It Can’t Happen Here. But Trump and MAGA shows that it absolutely can.
