- Someone kicked the door in while a tenant was living in this house and left me with a broken door that wouldn't shut properly. Rather than replace it I decided to repair it with a reinforcement plate. In this video I'll show how to install a plate so the door will close properly and regain it's strength.
There are several combinations of door thickness as well as lockset setback. Make sure to measure your door carefully before buying a reinforcement plate.

You make it look so simple, Great Job!
That’s pretty nice. And out of touch might be to inject some glue into the crack where the wood is damaged and that will set up and further reinforce the door.
You saved me some money, despite me needing to get 2 other parts, very helpful
Thank you for the video! Did not know this existed, but I'm getting one on Monday.
Thank you for that! Very handy tip!!!!
You can put wood glue into the cracked wood and clamp it for a day and would strengthen it before you put the plate in .. that’s my thought anyway good job I didn’t realize you can get the plates .. thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you!
👌👌👌 i prefer and love and applause repairs than replacing
So mines cracked more then what u had but It’s too much to replace . Would bando work to fill in what broke ? Or any other alternatives
This is an obvious fix that a person with less than desirable intentions might try to compromise. I suggest since is an exterior door, doing similar to what was done temporarily with screws, but conceal the screw heads so it isn't obvious that the door has had a repair and for the inside mechanism area possibly put a recessed metal plate over the entire length of the crack (it could be a 1/16 thick piece of sheet metal or metal). Do the same on the inside of the door with the screws you did with the outside, to again conceal the weakness. Since metal and obviously a wooden core since the screws wouldn't be doing anything otherwise, then put a bondo type patch over the screws, let dry and then sand and paint. Much more secure than your fix, though does require a bit more work. Remember the area where the mechanism and door knob are are wood as well as the edge should be too.
A question: when you put two nuts on the bolts on the plate, don’t the nut and bolt need to be pressed inside the wood!!
What about the other side of the door, my hinge side is cracked the same way as you knob
My problem is, he uses a screwdriver and a hammer and pounded pounded, pounded, and the crack is on the opposite side, the door frame and I have glued it. And then when I went out of town here we broke it. I've tried everything he still gets and so I go through all the video footage hours and hours and I don't know if it's still in there. Because he had control over that 1SD hard for a moment, so. Do you have any suggestions or quick fixes? Until I can find it or get the money to my landlord.
can this be done to the deadbolt aswell?
Sure. They make single hole plates for a knob only and double hole plates for knob and deadbolt.
@@HomeSource can I use 2 separate plates instead of the one longer plate ??? Only asking cause I'm thinking my door is so unprofessionally hung that I'm guessing my lock holes for the actual lock are not the correct spacing ...... 🤷🏻♀️
@@amarie1722 if the holes were factory drilled a standard double plate should work. If someone manually drilled the deadbolt hole then all bets are off. All I can suggest is take measurements to see if there’s enough space to install 2 separate plates. Should be doable but impossible to know for sure. Good luck!
What if the lock and handle are much closer together then what your is??
It’s possible someone may have cut the deadbolt hole in the wrong location. If so that will be harder to fix. You may not find a plate to match.
@@HomeSource oh no, my door was kicked in and can't lock it now. I will just have to make sure to measure properly! Thank you for answering!
How did you remove lock ?? You placed your camera too far
There are two screws on the inside half of the lock that you unscrew.
no glue no clamps its called being a hack. half ass work is unacceptable
Where's your video?🥴🙄
