How Lowriders Were A Protest Against White Supremacy - Past Gas #72

  • On January 1, 1959, the government of California tried to kill the lowrider movement. But their efforts backfired-- instead giving rise to a golden age of cars that bounced and tilted like magic. Lowriders became a protest movement on wheels. How did conflicts between lowriders and the cops play out? How are lowriders connected to the history of Chicano culture in the US? And who are the modders and mechanics who made it all happen? On today’s Past Gas, take a little trip with James, Nolan, and Joe, as they dive into the story of lowriders.

You're entitled to your opinion on the internet. I honestly have to be that guy and my opinion is that people can enjoy their car/vehicle/mode of transport however they see fit, cars to some are a thing they use to get to a destination while to others cars are literally giving people a livelihood to continue being a human being. We all have different tastes and ideas and that's what I like about vehicles, no 2 cars are the same, fact! Down to a molecular level they are all different and I love finding out what is different about each vehicle. Same goes for the modified scene of road/race automobiles. I'm fascinated by what people like and don't like

Lowriders are my favorite car genera. I'm from Northern California, not as much lolos in LA, but still lots of lowriders. The first time I saw a vehicle hit switches, I was hooked. By the time I was 20 I owned at least 4 cars with hydraulics. I'm 30 now, building a 1964 Pontiac Grand Prix right now.

I think lowriders are SO BEAUTIFUL. I'm not huge on murals and crazy patterns, and I think 14" wire wheels are better than 13s... 13s are just slightly too small for me. I like a car that looks like a mint condition cream puff, just on wires hydraulic, frame painted to match the paint, chrome undercarriage. I like stock interiors just immaculate, maybe a 2 tone paint job but mostly just 1 color hella clean.

@@dariusgwathney5513 don't dwell on the past just move forward. One of the reason I like lowriders is that you can build one for not too much money. You can get an 80s oldsmobile cutlass for 3500ish, some wire wheels for less than a g, and hydraulics for about 2gs. Now, for around 6k, you've got a car that's going to get all kinds of attention, reliable, dependable and hitting switches with hydraulics are so much fun!

We lost Hector and I had never had felt such a horrible sense of loss and I had met his family on leave and the family virtually adopted me and I stayed with them for the funeral and I took extended leave and ended up helping his brothers finish Hectors Lincoln with suicide doors and they put this fabulous mural of my bro Hector on the hood, I cried like a baby!

Great video, guys. I really got a lot out of this one and for anyone who might be interested for some reason, here's why:
My dad was born in 1941. After the war ended, my grandparents moved the family from Detroit (where grandpa was a machinist for GM) to South El Monte, Ca in 1945, two years after the Zoot Suit Riots in L.A. In high school, dad built and drove a slammed, chopped 1955 Ford V8 pickup with side pipes, dodge Royal Lancer hub caps and sprayed root beer metallic with a cream white roof. It was built by him and his dad in their shop. He was right in the middle of the burgeoning lowrider scene. Interesting thing is that between his parent's heritage, dad was Scottish and Native American Indian. As one might imagine, almost everyone he associated with at that time were Mexican, and he always spoke highly of them even in his old age. As old school a man as dad was (I wasn't born until he was almost 50 years old) he harbored one ideal that was particularly ahead of its time- There was absolutely zero tolerance for racism around the guy, and he'd let anyone have it if they didn't mind that sensibility. My (much) older brothers have told me this went all the way back to when they were kids in the 1960's. My dad passed away last year and going through his things I found an old, framed picture of him at about 18 years old with that truck. It has become one of my favorite decorations.

I’m a big fan of you guys but the “rat fink guy”?? Ed Roth did not steal Ron’s idea. Ron and him were friends, both building awesome kustoms at the same time. Roth was inspired by a different car entirely but did use Ron’s technique to make the top because it worked so well. Ed Roth was very important to the kustom car culture please do not write him off like that again. Kustomrama is a great website that documents these Kustoms and low riders a like, wonderful reference tool if you guys need it.

I live in south texas. You don’t see them often but their is a small group here if you are in the culture you’ll know. Older men drive them and most of them gave it up in the 90’s so they don’t take their nice cars out as much as they used to. Anyways when I’m driving and hitting the switch it’s always fun to see people lookin at me like they’ve never seen such a car before! Like it’s an alien spacecraft or something. It’s awesome.
