  • Most people think about edge control as just a two dimensional concept, lifting the edges of the boat left and right, but edge control also includes bow and stern control. Quadrants are a technique game-changer that will make your edge control significantly more precise and help you better understand which edges to use and when. In this video, I'll go over the basics of edging, build into quadrants, give you real world examples, and then show you the drills to get your edge control on point.
Before you tackle your edges, I highly recommend you see the '5 Golden Rules of Kayaking' video first: • 5 Golden Rules For Kay...

As always another great instructional video Boyd, simple, easy to follow and very effective.....I already knew the theory but this really got me back thinking about it for future paddling and playing around with it more on the river...

Great content! Especially from about 6:10 to 7:45. I haven’t seen a video coaching this specific idea before.
I could watch a whole video about how to shift weight from one part of an edge to another in the flow of a rapid. If you think of the four quadrants plus the center of each edge there are six zones, making a large number of potential weight shift sequences. It would be fascinating to analyze different patterns used in different rapids or by different paddlers in the same rapid.

I've got some videos in the works that'll expand on these fundamentals, but so stoked you watched it, enjoyed it, and took something useful from it. I don't understand why it isn't taught this way more often. Thanks for watching!

    Very good teaching here. Thanks.
I see that your kayak paddle has tape where you put your hands. I've been wanting to learn what to use and how to do that. If you can do a video on that I'd be grateful.

Thanks 🙏🏻 and thanks for watching!!
The tape on my paddle is colored electrical tape for the hardware store. I wrap over once and overlap each bit starting toward the center of the shaft and working toward the blades. It creates small sticky ridges that keep my hands from sliding down the shaft even when my grip is extremely loose. The goal is to have a loose grip while paddling… instead of holding tension. 🤙🏻

For the flatwater drills in a creek boat, you’ll still go in a circle if you alternate quadrants like on lean cleans in the drill, and the boat will rock in the proper directions, but it’s not as visible. Once you apply it to river running though, it works great as seen in the river running examples. 🤙🏻

It's fun! My favorite is in a playboat with no paddle or in a half slice... great place to train, learn, build up skills
