- The London Gaming Market is a retro gaming paradise. I went with the goal of making a big dent in my Sega Mega Drive full Pal collection. I also wanted to start looking out for Sega Genesis games so that I could start the MegaGen collection. It does not start well though.

That was the very same mega drive I had as a kid. Mine had a red switch on underside, think it was for 50-60 hertz, Japanese games worked in it and PAL .

Great buys, amazing the Where is Carmen San Diego in time complete with the book. That boxed Mega CD 2 PAL region is great very cool. I think the screw is 8mm wide on the head, 5mm wide of the body and 10mm long.
It's the thread gauge I'm worried about. I've also found out that the "Where in Time " big box also came with a watch. I'm currently trying to get hold of this.

I believe the Asian PAL MD shipped with an RF box, like most of the western releases. Also it can indeed run games from any region, though there are two caveats:
1. It has a cartridge lock, so if you wanna insert a western game, you need to either a. open your machine and unscrew the assembly, or b. use pass-through adapter.
2. Obviously, it can only run PAL games without a mod. The ultimate lockout, really.
Personally prefer taking the machine apart and removing the lock. Looks much less awkward. Did that to my JP MD1 and had a hold-reset-button region mod installed. The LED isn't red anymore, but it otherwise looks factory.
Buy a bridge adaptor!
@@afriend9428 An adapter just looks awkward to me, so took it out of my JP MD. I set the lock aside, so if I were to sell it, I can put it back if desired.

Amazing pick ups dude 😊 That Izzy looks to be in very good shape 😊 I was able to pick myself a CIB copy with the multi language and Portuguese manual for 25€ on CeX 😁 lately some CeX have been putting the prices down on MD games here in Portugal 😊
I've seen MD prices falling. People still try to sell games for stupid money on eBay but they are not selling. I think people have been asking and paying stupid money and it's got to the point where it is either too expensive or people have the games.

Man am the oppsite when it come to old stickers on my games, I love the history its tell of the game. so I would of cleaned up that kart and kept the blockbuster rental stickers on there lol
Sometimes I keep them other times I don't. It depends on the condition, position, and the type of sticker.
Nice picks up, love how you do your best to restore them. Thanks for getting the Saturn controller, I have had my eye on this sadly Amazon UK haven't got it yet, I'd really like one of these to play it on my Saturn...(and maybe see how it works on my MD build) You'd need to use the dongle with the switch as it's not bluetooth only 2.4ghz. Hopefully the switch sticks won't get drift like the switch. I look forward to a more in depth review in how you find the D pad and the buttons, latency etc. :) On another note I own an Asia Region Mega Drive Mini and it's the best of the punch as it's alternative game library is awesome. Happy you got some good gear my man. I'll see you again in March if you and Sega Head come and perhaps you may want to purchase from my table. Who knows?! haha.
Yup the Saturn controller is very nice, I've not put it through it's paces yet but over the next couple of weeks I'll work it hard. Street Fighter is always a good stress test. I also want to see it pointer games work with the thumb stick as this would be closer to a mouse experience for these types of games.
I really enjoy seeing how you patch things up as best you can. I do this too, and even if we can't do a perfect job most times whatever we can do is a very nice improvement.
Forgotten Worlds is a great game. Not too hard, oozing with super cool sci-fi stuff and a lot of fun to play. I've been playing Forgotten Words recently on my Super Pocket, but unfortunately it's a real struggle because of the control layout of the Super Pocket. It will be a much better experience on the MD/Genesis.
I also love seeing Tanglewood in the background of your videos. That games deserves a lot of attention.
Tanglewood is amazing, it gets really good when the partner mechanic is introduced about half way through.

And I like having a look at the process restoring the games.
When it's just for myself, sometimes I ended up reprinting the cover art (not for stuff I'd resell ortrade).
I started grabbing some Japanese consoles and games once I felt ok with my general collection. Specially to get the oddities like the Mega Jet, the Multi-Mega, the Sega SG-1000 and SG-1000 Mark II.

I'm still after a mega jet and multi mega. But games first, maybe.
Still love that Sega Master System II console in your collection Mike. Maybe one day we can see a dedicated video of you playing on it and explaining about the SMSII on why Sega developed it in the first place. 8^)

I remember seeing hundreds of them asian Mega Drives brand new on ebay circa 2010. They were steadily depreciating in price too as stock got lower until they were just several tens of pounds for the last few, then yhe price went back up 😂

Why there are blue spine

I think you get the point and will know of many more like the couple of big box games that you did in a recent video

Awesome pickups and a great job on cleaning and restoring them. Maybe an idea to make a video displaying an entire clean and restoration process of some items, specially the old cardboard requires the most careful practices. Think it will make a good video and be helpful for the community and maybe others can share tips or idea's you might not have considered yet yourself as well.
Ya I was thinking of making a few more restoration videos detailing the process.

Mike Ditka's Football was very impressive find in that condition. I have never seen one of the Ballistic game boxes in that good of a shape. I have tried to keep my copy of Star Control from disintegrating over the years, but it was one of my favorite games, and the box shows it.
I've managed to find a few in near mint condition.
fyi Mike, the Carmen Sandiego Where in Time LE also came with a watch. Maybe there were two editions? My LE box has an additional sticker on the front advertising the EA watch that came with it.

This is the first megadrive I ever bought in around 1991. I got it from choices video library ( they were a chain in the uk at the time). I always wondered why mine had red buttons and larger 16 bit text.
I remember that the first game I got was whip rush and it was in Japanese. It played uk cartridges out of the box but I didn’t think anything of it at the time.

@@RetroGamerBoy I ahve a question for you. Can you give some advice about a Sega Genesis box I just bought? I would like to reproduce the styrofoam cover for the components. I have the styrofoam that houses the genesis, controllers, etc. Is there a way to reproduce the styrofoam cover?
@@IamMarkSmith it's just a simple square so it's not to complex. I've used very sharp craft knives in the past to form the foam but your problem will be that you need a long blade to cut the lid to the correct depth and keep a nice smooth surface.

I'm always torn on stickers. I like my games to look nice and clean, BUT, I sometimes like the idea of the history and story the stickers can tell...

I sometimes leave the stickers on. It depends on the sticker and the condition and position.
print out the box cover of an undamaged where in time is carmen sandiego and cut the piece from the printed version and glue it on top of the damage picture
That would look a bit rubbish 😅 the process is to print onto a similar paper to tracing paper. You then use a lacker over the top of the paper to attach it to the damaged cover. It's hard though and I have limited experience of it.
P.s I like to keep any rental sticker’s/ previous sale price stickers on my games. I like the history of it. I recently found a copy of Batman in a local charity shop and it was the one I used rent from a long since closed shop as a kid
I do keep some stickers on my games and boxes, but it depends on the condition. It it's rough then I'll take them off.
I remember buying my first Japanese mega drive in December 1989 £200 in Tottenham Court Road at this mad shop that every imported console of its type..plus 2 games and extra joy pad World Cup soccer and Rambo 3 £300 all in i spent my weeks wages great time

But I guess my big question is about your Asian PAL MegaDrive. You say you believe it’s region free, I’m going to assume “all PAL regions” and no NTSC. Or am I wrong? Some kind of sorcery if it could lol. And, to go with that question, what Asian regions are PAL? My understanding always was Japan was NTSC for sure and I’m think Taiwan?, Korea? Are NTSC? I’m in Nova Scotia, absolutely the other side of the globe
Yeah, it's region (well, hertz) locked and has a physical cartridge lock like JP/KR Mega Drives. So while you can undo the lock and a western-style cartridge will fit and power on, it's still gonna need a mod to play NTSC games.
From what I understand, the Asian markets were all over the place. Few countries outside Japan and Korea used NTSC (like Taiwan and the Philippines). However, just by landmass and how nebulous a region term as "Asia" was, the PAL market was way larger. Areas like Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Persian Gulf states, Indian Subcontinent, Russia/CIS, etc. were all included.
No it plays NTSC as well. It's all regions. You just need to remove the cart lock to play PAL games. Countries like Hong Kong, South Africa, South East Asia, India, the Gulf etc are all PAL.
It definitely comes across that you enjoy the hunt just as much as you enjoy your collection. It will be bitter sweet when you finally complete it. I'll have to put the effort in to get to one of these markets before that happens so we can shoot the sh*t and grab a beer pal.

Izzy Olympic Quest came out on Sega Genesis as well. With it's inconsistent framerate here making it unplayable, I can't imagine what it plays like on a MD.
It's play ok.
@@RetroGamerBoyI think it's a problem with the physics engine. It slows down when you jump in the NTSC version, but it's still hard to predict. It's like everyone now and then a rubberband grabs your foot then it relaxes and then it tightens again. It's not a good platformer. I'd like it to be since it is so colorful and full of hidden secrets. The characters look OK. I played the SNES version too, and it has the same issues.

I did enjoy the market but they need a bigger venue I got some decent stuff but I would have stayed longer and spent more if it wasn't sooo packed made it close to impossible to have a proper look on a lot of stalls.

Problem at these cons is the over ebay prices. And worse condition than the ebay but there jems out there just got to weed them out get to gold
I'm very particular. And I'm keen not to contribute to over-pricing the market. Everything I bought I got at about 30% less eBay prices. The PAL Mega Dive was 50% cheaper. What I do hate is that UK sellers will sell at the highest price regardless of condition. It happens in North America as well but there is a more honest approach to pricing when it comes to condition.

The London market just gone was not the best. Over crowded and expensive. I've been collecting games for a long time but the prices people are, seeming willing to pay for, at best average games is shocking.

ive got the pal 1 megadrive or hong kong version as its known,its made in japan where the regular pal europe is made in china. is it better made i dont know both are excellent ,it has a serial modem port and another ch im not sure of.
The launch euro MD MK1 also has the serial port for the modem. But the modem never made it over here.
