This guy has a gift. I'm not sure what it is exactly, but he just conned me into watching a 20 minute video about a fish tank filter. And I may have laughed a few times.
I love this comment so much, lol!
I just wanted to watch until I learned how to run my filter and I found the answer a few minutes in... I ended up watching the whole video!!
So it wasnât a con you got something back lol
me & my mom have been struggling with this filter for like a half hour đ
I'm struggling right now.... I add the water.. and plug it again and the noise still there...
@@CarolinaLopez-gu9be let it run awhile and prime it. Also ck the impeller ... is it upside down or missing the rod or tip pieces. I had a smaller one I lost the rod it spun on so it was noisy.
@@higuys852 thank you it was broke, but the give me a new one.
Thatâs whatâs happening with me and my mom
I plugged mine in and it worked in minutes. Just give it time it will work đ
I use this filter in 2 aquariums and I love it. It works great for me & I recommend it over other HOB filters especially for new people into the hobby.
Your cat walking across the tanks is adorableđ
Time stamp?
@@Idkbutcooliguess I watched it on my phone,I don't have a time stamp âčïž
@@Idkbutcooliguess 18:12 I found it,I'm sorry my mistake
@@jefferyfranklin3033 thx
Have had a Top Fin for awhile...the very same one for about 3 years. Still going strong and surprisingly quiet!
I am a new purchaser, have you upgraded anything inside the filter or only have purchased those replaceable cartridges?
@@curseknight5 only the replaceable cartridges
One question I have did any fish die from it because the bacteria going away every time u get a new one or how I change your cartridge once u have too
Out grow I have been keeping fish for over 15 years and I have never outgrown hang on back filters. Most of my tanks have hang on backs, and sponge filters. Love these reviews, keep up the good work!
See, the directions that came with my Top Fin filter were sparse and I had no idea about putting water in the filter to make it run. Why donât they tell you this important info?!?! Thankful for channels like yours that are helping this new fish owner, because the pet stores and companies that sell aquarium products are really falling short here.
I didn't know about the water either and that's why I found this video!
I made the same mistake. I had fish before but it was weird to me that there were no water flow. The noise of the filter was bothering me a bit so I said let me look this up. And boom. I just laughed and put water in it. The fish all moved cuz itâs like what the hay
@@reinawilson8989 they had the instruction under the bottom of the filter. But I think most of ppl doesn't check it. They should have a quick manual in paper or put that instruct on the box.
You didn't completely read the directions then. Mine said everything he did other than opinion.
Yea they also dont tell u that this filter comes with their betta made specific tank set, but is too strong for your betta and have to buy their Top fin exclusive hanging bettaflo filter separately. This is why I dont like Topfin lol. They are affordable and great for beginners though.
This is perfect for my quarantine tank, and it came with a whole tank kit which was awesome for new hobbyists too.
Same!
it was amazing, i saved SO much money buying these kits! 37 gallon kit for only $110
@@alyssachisholm9461 i just bought the 29 gallon kit (black friday) for 75!
It's that noise that I had problems with. Came to CZcams to figure it out. You stressed on that exact point. Thanks a lot for making this đ You made my day.
Mine keeps making the noise
I have one of these and I actually like how it looks. It's very unobtrusive and runs quietly. The indicator works well for me.
It also does NOT need priming at water change, only at initial start.
Peter Nagy lol, you wrote almost exactly what I just did. However, if you drop the water level below the âMinimumâ line as indicated on the intake tube, you usually will have to reprime the filter each time. Weâve got three running, and thatâs my only complaint, and mostly because Iâm a clutz with water changes đ
I had bad luck with these. First one was DOA and my second one died after a week. Just my personal experience but now I run a Marineland 200b and its been working out great.
The indicator is great. There's a spillover area if your mechanical filtration is clogged. All the indicator does is let you know if water is escaping via the spillover without passing through the filter. You can adjust the pump to get maximum flow without letting water spillover without taking off the lid.
Same here have exact one.
Mine always needs priming. It has low flow like if I turn it down lower than 1/2 it barely drips out. As soon as the filter looses power, it drains all the water completely out. However my 5 gallon setup with the 10 gallon filter works perfectly. I can't figure it out. I've done all the problem checking I know & everything I've looked up told me to do what I already did. Then my daughter took it apart & looked in it also for any pieces or whole snails or gravel (as her young eyes are better) & didn't find anything wrong. I'm using it with the 20 gallon setup i got for my snails. Also neither one of my filters I have ever show when to change the filters.
You singlehandedly saved my life. No joke. I'm new keeper and I couldn't figure out how to make the filter workđ I didn't know you have to pour water in it
exactly why iâm heređđ
My filter continuously making noise . What should I do. Have I damaged my filter. I did not put water into the filter before I started it
Thank you guys soooo much I was wondering why it wasnât running but itâs cause I didnât add water
Since you hate this filter so much I'm more than willing to take it off your hands. I like things that are "just fine". You seriously cracked me up today. I hope the rest of the filters don't tick you off so much. Love your red and white Oscar. Thanks for the demos. Calm down. Take care đ â€ïž
Good review. I am a new fishkeeper and I feel like I'm learning but then realize there is still so much I don't know. I absolutely love it though. Can't get enough. Love your video's. Thanks for sharing and teaching people like me.
I have one of these.. purchased with an aquarium at a garage sale. It works.. I modified with a sponge. A little noisy but does the trick..
Thanks again for this series, very useful information.
Hey John I actually use that filter on my 20 gal tank. I used others and the reality is that it really boils down to aesthetics. The filter does exactly what it is ment to do. I will be upgrading to a 60 gal tank and would mind having an other filter for that tank. I will be running sponge filters and a hob.
big thank you for this! i got a 10G variant packaged with my aquarium kit(i'm rather new to the hobby) and was finding it hard to get a good idea for whether or not this filter would fit my needs or if i'd have to look for another one. Your honest review tells me that it might not be the best filter i can get, but for what it does at its price, it'll hopefully do what I need it to do (quiet, adjustable flow, and most importantly filter!) until i decide to look into a new one, whenever that might be. And, when I do decide to look into other filters further down the line, I'm definitely going to consider this series of filter reviews, you're very honest on your impressions on it and in video format it is easier to know how it works, even in ways that might seem glaringly obvious(i didn't realize it was a hang on back filter but seeing it in action makes a lot more sense).
Thanks for making a novice of larger tanks like me feel at ease. I love your humor! Great video!
Got one of these with a used tank I bought when I got back into the hobby a little over 2 years ago and it's worked fine for me over those 2 years and is still going strong and is pretty quiet.
Actually enjoy the reviews. Honest and to the point. Actually helping me figure out the best upgrades for my 10 and 30 gallon tanks.
I really dig the reviews Iâm just now getting in to fish keeping and setting up for the first time, and this kinda info really helps
I like these filter demos, John . Thank you.
I have a top fin 37 gallon tank from pet smart. I love it. Super quiet and indeed the indicator does work. It aligns with my schedule with water changes and filter changes. My fish are super happy.
I learned a lot with your videos and got me out of doubt about many things like caring and keeping fish thanks
Love these reviews! Simple and to the point thank you!
I like these filter reviews. I have had some them and it is interesting to compare what I think about them to what others think.
Your cat is so adorable!! Just cleaning himself and walking around lol! đđ
Love these videos ! Awesome to see the difference in each!!! Thank you!
I got the 79g one for my 75g bow front and it seemed really good the filter lasted about 3 weeks today I cleand them up and put it back in for a 2nd use!! seems to be nice soo far !!!
OMG thank you! You made it look so simple!
We just bought a 36g bow front tank set up online. It had this topfin filter with it. This was helpful just to see setup. We have whispers in our 10g and love them.
i like these filter reviews and would give this a home on one of my tanks for sure
I've used only top fin filters because they came in a starter set. They work well and are easy. Actually put a larger one in my 75 gallon last night. It was on sale for $30. Easy and cheap, win win.
You sir, are a life genius! Recently got a 5 gallon tank and a couple of completely aquatic African Dwarf Frogs and I had no idea why this filter kept not working til I watched your video. THANK YOU! :) Froggin' happy, ribbit.
Yes I like the filter show. It will help when I have to buy a new replacement
The cat photobombed you!!!!! LOL!!!!! Too funny!!! BTW, I love HOBs! I've tried everything and keep coming back to them. So simple, easy to maintain, and inexpensive, and does the job!
This is the one I have on my tank. Works great. Nice and quiet only needs primed once on initial start up and I use the blue cage with filter floss wrapped around and I dont use the carbon or the cartridge filters. The back is nice and open of you want to drop a sponge inside it.
It doesn't even look bad. It looks like a filter.
I have a Topfin for a 75 gal on my 125 gal just for water polishing. I just use poly fill and it does a great job for that.
I had this filter and have run it for about 7 months. It was great in the beginning and after a little messing with it stayed quiet occasionally had to mess with it to get it back to quiet after water changes but literally 3 hours after watching this video when you uploaded it the motor on mine started grinding. Hours of messing with it trying everything to get the impeller to stop grinding and nothing. Thankfully the store I originally got it from was willing to exchange it because of how bad the issues with it were.
Great videos my friend. They are getting me back into the hobby after the holidays!
Loving the filter review series, Great Job!
I got this after Christmas to replace my annoying internal power filter. I love mine, so much room for modifications!!!
Thank you so much this was every helpful for us more than the written instructions
I have been subscribed for a while now. I have multiple different filters and could always use another for a back up. Thanks for the work you do.
All of these filters work pretty good...just have to hot rod them. Great backup filters..I also use them when for seeding sponges to start new tanks I run with sponge filters only.
Really enjoy these filter reviews, looking forward to the final one though to find out what your favourite filter is đ€
I like these filter reviews. Thanks for doing them.
i just picked up the 10 gal top fin starter kit for my betta and zebra danios, set up the tank and wasnt too sure what i was doing so this video answered my questions! thanks soo much for this video. next up is stocking with some live plants for my betta, hes in a little dainty 2 gallon container and deserved this new home! originally i was gonna go big and start with a 40+ gallon tank but i dont want to rush into it too much and have issues i can avoid so i think starting with this 10 gallon is perfect!
I got this filter a month or so ago with a Topfin Starter kit (PF20 variant). After everything I've been through with my tank (My daughte and I are novices and we've made a ton of mistakes, and lost 8 guppies so far), I decided today to move away from the PF20, and upgrading to a Topfin Pro 30 Powerfilter. Not a fan of the single thin filter. That being said, this filter did help me get my tank established, and I'll run it along side my new filter for a few weeks while the new one gets seeded. It was a great filter for when I got started... but once the veil was lifted by doing research, it was tough to hold on to after learning about the more advanced models.
Just got my first fish tank, and watched this video to set up my filter. My wife thought I was watching Umbrella Academy without her because your voice is identical to the character Hazel. Donât know if anyone has ever told you that! Great video, and thanks for helping us get started on our fish keeping journey!
Thanks a lot. I didnât add the water thatâs why it wasnât working. Now it worked !
The good thing about this series of filters is their slim profile, which is also their con. Mine came with the kit. I pimped it out by using the Tetra frame filters and replacing the carbon with ceramic rings. I put foam in front of the blue prickly thing. I also put a prefilter on the intake. Because the intake tube is fat, I used the prefilter for a goldfish pond pump and trimmed it down with scissors. It would otherwise not have fitted against the back of the aquarium.
Wow. God bless you sir. I was about to return my third new-out of the box filter because it wasn't filtering any water. Nowhere on the box or the instructions does the manufacturer recommend pouring water in it at first. WOW. I am impressed. Thank you sir. You just solved my dilemma of why am I getting only faulty power filters, like 3 in a row, no way.
I'm just setting up a new tank and went on line to get some into and saw this video. Very informative.
This is a good filter for a quick, emergent, cheap filter that will do the job. Like you said. I would use this for my quarentine tank for sure.
One came with my lil hospital tank kit. I put my own media in it. hate cartridges
I have a small Top Fin hang on back. I really like it. Is it great? Nah, but it works just fine. My Endlers seem to enjoy âsurfingâ on the flow of the filter. I do not use the filters cartridges. I bought a Fluval sponge/ bio-rings replacement kit and I installed that instead. I also added an intake sponge. Enjoying this series, keep it up!
I have had the aqueon quietflow for a few years now! It works âjust fine.â Lol never had problems!
Ever had the led gimmic work? Mine wonât!
AJ Productions ehhh kinda. I donât really rely on it though.
This was a very useful video, we were setting up my daughters tank and thought the filter was broken until we let run for a few minutes. Thank you đ
What kind of noise was it making?
I have two of these and theyâre the bomb. No problems ever and I use cut to fit filter with the charcoal filled inserts, my fish are always healthy and super happy. Go buy one and remember to prime it with water before you start it up
I have 2 of those. A pf10 and a pf75 and I love them.
This filter would be perfect for my 30-gallon tank and I do love these videos
I enjoyed this video. It was helpful, and holy cow, you admitted you missed something, love that. Well done.
You should go through and show us the best way to mod/pimp out these HOB filters. đđ»đđ» part 2 of this series đ
I agree! I've made a few feeble attempts but didn't put much effort in it. I have an aquaclear on my other tanks but the top fins that came in the kit work fine. It's always good to have back ups or extra filtration sometimes.
I was so stressed when it was making that noise, it would have been nice if they included to put water in the instructions, but thank you man.
Honest review....Thank you! Seachem is still my #1 choice.....and I only have oneđ
Thanks for the videos, John! Fun series!
Thanks for explaining the filter part, it helped me out. đ
This is perfect, I just got this filter in a set
I have 3 of these filters; Top Fin, Marineland and Aquaclear. Aquaclear is my favorite.
I just purchased a 20-gallon Top Fin tank kit with this filter. However, the price for the cartridges is costly. Therefore, I am testing the filter's workmanship before I buy the cartridges. Honestly, the Marineland's have worked great for my tanks with inexpensive cartridges.
Thank you guys for all your outstanding insight.
I have an extra 5.5 gallon kit with this filter. I don't like that it's not self-priming. I do like that it's quiet, works well, has flow control, and has the longest/most adjustable intake tube I've seen on a HOB.
My 12 year son has really taken an interest in the hobby and all the help making his experience enjoyable is appreciated. Any of these filters would make him excited. đ
TEAMRamey go to fishlore.com where you can get a ton of answers
I got one of these when I bought a used 40 breeder tank. I initially thought it was broken because it wouldn't move any water. I took a closer look when it started making that weird noise and read under the filter and it said somewhere under it, do not run dry or something like that. It's really quiet now that it's "primed."
đ thank you. Got my filter working after watching this video!!
Super impressed with that Top Fin. Not bad at all!
Love these videos John, keep them coming
I appreciate all the info you provide.
I'm new to fish keeping, my first HOB filter was the marineland penguin 200 biowheel, it lasted 4 days before I came home to it not running, I was not happy. I returned it and replaced it with a fluval. No complains..... yet lol
Hard to beat Fluval products. I especially love their tanks.
The cat like do an little fish watching on the top your fish tank. đ đ đ đ
Lol... it's fine
One benefit of not having the pump in the tank is less profile in the tank. My aquaclears just have the intake and the actual filter is hidden by a painted back of the tank. However I like to have at least one these styles (perfer Tetra or Aqueon) so if there is an outage some filtration comes back on.
First time to have a fish tank. I got headaches out of the noise of the filter, then I realized that the filter is not wet and there is no bubbles are produced to get oxygen into the tank, I left it for a whole night and it got louder and louder, then I searched for videos to find out why the filter is dry still and I got this video, thank you so much, you saved my kids' fishes.
Thanks to you , because i was going to take it back and continy with my old wisper.
I have this filter on my first tank. Does the job.
I appreciate your options very much. keep it up!
I enjoy seeing the differences and comparing what I would prefer for a new purchase.
Great info! awesome reviews to see the filters in action.
Love the reviews, thank you.
Definitely can use. I love top fin products!!!
Hey John, thanks for another informative video. I agree with you ,I personally prefer Marineland & Aqua clear. Thanks
Bought a pf10 at petsmart. 9.99 on sale. Cut a sponge filter to size and this is perfect for the money.
Wow that is so cool I can use Enoughother fillter for one of my fish tanks i do enjoy watching your videos continue making good videos. Ok
Have the same filter, and as a beginner it works great.
I just got a pf75 for my 55 gallon tank with cichlids. Does push alot of water for sure and isn't loud.
out of all the filters you reviewed so far the tidal is the best, i use them and love them.also use aqua clear 70
Thank you!! †to the point and just what I needed!!
I just got another 20 gal high and really want a new filter. I am. A subscriber and watch all your videos!!
your right about changing it after first maintenance I added sponges and bio
Thanks for the reviews!
Thanks for the review !
Another nice review. Enjoying this series
