The Rock of Gibraltar story caused some mess in the United dressing room as well. After than infamous Roy Keane interview on MUTV, Fergie criticised Keane for attacking his teammates. Keane suggested to let the players decide if he was wrong so Fergie called everyone including the staff to watch it together.
Van der Sar thought Keane was out of line so Keane attacked him. Van Nistelrooy took van der Sar's side so Keane attacked Van Nistelrooy before lashing out at Fergie saying "You brought your private life into the club with your argument with Magnier."
The argument continued for days before Fergie sold Keane.

Allan Anderson Well, I have always been impressed with how the club has been run - even under the Glazers, United have run smooth and have had less controversies compared to other big clubs like Barcelona or Juventus. I think despite being a global super club, possibly even the biggest club in the world, United have kept their feet on the ground, have great connection with the fans and have done fantastic work on and off the pitch. That's what I think anyway.
sounds like Keane was right. He did his private dealings into the club dealings and affected things. The great Sir Alex CAN make mistakes.

Well no, the Irish duo sold out to whoever was circling. The glazers were looking for a shoe in and took the opportunity when it arose. But the chairman should hold a veto over such takeovers imo
Fergie's great things were also due to the great team around him, including Brian Kidd who looked after players.

Funny to think about that a verbal agreement over a horse made United lose their dominance over the Premier League. If it wasn't for that, they still would've had Keane, team unity and owners who wouldn't take hundreds of millions of pounds out of the club.
Nice butterfly effect though: everyone lost. Magnier and McManus lost their shares in United which over the years surely were worth more than RoG; Fergie and his son lost publicity and the team lost the owners who would leave the club alone rather than exploit it.

I'd imagine his lack of leverage (since it was a verbal agreement) and trying to recoup any financial losses and respect he lost initiating the case.
Because he basically didnt have a leg to stand on. The original agreement was only verbal in the first place. He was only ever basically an 'honorary' owner, firstly designed to give the horse a bit of publicity early in its life, secondly to allow Fergie to pow wow in the paddock and winners enclosure, and generally have a nice day out - Fergie loved his racing. He didnt have to help manage the horse on a day to day basis, pay for veterinary bills, transportation or general upkeep. We all know fergie was obsessed by money, he didnt like others making lots of money unless he was too - see the Rooney wage incident! A well known tight arse, he paid 100 pounds for his first ever player and was famously quoted 'it was a hundred pounds too much'. Brilliant manager and actually quite a ruthless shrewd businessman, but this Rock of Gibraltar stuff was just taking the piss, he went too far with this one.
The Magnierâs mustâve really hated Fergie to have sold us to the Glazers. They mustâve known they were wronguns and decided to sell to spite Fergie. Now he has to sit and watch as the Glazers destroy the legacy he spent 26 years building.
It's not a case of Magnier and Mc Manus , knowing about the Glazers and how things may turn out , they sold their majority shareholdings to the highest bidders and because it just wasn't worth the hassle , the fact is , Ferguson got greedy , he was given a half ownership of Rock of Gibraltar as a foal on a mutual agreement , no contracts , papers signed etc , just a good will gesture by Magnier . Ferguson didn't have to pay a penny to the Horses upkeep , Training, Vet Fees , Feeding etc , and won a nice few Bob on his winnings , he shared this 50/50 with Magniers Wife , who was the other joint owner . It was only when the Horse became so successful and was worth astronomical fees from a stud angle , it became messy . Magnier and Mc Manus , done the right thing , best to make a clean break from Ferguson and Utd.

As the great king Lionheart Richard had said, " A kingdom for a horse?". Fergie sold our soul for a horse.

Another reason why sir Alex was so loathe to ever criticise the glazers or endorse the yellow and green scarf movement. He realised his part in Magnier and McManus selling the soul of Man Utd to the devil. A legacy tarnished by greed as for all the trophies accumulated by the greatest manager of all time the end result is what you see now a lengthy decline a stadium in disrepair and owners who see United as a cash cow with no love for it. Sir Alex must feel pangs of guilt in how this sorry episode concluded.

What I always found interesting about this incident is the irony or hypocrisy of you like in this. Ferguson sold Beckham bc he did not like his off the field profile affecting his game(stats show it didn't) but what I see here was Fergie being a major distraction
