I think with all the hints scattered in the movie, I think that the King asked for Fairy Godmother to give him a spell that'll turn him human. And in exchange she cast a spell on Fiona so that she can have Prince Charming be the condition to break the spell and make him king of Far Far Away.

    • @tamarasmith9060
      @tamarasmith9060 Před rokem +21

Yeah, Fiona's dad was the Frog Prince (a prince from a neighboring land, but one that wasn't 1st in line to inherit the throne) & in return for making sure he found his princess & got his "happily ever after" by having his frog curse broken, then Godmother made him promise the hand of his future daughter in marriage to her son (who I guess was a toddler or preschooler then since he only seems a little older than Fiona) so that her son would one day be king. It's confirmed in Shrek 3 that Far Far Away is originally the kingdom of Fiona's maternal granddad, so Harold didn't really care about whether he had a biological son or daughter. He himself would be gaining the throne by marriage so it was fine with him if his successor got it the same way. He just wanted to be human again & have a family of his own.
So then I wonder who cursed Harold into being a frog & put him all the way in the gardens of another kingdom where the king didn't have a son but only a daughter or daughters? Maybe Godmother has been around long enough that she finally decided that wasn't enough & she wants to set up a retirement plan for becoming a queen mother. Then she doesn't have the responsibility of a queen, but gets all the glory & lifestyle of a queen.

His wife talks about them taking "long walks by the lily pond," and their bedroom is decorated with lots of lily pad imagery (and his wife is named Lillian... not subtle when I think about it). In addition to this, the frog at the bar asks Harold , "Do I know you from somewhere?" She may be an ex-girlfriend from his time as a frog XD

    References you might have missed:
-all the elements in the Fairy godmother's song reference classic Disney Princesses, from the talking furniture (beauty and the beast) to the tailor-mice (cinderella), the song itself is just mocking disney musical acts. Ariel is also referenced in the beach picnic scene, the sleeping beauty falls out of her carriage at the red carpet... Basically it's never a flattering portrayal (Katzenberg takes every chance he got to shit on Disney)
-When Puss rips shrek's shirt apart from the inside making it seem like he's emerging from shrek's belly, that's an alien reference
    - Donkey says "my donkey-senses are tingling all over" (about the potion) which is a reference to spiderman's "spider-sense"
-the lady commenting the red carpet is an actual comedian who used to comment fashion events, young Joan Rivers
-the big gingerbread man is obviously a Godzilla reference, and that same scene you can see people exiting a Starbucks screaming just to run to another Starbucks across the street 💀
-Puss draws a P on a tree with his sword as he introduces himself, which is a Zorro reference (who usually leaves Zs). Antonio Banderas, who voices Puss, also played, among others, Zorro.

Shrek II is my favourite of the whole series. I like them all but II just hits all the right notes. The king being a frog is a take on The Frog Prince a classic fairytale where a prince had been turned into a frog by an evil sorceress and could only be turned back by the kiss of his true love or princess I can't remember. Anyway it alludes to fact that the Fairy Godmother had something to do with it whether it was just hooking him up with the happily ever after potion or something else darker like cursing him in the first place so he would owe her and could leverage that against him once she had "cured" him.

Actually the classic written fairtale (not in later popculture)is called "The Frog King" and the frog is NOT turned back into a prince by a kiss but by a more violent way: The frog dived up a golden ball from the princess and demands more and more favoures from her in return. She even allowed him to get into bed with her but when he demands a kiss she throws him against a wall and THAT turns him back, which is a very important detail for me because it is about setting bountaries, that's why I always get annoyed that people think the frog is saved by a kiss. There are even version of the story were he is beheaded.. The only fairtale charakter I know that is saved by a kiss is Sleeping Beauty even Snow White is not saved by a kiss either (again I'm talking about the original written fairtales).

The frog-king is a reference to the fairy tale, "The Frog Prince." That's why the queen didn't freak out when he was turned back into a frog. Turning back was Fairy Godmother's threat to him. He never took the potion, but he didn't want the whole kingdom of Far Far Away to know about his froggy heratige because the kingdom would turn on him, and quite possibly turn on Queen Lillian, too. There is also a rumor circulating about Fairy Godmother being the one who cursed Fiona in the first place, and she's been playing 4-D chess with the kingdom and the royal family, just to make her son a legitimate ruler and gain royal status, herself. So, in a way, she's playing 4-D chess with Charming, too.

So, I have a Theory: Fairy godmother put the spell on Fiona to force the king to look for a cure. I think she felt like she didn't get her dues for helping him and that's why she holds it over his head that she could turn him back. I think she put the spell on her and the king doesn't question it's because he was originally a frog. He thinks it's his fault because of this and asks her for help again. Fairy Godmother says yes but Fiona has to marry her son in exchange for her help. I think she put the spell on Fiona to force this situation so she could give her son what he wants(The crown)... Anyone else think this is the case?

Strange you would say that Shrek is making all kinds of mistakes. In reality, Shrek predicted most of this would happen and he is attempting to mitigate the problems caused by Fiona not considering what could happen to him.
Ostricise, humiliated, threatened and finally subject to assassination. Yeah I believe following Fiona's lead might have been a bit too hastey. Then what Shrek attempts to correct the situation leads directly into the Fairy Godmother's scheme. It's only Shrek's resolve, and a eleventh hour change of heart by the king that saves the day.
The choices Fiona makes in the beginning set up her husband four misery and death, which could of been avoided by listening to Shrek.

You mentioned in the first you know prince charming is bad but Farqward was never supposed to be prince charming. I just assumed as you hadn't seen them you had heard parts of both films and thought it was all about the first. Personally I think making the villain a fairy godmother was a genius move. Really showing how fairytale romance isn't as good as natural love. She can make wishes come true but its artificial. Puss in boots is an honorable character. He took an assassin job but when he filled to kill shrek and found out what Shrek was actually like as a person he stepped down and surrendered. Shrek let him live and so Puss joined him to assist on his journey.
The fairy godmother was intelligent. Shrek won when he stole the potion but then she worked it out. "Oh I believe this can work to our advantage" then she thought if the plot to replace shrek with charming. Fiona's dads happy ever after was not the potion but he was based on the Princess and the frog story. The fairy godmother here is supposed to be the one fixing all these tales. Fiona's dad did have a change of heart and took away the tea with the potion then redeemed himself fully when he protected shrek and was returned to his old form as a frog

Favorite character: Puss N Boots, Donkey
Technically, the Father and Mother are a play on the classic fairytale The Princess and the Frog. In which a prince, turned into a frog, convinces the princess to kiss him and let him sleep on her bed and eat her food, which breaks the spell on him. So in regards to Fiona's father, I assume that he fell in love with his wife and the fairy godmother helped him become human so he could be with her. And because he was originally a frog, that curse either transferred to his daughter or the godmother cursed his daughter so she could get her own child on a throne. And that's what she's threatening him with. To turn him back into a frog.
Its also almost a hint to other fairytales like Rapunzel or Rumpelstiltskin, where the protag makes a promise to give their first born child to a Witch type character to get a wish.

    1. Her father wasn’t a human at the first place for she kinda had non-human genes
    2. Fairy Godmother was the witch that cursed Fiona (in a reference of the fairytale of Maleficent).

I know I'm a late commenter but I also would like to mention if y'all didn't know, that the king and the queen is actually the princess and the frog, then maybe the king asked the fairy godmother to turn him human, and so she gives him his happily ever after, which she mentions in the movie where she would take away his happily ever after.
Also many people thought that the fairy godmother was gonna turn Shrek into a frog because the king intervened and turned into a frog, but I think that she was planning on making Shrek turn into bubbles (because the same blast hits the godmother which does turn her into bubbles) and when the king intervened he actually was not affected by the blast but the fairy godmothers death is what affected him, when she died all the magic she created un-did itself making the king turn back into his frog form
