  • OHMYGOD HEY!
I was recently invited to see OPERATION MINCEMEAT, the plucky new musical from Spitlip Theatre, in its new home at Riverside Studios!
I've been a big fan of this show since first seeing it in January 2020 at Southwark Playhouse and I'm thrilled to finally be telling you all about it.
Check out today's new vlog to find out all about this hilarious new show and see why i think it's the best new musical of the last few years even though it hasn't been eligible to win an Olivier award!

So glad to see more people talking about Mincemeat! I literally have seen it 10 times this year and it's amazing how fresh it still feels every single time. Every person I've dragged to see it has seen it multiple times since as well, honestly, even if you're unsure, just go see it. This level of talent is not something you come by often.

I don't agree. The music was so forgettable it might as well have been a play

I'm a massive fan of Felix Hagan, one of the artistic directors of Spitlip and one of the writer's of the show, and he's been talking about it for years! It is very exciting to hear that is picking up buzz/momentum in London (I'm not UK based so I wouldn't know aside from videos like this, so thank you very much MickeyJo). He's played songs from the show during concerts of his and I've loved all of them! Hope the show keeps it up and maybe gets to the West End 😄

I went to see it last night and thought it was great; Hestor definitely hit me - I was not prepared for tears. I think you're spot on with the Criterion, and who would enjoy it too - hard to define but 'Victoria Coren's daft jokes at the start of Only Connect' is quite close. The only thing I did think (and read elsewhere) is it could perhaps drop three songs. There's a moment towards the end of the show where it sounds like Charles is going to sing a reprise but gets cut off after a few words and I (ashamedly) felt a little "Oh thank god", not because it was at all bad, I was just slightly exhausted! Such a wonderful thing to see such great 'small' theatre.

I just saw the show today and I really loved it. After seeing you recommend it (among others) I just woke up with a rainy day today and though “Hmmmmm…. Theatre is in order”. Thank your for talking about this show because without others talking about it I would never have seen this incredible piece of theatre. I will now be annoying all my friends by recommending it to them endlessly. I also hope this show has a future in regional touring venues such as the Bristol Old Vic and others. I could see it going the way of Emma Rice’s Wise Children were its life is in touring and maybe a short west end run. I think that way more people get to see it and it keeps it fresh and exciting.

Wait, Operation Mincemeat (the movie) is playing in cinemas over there? Here in the US, it's a Netflix Original. So it's been mostly overlooked and no one ever discusses it. I just watched it two days ago and was struck by how well this story (which was brand new to me) could be made into a stage play because of it small cast, central location, and then small ensemble/doubled roles. So imagine my surprise to hear that there's a musical of it that does exactly that!

    • @hijklmnop42
      @hijklmnop42 Před 11 měsíci

I had to explain this to my US-based friends as well! In the UK, the movie of Operation Mincemeat was a proper theatrical release... honestly it's confusing how Netflix buys distribution rights and then labels things "Netflix Original", I've noticed it even with TV shows that have aired on national broadcast and now are labeled "Netflix Originals", more like "exclusively streaming on Netflix".

Saw this musical yesterday at the Riverside studio and it was fantastic. I felt it was similiar to the Play that went Wrong/The 39 Steps with the multiple characters being played by the actors and their comic timing. Of course, the music was great and memorable with mixture of rapping (Hamilton) and Six (strobe lighting) but original enough to hold its own. I would agree that for such a small cast, it must be physically demanding and hopefully if it transferred, there would be a bigger cast and swing. Great reviews by the way and keep it up! dimble_runs

Great review. Totally agree with all that you said and would love to see it at the Criterion. I'm annoyed that I only managed to see it for the first time on its second last night at the Riverside Studios. This is one bandwagon that I wish I had jumped on earlier.

I'd heard great things and had no regrets when I went to go see it a couple of weeks ago, so much fun!
Edit: Also, I saw the understudy Anouk Chalmers while I was there (loved her), she took the place of Zoe Roberts.
Its interesting you mention how few there are as my booking actually got cancelled twice, after the first was cancelled due to a cast injury (I presume David Cumming) I tried to rebook for a couple of days later but this was then cancelled again. I guess it forces their hand to try and get others in, like Sean Carey is for David at the moment

Hi MickeyJo, went on line to read reviews of the film Operation Mincemeat. I was forlorned that you don't also do a "hard" copy of your reviews as they are so smart, concise, and really give viewers an indepth review of the shows. Just an idea, however I'm sure you're as busy as an one armed paper hanger. So, if you get an extra life (or an understudy) perharps you could consider doing a review for the people who have missed your wonderful youTube reviews. Cheers, beers, & queers in hoping you consider the paper venues. Tim G. One of your devoted fans.

We saw this in Jan 2020. I thought it was quite ok and also entertaining, but somehow couldn't connect to the humour of the show. Maybe sometimes (as Germans) we don't get British humour, I can't think of anything else that could have went wrong, because the show has so many things to like (cast, multiroling etc.). I hope one day I will be able to give Operation Mincemeat another chance to see how it developed, but that will be hard because my partner REALLY hated it.

Are you asking why they aren’t putting it on in the actual war rooms? Probably because the war rooms aren’t a studio theatre space but a historical artefact - too difficult. If it’s why aren’t the war rooms mentioned, I wouldn’t know whether they do because sadly I’ve only heard the songs available on here and sound cloud.
