What happened to Zhou Yu’s forehand and reflex!?!? I thought he was a mid-distance player with an excellent backhand, but today he stuck close to the table and went totally crazy with his forehand. Can’t imagine how Ma Long managed to stay strong...

Zhou Yu with remarkable backhand skill push the Dragon to the edge of the cliff. Almost, Zhou defeated the Dragon; Almost, Zhou created history. But the Dragon flapped its wings, and fight back. With more active footwork, Dragon turned over Zhou's match point, and finally won the game.

You can’t survive mentally once you lose the third set there. Lost opportunity but great match!

The third set was the key
Something that sometimes disappoints me with Chinese players is how they crack under pressure. Very upsetting to see that happen when these people train so hard.
Well the difference between good players and best players is how they analyze their own game. Ma long changed to half distance to buy himself some time to react and switched sides much more. Changed the entire pacing of the match. If a player can read a game that well little any opponent can do.
@@lucienfantke Look at the point at 7:04, then again how he misses his forehand winner at 7:10. Then again 7:19. These were all simply errors at crucial opportunities. This is a clear example of Zhou Yu being ailed by his own head.
@@daniel-oc6pp of course losing that third set to tightly was the game changer. At some point experience and respect for that goat on the other side all influence the obvious. Put yourself in those shoes playing any super player. You’ll get more and more nervous the closer you get to a famous victory (whereas your opponent has been in those situations a million times it’s maybe your first). ;-) but still huge respect for the lefty to almost get Ma Long. Who knows what the future holds.
@@lucienfantke The difference is whether or not you can take that pressure and focus it into energy and excitement to win your match, or if fear of failure/pressure paralyses you, makes you hesitant, lose focus, lose balance, etc. Zhou Yu is no junior player. He's 28 years old, and table tennis athletes like him usually perform their best around this golden 27-29 age. In this match it really shows. He's also been in this sport playing against top Chinese players for a long time. He has the experience. He's been there plenty of times before.
Because of this I feel Zhou Yu's mental performance here is a little disappointing.
@@daniel-oc6pp I didn’t mean junior player. I actually meant B-level player. I agree with everything you are saying. But I don’t think it’s a Chinese phenomenon. Look at Timo sometimes clutching like crazy sometimes losing matches he should have won. (Matches in reference TB against LGY and on the other spectrum against FZD). Dima is even more extreme than that. What I mean is. Happens to most players. Not only Chinese. But yeah. Disappointed. But not fixed. Just happens. ;-)
