      What you said is very true Nao. We recently travelled in Japan and found that almost all Japanese people can understand English. It is not at all a problem asking anyone directions or any other random questions. Everyone understands basic English and responds to it. We used Google translate only to understand some Japanese signboards otherwise for conversation there was absolutely no need.

    These are very important tips to share and especially for first timers visiting Japan. I came back from my first trip recently, and one of the things I did noticed and learned is that speaking English to the locals as if they were still in school was the best option for me to talk to them so they would not be lost or confused. As I been studying Japanese for years and learning more by watching shows in Japanese, I did my best in using basic common phrases the locals use. And if it was something I had no idea how to say, I would use Google Translate and show them what I'm to say although Google Translate is not always 100% accurate. I do agree with this video when using English with them, and speaking slowly using important phrases is what is important.
    Was a little nervous at using Japanese phrases I learned but quickly got over it when I saw how the locals saw the effort I putting in my part communicating basic Japanese, and trying to overcome the language barrier even if it's not much of a difference.

    Google translate. A Japanese girl asked what I thought of her new dress. I replied, Google translate, "You look great!". Google interpreted that as "You look LARGE". Needless to say there was an awkward period as I tried to find out what happened. A better choice would have been "You look wonderful!". Papago and others suffer the same weaknesses. Beware "tech" solutions. Use with caution / care.

    Thank you for the video. Your videos have been very helpful. The way you described how the Japanese feel about speaking English to a foreigner is how I'm feeling about speaking Japanese in Japan when I go for the first time later this year.

    I'm traveling to Japan next year and started studying Japanese a couple of months ago (so I will have almost a year of study by the time I travel). I feel that the same things you say about speaking English to Japanese people apply equally to Japanese speaking to English speakers. I already know many words and sentences, like asking for directions, but I also know I will have a LOT of trouble understanding any answers I get to that question.

      I would advise you to learn how to read Japanese menu items if you plan to eat outside of tourist areas. Might want to watch this show since the Japanese is slower pace it is a good refences for most encounters 孤独のグルメ. Going to go at the end of September myself, have a good time.

      @@southcoastinventors6583 thank you so much for the show recommendation and yes, I'm definitely trying to learn to read as well. I traveled to Russia (several years ago) and was able to learn enough Russian and the Cyrillic alphabet to read menus and do shopping since I was going to be there for a couple of months. My goal is to learn much more Japanese than that.

    I didn't realize Japanese knew so many english words. I think simple words is the best advice. I do the same if trying to add in Japanese words. I only know simple words, not complete sentences.

    It's slightly hard to get in this mode right away, because talking like this to someone in America can be considered offensive. Initially I talked in more complex sentences, then switching to simple English depending on the response. At some point I came up with a mode where I make up the sentence to be simple, but even in the situation that the person speaks good English, not to sound too awkward (for them to assume that I assume they don't speak good English). 😅

      @JapanwithNao  Před měsícem +1

    Hmm, I'm planning to travel to Japan late in 2025. I figure that doing a couple of basic Japanese language courses before I go won't hurt. It is just not that learning to count to ten, telling left from right and asking how much will be practical. I also hope to gain both some basic insights into the culture and the ability to be polite. I have leant from travels in many lands that being polite, smiling, as well as a bit of pantomime gets you an awful long way in most parts of the world. Is Japan any different?

      Speaking Japanese, even if it's basic, definitely helps your trip to Japan 😘
      Smile saves the world, pantomime gets people's attention💯 But if you do it in the middle of Shibuya, people instantly think you are a comedian or performer😂

    Learn to ask "Where is the toilet?" in Japanese. Using gestures works well for many situations. But not that one. (^.^)

    So basically learn text book Japanese English. Also helpful to remember that Cherry blossom meat isn't what you think it is 🐴.
