hi, was wondering, but would these tires be fine for 2013 86
For summer: BRIDGESTONE TURANZA T006 215/45 R17 91Y
Winter: CONTINENTAL ICECONTACT 3 215/45 R17 91T
and the wheels maybe: BORBET Y (SHINY, BLACK) 7.5X17 ET47 5X100 64
Do you have any maintenance videos? Do you run 5w30 for daily driving?
I have a 23 WRX. Thanks
That dude with the older one has a great vibe. Love the type of people you have hanging out with you on this channel. Great comparison.
I think the fact that the 2nd gens actually make 250hp crank doesn’t get talked about enough, 228hp is a factory downplay
Don’t look at what vw does every gti I’ve seen on the dyno makes their crank hp to the wheel
It's like my 435i...I'm 100% sure it makes way more than 300hp/300lbs torque...but I guess BMW likes nice round numbers? lol
@kuruptzZz I was told by a powertrain calibration engineer that there is some flexibility in the conditions of the engine dyno when OEMs measure the power output to advertise. BMW is known to measure at absolute worst case. For instance, a fully heat soaked engine with hot coolant. So in your typical driving situations you actually have more power than advertised because you're in better conditions where the engine isn't pulling as much timing or boost.
European sports cars make more than figure generally
Same thing with the GR Supra, lot of people getting around 400 - 410 hp to the crank stock when it’s listed at 382hp from the factory.
I was the same, bought my first manual without knowing how to drive it. Its literally the best way to learn
best way to go through burnt clutch
I had a $1900 97 miata in high school during 2018 before car prices shot up. Man those were fun times!
I don't know if I'd recommend this, but I learned by finding an old 1982 civic on craigslist for $500. When we met up, I offered the guy an oz of weed for it. He accepted. I had no plate, no insurance...so I just rolled around in my neighborhood with my friend for a week, stalling it less and less each day. Eventually we both mastered it...but the clutch or something was definitely F'd by then, so I left it on the side of the road and ran away. RIP
@@langraman8756a week of learning isn't gonna do much to the clutch, maybe if it takes longer to learn then it could be a consideration
@@kuruptzZz Haha what a deal 😂
bro what. seeing this video was like you reading my mind. exactly what I was looking for for the last couple days.
Topher really does kno what we want
Literally same lmfao fr😂
The steering is the biggest pro on the 1st gen based on my experience owning a 2015 and now a 2024 BRZ.
Man The older ver. looks better actually!
As a previous 15 brz owner I've been waiting for a video like this! Thanks for all the great content good sir!
I drove a 22 BRZ the other day and was surprised by the amount of rev hang and how sloppy the stock shifter was compared to my ND2 30AE. The engine is great though... Actual torque!
Had to go drive my mom’s ND1 after reading this and it’s true! the BRZ doesn’t hold a candle to the responsiveness of a Miata. For pure driving thrills, Miata is still the answer
engine great? i wouldn't go that far lol
If you want rev hang, try driving the GR Corolla 😆. It's pretty hard to drive it smoothly normally and when going hard, it always slams into gear if you shift too fast.
@@nateTrhso looking back, Toyota didn't do a great job on the gr Corolla huh? I've never driven one but after watching lots of videos on it I kept wondering why so many people were in love with them. Especially with that really cheap looking interior.
@@porfiriato84 I actually got a few weeks in one and it's definitely a fun car. Interior is a little too sparse for me (BMW/Former Lexus owner) and storage space is a little bit of a let down but the powertrain is pretty great. It feels like a 90's car to drive: a tad unrefined but with lots of character. It's a good throwback car and it shines on loose surfaces but I have heard it's a little disappointing on the track. My main issue is that it's not good enough on track and the interior just isn't for me ad a daily, but it is a good car for people that don't care about those two issues.
Owning an 01 S2K & 13 BRZ for many moons. Really taught me how to constantly be in the power band in all situations. Great cars for any beginners to learn proper power output.
Did u prefer the brz or s2k
@@YourSimRacingGuy With the S2000 you really had to understand cornering otherwise you could experience a sudden snap oversteer; whereas the BRZ was far more predictable. But the S2000 had higher cornering capabilities. The BRZ had incredible steering feel, something the S2000 really lacked. The aerodynamics obviously on the S2000 were awful giving it is a convertible. Put everything about the S2000 in a BRZ body, you’ve got gold. That being said, I’d take the S2000 over the BRZ.
I believe you have Mtech clutch spring. That might be contributing to the difference in clutch feel as well. Proud owner of a 2017 BRZ here.
lol was searching for a comparaison between the two and the vid is a week old, perfect timing
I’ve been waiting for a vid like this!!! Awesome.
i luv my ‘23 GR86, always fun to see the twin car and the small differences. thanks for sharing another great video sir
my fav Topher topic
Awesome video.... love from MRT Performance!
Loved the video. Agreed with your takes, esp on first gen being more raw and better steering. Makes me miss mine a bit 🥲
Really enjoy your vids btw Topher
Just the video I was looking for, thanks Topher! Deciding between these two (and maybe an ND Miata) in addition to my beloved CX-30 turbo. Lots of good choices, keep up the great content!!
with quality control issues like RTV and the inherent bad design of engine eventually wears the ringlands or connecting rods, id recommend a 340i w a b58 or 240i for smaller 2 door
S2000
@@BopperNoStopperthose aren’t comparable at all
@@bradyg499 fr like what
Great idea and great thumbnail. Killing it.
The color codes for these cars are not the same. That is why they look different
Subaru changed the WRB paint starting in 2015+, to a darker shade of blue.
It was super considerate of you to have thought about his seat position. As always, you're a class act.
Nice comparison. This makes me not really want the new gen BRZ. I have 15 BRZ. Love driving it on local streets within the city during low traffic hours. My Porsche GT 6 speed is not any better in feel. The BRZ certainly is a true sports car as long as one accepts its limitations.
Very humble of you to drive a brz when you own a carrera gt
What a great video! As a former 2017 BRZ owner, I enjoyed this video.
How was your experience with the brz? Thinking about getting one
Good assessment of both cars, completely agree based on my experiences.
17:43 60k miles and probably many times of riding the clutch as a first time learner in that car. swapping it out for a stage 2 will make it more fun
It’s true about header and tune.
For my 2017 BRZ, I did the ECU TEK tune with the ACE350 header, AWE mid pipe and catback track exhaust. That really woke the car up. More importantly, got rid of the TQ dip.
Ran against my friend’s 2022 BRZ and till 45 mph we were even and then he started to slowly pull away. At 70-75 mph, he was a car and a half ahead of me.
-
The steering and visceral feel are better with the gen one. Yes, NVH is better (quieter, more livable) in the gen two.
Just installed a k&n intake and boy does that make downshifting that much more fun. The 2014 does sound much better stock. Once you get rid of the stock resonator on 2nd gen intake though, it comes alive with a cacophony of sound lol.
ngl, I like the rear end of the 2014 BRZ more
100% the rear is sooo much better on the first gen. the front i'd say there are things better on both of them pretty much. Overall I would always go with the first gen looks wise
the 1st gen BRZs sound beautiful with that classic boxer rumble while the newers ones dont have it anymore...same with the WRXs pre 2015 and after
7:30 17x7.5 in the new one
22:00 Piped in sound
24:00 Do it all sports car, cheap to maintain
25:30 Second gen better overall
Very nice video bro! Make more videos likes this
This is dope asf watchin as a 2014 brz owner
Which axle back do you have on your BRZ? it sounded great and I've been looking for one for mine.
love the car guys. seat height correction made my day.
Have u considered swapping out your indicator stalks for the old one since i heard both are compatible?
Perhaps an fk8 va fl5 video soon? 👀
what phone mount are u using and are u using wireless carplay adapter?
Looking to get a 2020 GT 86! This confirmed it thank u!!!
Try the 22 with Prius tires. The premium sticks too much and becomes a little unpredictable because the limits are more strict. It corners better than any car on the road, but you can't hang the tail out without at least a little risk of looping.
The topher's 22 brz initially already came with the primacy
Question, does ur 2022 BRZ have steering assisted lights? That’d explain lack of directional thingy.
Did you ever have to replace your clutch on your old BRZ? My throw out bearing disintegrated at 80k miles.
I personally love the factory tuning on the first gen's. with it being a good all rounder sports car, if you ride in the torque dip, or just below 4k RPM's, ive been able to get 40+ MPG out of my stock 13 BRZ. which is awesome if its your only car, it can be a economical commuter, and a fun weekend corner carver.
I very much like the concept of these cars. That front-midship engine location -that is a classic for front engine RWD sports cars- is combined with the benefits of a low flat engine configuration. Additionally it is a short 4-cylinder engine, that is even more beneficial for the cornering moment of inertia.
I.e. front-midship boxer engine and a rear wheel drive. Delicious!
There's only one thing which can be better layout-wise: a mid-engine low flat boxer and a rear wheel drive (Boxter and Cayman).
Is there a difference between the pedal dance and just pressing the track and tcs button at the same time for 5 seconds?
Any suggestions on source for the header (equal or unequal?) manufacturer, ECU flash, and what the rest of the exhaust should be? I think Todd and Paul over at Everyday Driver did this on their '14 FRS. It looks tempting. Would be interesting to see how the second iteration of the first gen stacks up. I have a '17, which got the tiny HP and torque bump, plus shorter final drive. (Think mine needs two shifts to hit 60, whereas the original could hit 60 in second). I bought the Performance Pack too, which got me slightly wider wheels, Brembo brakes, and SACHS dampers. (You had to get the Limited to get the PP, but once at the Limited, the PP was a bargain at $ 1200. Those days of the "bargain" are gone with the new tSi). Thinking if I can just get enough more pop from the engine, it could be a nice way to not want to trade up (and trade off some of the things that faded a bit on Gen 2). Great review, great idea to do this. I'm barely over 30K miles on mine.
JDL UEL catless header is the ideal header. I own both gens, and while my 1st gen has full bolts-on (w/ Tomei UEL), OFT tune, and e85...my stock 2023 BRZ is still noticeably faster. These 2nd gens are essentially on par with a supercharged 1st gen running low boost. To back this claim up, D-Sport Magazine has recorded a stock 2022 GR86 with 221.25 whp, and a Vortech Supercharged 2017 86 with 228.20 whp on the same dyno.
@@moldyrefrigerator Thanks for all the info and info from D-Sport. Yeah, I've heard the whispers that the official HP and torque ratings on the Gen 2 are sandbagged. I'm really afraid that if I were to drive the Gen 2, my brain would want to do something irrational, like immediately trade up! I really need to focus more on finding something suitable to replace my '14 Forester XT. Lots of test drives, nothing really hitting my sweet spot.
It kinda seems like the 2nd generation BRZ has a little bit of rev hang. Is it more noticeable than the 1st gen?
I have a 2024 limited brz in red on order, excited as hell to get it. What blind spot mirrors are those?
Local parts store blind spot mirrors. They don’t look great but they’re super functional
Fun cars. The 2020 86 was my first car and honestly I never felt like it lacked power. Plenty of fun around town and in a lot of ways, more fun than fast cars because you could actually get through a couple gears before you were going illegal speeds lol. "Comparison is the thief of joy" has never applied more to a car than the first gen 86 haha.
My first manual was a motorcycle 😄
And I almost got pulled over for speeding before I even took my motorcycle license course 🤣
Definitely a sign that your heart is eager to drive a cool vehicle!
Dynos reading 155whp for first gen and 215 whp for 2nd gen. That's huge.
@TheTopher From your experience, do you feel that a gen1 with a Header OFT on E85 would match the power and torque of the gen2?
I love my FRS but the lack of power gets to me sometimes
As long as you get an Equal length header with E85, it should be close power wise. I think the torque might still be a lot better on gen 2 though.
@BRZguy Thanks man!
This is exactly right, my gr86 makes my old brz even with e85 tuned feel sluggish @@BRZguy
@@Austinomon Yeah can't really replace the displacement as far as torque is concerned.
Review with the 2014 brz and s2000 would be great
2014 has real sound for one
I have the 22 in silver after pre ordering it. Had an issue with oil intake and ended up having to replace the small engine block. Otherwise legit my favorite thing I own, the dealership even covered half the cost of repair. If you have a young kid looking for their first car, highly recommend.
Was it out of warranty at that point? Why wasn't it covered fully?
@@benedictl6716 I fought them on it but they claimed it was a maintenance issue even though I should have had a service message.
The new BRZ is a much better daily, but the first gen is just so much more charming. As a pure "fun" car I'd have a first gen all day.
Also in 2015 Subaru made world rally blue darker so all brzs from 2015 and up have the same WRB as the 2nd gens, the 2012 to 2014 brzs like the one in this video have the older/lighter blue
Good to know!
How is the 2nd gen wind noise with both windows down? I'm an avid windows-down driver, but both of my current cars have intolerable buffeting at speeds 45mph+. What speed does buffeting start on the new BRZ?
You would want verus anti buffeting part put on your car.
I owned a 17 brz for 5 years. After being sold and about 2 years later have a 17 gt86. I really like the platform but unsure if I’d want to trade for the new integra or not.
The new integra is gross lol. Unless it's a type S, just get a civic SI or Wrx.
"Bought it before you learned to drive stick"
So, I spend my entire adolescent life trying to get my friends to teach me how to drive stick on their cars, but they never did. They would give me the ultra basics about how it goes into gears, how you have to push the clutch in, etc. But, I never got any seat time.
In my 20s, I finally found a 2005 Subaru WRX STi that I could afford that was in great shape, so I bought it. Before I picked it up, I watched a bunch of CZcams videos on how to really operate it, and the first time I drove stick was when I left the lot with my new (to me) STi. It was a stressful drive home, but it was well worth it.
Do you not have the crickets in your 2022? I hear them in mine when temps are below 50 outside.
I don’t, never heard them - but had some on this tS we tested this week. Not sure why 🤷♂️
Can we get a Tutorial on Driving Stick? I know there are other CZcamsrs who teach it, but not from Topher himself!
Istg is it me or does the brz 2014 have a toyota chime
I owned a 2014... I was rear ended and it was totaled :/... I definitely wouldn't want to own a boxer engine car over 120-150k miles. But other than that it was a great handling car.
Coming from a '13 FRS into a '23 BRZ I'd call them more different than similar. The FRS was a true sports car, the new BRZ is a grand tourer. I wish there was a way to improve the steering in the '23. Who thought that number steering and less driver engagement was a good thing?
You should do a video on a second gen is250/350
The heat exchanger under the oil filter in the second gen can be installed on the first gen. It's nearly identical to the Forestee/WRX one; the bungs are positioned nicer for routing the coolant hoses in the BRZ, and they're the same size, which is also nice.
I did that to my 2014, had to keep an eye on leaks, but it was a good solution for slightly better temps on track and faster warm-ups on cold days!
23:52
hell yeah topher!
The front and rear end of the old BRZ (facelift/refresh) is much better than the new catfish BRZ front end. Also the old BRZ interior had a grab handle for your passenger for when you drive like a nut. Anyways, would it be crazy for me to trade in my GR86 for an upcoming CX-50 hybrid? Love the GR86 but it's getting difficult to live with in an area with harsh winters and loud interior after a long day at work. Of all the current crossovers, it seems to have the best handling
Is there a reason why you spend a moment with the shifter in neutral between gears?
Less of a beating to allow things to match speeds and settle down. Especially synchros
Has anyone tried swapping the front end from new to old gen
Of what you can remember, how does the power compare between your new one and old one with header and tune?
Peak power isn’t as big of a difference, though still there. torque difference is massive between the two
Cool vid, want to find and buy a 2015
How tall are you Topher.
Tried sitting in a 2023 BRZ at a car show and the size just and space disappointed me
5’10
lets go for a drag race ;)
i know the new one makes power but the first gen's high mpg rating was pretty nice, the new one isn't super fast anyways
Why does the new one look like a v6 accord from the back
You should pov drive a e92 335is dct!!!
Good dude!!!
21:55 The pause at the engine made me laugh for no reason at all
i love these cars, but for the price i would rather get a corvette c5 or c6, if you could find one, as in my area they're the THE SAME PRICE
2014 looks better than 2022 in design
Disappointed with the look of the rear end of the new gens. The first looks so much better with the license plate placement, taillights, and spoiler imo.
I know it’s the Midwest and not California, but reminder to lock your doors while driving hahahah
Modern cars lock automatically when you drive past a certain speed
@@maximus9401 idk, I own a 2023 BRZ and I don’t remember a time the door locked by itself at any speed. I have to manually lock the doors everytime I get in

@@TheTopher awesome thank you good sir
I want a hakone edition 86 with a header and tune!
But I can’t decide between that and a BMW 128i, or a 987 Cayman.
I genuinely was going to buy the 2nd gen but I thought the turn signal stalk would drive me crazy
First thing I noticed in the 2014...the CD player! Ah, nostalgia. The 2014 guy lamented the fate of stick shifts; I guess you could say the stick is going the way of the CD player :(
I’d be interested to see lap times between these 2 cars
Best motoring raced a stock GT86 with a supercharged GT86 auto and a GR86. The GR beat both.
Oh damn! I always thought that the trunk hole was the same! I thought that they filled the space that was used for the taillight corners with those stupid flat plastic peices. Now I hate them even more!
I like the new steering wheel...
23:55 Showin' off to the new kid xD
Make sure to change your clutch fluid Once in a while 👍🏼
Also I would say the new BRZ is way less forgiving at the limit.
god damn dude your brz is freakin quick! that header and diff really make that thing just pull and pull! u planning on tuning it?
edit: also yep, they are two different blues. Subaru changed the process for the world rally blue pearl on the 2017 and up cars, its a 3 stage paint instead of two stage, with much more of a purplish hue in indirect lighting conditions.
Removal of separate fog lights is the biggest mistake auto industry made. They make cars look so much better.
2014 brz premium automatic with paddle shifters is better.
