60,000 people in Oakland, Ca. on a hot summers day 1977, taking in one of the greatest bands ever. Back then it was all about the music for the performers and the audience. No elaborate stage show and playing during the day, there's no use for lighting. This is when you know you're seeing an amazing band- their songwriting and musical ability are all that's needed to keep you in awe.

The lead singer: "Make it pretty for Oakland"...instead of "Oakland, give it up for us", is a subtle window in to the mentality of artists from the 70s. These guys really cared about fans, and they were blown away by their fame, rather than expecting it.

That bird sound and the lead intro is played using something called a guitar slide. It's a simple Hollow tube about the size of the finger made of glass or some type of metal that fits on the finger and played much like a steel guitar

This particular concert was at the Oakland Coliseum, the series of concerts were called “Day on the Green “. It was an all day event with many bands. Mr Bill Graham would put on quite a few each year from the 1970’s through the mid 80’s I personally attended about 1/2 a dozen including Led Zeppelin as a goofy teenager.

I have never seen anyone listen to this song without a smile on their face....and isnt that the most important aspect of music? there is nothing more important than if the music moves you or not. Not the commercial budget, not the auto tune, not the glits or the glam. current "artists" can claim to sing from the heart but really they perform from the pocketbook.

Baby girl all their songs are like this one . Just pick one out of 50 songs. Just Choose one. How are they that skilled & good ? (They had tallent a bunch of it)Your looking & listening to the hardest working rowdyest partying rock band thats ever lived. No one practiced as much as them. No one played as many concerts in one tour or a years time. Then no one has this special style & sound they have. Van zant collins & rossington are responciable for their core sound. Especilly vanzant the singer. Its his band. He writes the words with a little help form band members. U will never see 3 top 100 guitar players on stage ever again in one band. I judge guitar playing by the sound their getting. Rossington & collins have the best sound in rock & roll history. Its very consistant & entertaining . It never gets old. Their sound is much longer lasting & appealing to multipul generations & types of people if given a chance. than any other band. I thank GOD ALL MIGHTY for this band. Their tallent comes from him.

Beautiful song, fabulous band, and amazing guitar skills. This was greatness. The guitarist was using something on his middle finger called a guitar slide to make the special sounds and the bird sounds. It was clear and hard to see, so it was probably made of glass. Guitar slides are commonly used by guitarists, but in all my years of listening to great guitarists, I never heard any if them make bird sounds. Very impressive and fascinating to watch. Thanks for this one.

The bird sounds are from playing the natural harmonics, on the guitar strings. Rather than pressing them fully down to the fret (metal bit on the wooden playing surface that in effect shortens the string distance), instead they just barely make finger contact with the string, but only at certain places (5th, 7th, 12th, 19th, frets, etc.) They sound pretty cool, and they are a showboat move in a lot of songs.
