- This is the 1963 documentary (narrated by Lillian Gish) of the Winchester Mystery House. It's fascinating to see it as it was in 1963, and Lillian's narration is great. Hope you enjoy!
Another CZcams user was kind enough to upload a version of this a couple years ago, and I found it fascinating. The only problem was the original source material was fairly washed out, and the full color network logo was extremely distracting. I made it black-and-white and increased the contrast to make it easier to see the material. It's still not great, but the content is so fascinating, historic, and spooky, it's still great viewing. If whoever posted the original wants to re-post this version, please just download and ping me and I'll take this one down. Just hoping to share this fascinating documentary.
By the way, if you can redirect this to a 3-D television, it really gives a much better sense of depth and interest. - Hudba

My family toured in 1965. We were told that soon after the earthquake Roosevelt came to see her, since the doors had jammed from the quake she yelled thru the door to go to the back !! It is said the President was so upset by being treated like a servant, being told to enter at the back, that he just turned around and left without speaking to the household at all . I remember the rooms were bare because the interior furnishings had been sold. Also, we were shown the elevator , said to be the first on west coast, and a very interesting shower which because of her pains was instead of the showers we know now with the head at the top, this one had an upside down U shaped fixture with holes for the water all the way around this odd "shower head" for her convenience, comfort and safety. How much of this is fact I couldn't say, but it was a fascinating story. Very much enjoyed, hope this isn't too long to read.

I was ten in 1965 when my mother took me to the old Winchester House. The story of the party she gave for the ghosts who haunted her in that grand ballroom had a tremendous effect on me then, and still reverbs now. I remember what a huge, beautiful, and eerie room it was.....and still is.
This was cool, black and white horror type documentary makes this a thing of beauty
When Ms. Gish said the empty house oppressed Mrs. Winchester, I realized then how she remedied her loneliness. Nothing like the noise and activity and the comings and going’s of workmen. Not to mention the excitement of planning and “opening” of new rooms/halls/etc. Add to that the mischievousness of flummoxing all those gossips!! LOL!
Sarah was a very clever lady her house was amazing she had some engineering marvels in that house for the time intercom systems walk in showers and ash pits so there would be no mess in the room where the fire was lit she was incredibly adaptive and willing to try new ideas

My Father when he was younger loved the Gish sisters! And The Winchester House is awesome! Very good documentary! I saw a few other documentaries on here in color of the house and there are gardens on the property they grew their own vegetables i believe if i am not wrong they had vineyards too! She grew her own veggies and did help to feed the poor in that area! She was a very good and warm hearted lady!
I have rheumatoid arthritis and i can sympathize with her making the steps smaller in heighth! I cant handle high steps either. Poor soul God Bless her and may she R.I.P.
My Great Grandmother was abandoned by her husband and left with 3 small children. Mrs. Winchester would hire her to make dresses and then the dresses were donated to charity. My Great Grandmother was too proud to take charity (as were most back then) but Mrs. Winchester was kind enough to not take away a person's pride and hired them to do work (she really did not need doing) and therefore earn the income she generously gave them.
Interesting.. nowadays if someone can’t handle stairs, they sell the house and buy a 1 story

A relative of mine has a son, who was when a child, toured the Winchester Mystery House with his mom & claimed to have seen the ghost of Mrs. Winchester who scolded him for running around & being boisterous & getting into mischief & not staying with the tour group. His mom saw the apparition & apologized to the spirit of Mrs. Winchester.
This is amazing seeing it like this. I mean just look at how beautiful it was back then and I'm really excited for the movie coming out on February 2nd and this being in black and white from 1963 makes it eerie watching it and I love the narration by Lillian Gish.
Justin Copple the movie sucks imo. Very little to it. Too many special effects not enough tension build up. Not made well. It was cool to see the house if that's the real one they used in the movie.

Why do I love this documentary more than any of the current ones , with color, that I've seen?
dagulshyneshard Because it’s lost in time with spooky narration and shadows.....The spirits were younger then, and you can feel them through very fibre of the film stock. Now there are parking lots and a diner on the corner. At the time of this film, the house was surrounded by rustling trees and mystery. (Plus you clearly have good taste)
It's that twilight zone known as the early-1960s -- when we were closest to the end of the world and, more or less, we knew it.
Growing up in San Jose in the 70s and 80s, my dad used to take me to the Winchester House many times on the weekend as something to do. I always enjoyed it. My dad always parked in the Winchester Century Theaters lot next door (saw all of the first three Star Wars movies there). I remember at that time when you entered the house for a tour, you went into a store that was themed as an old time general store. I remember the big barrels of candy and the creaking hardwood floors. You bought the tour tickets in the store and the tour began by going through a single door from the store into the house. I also remember the tour groups were always small and no waiting. Went there in the 2000s when I visited San Jose and disappointed to see it turned very corporate with a fancy store restaurant and millions of people waiting to tour.
I’ve lived in SJ my entire life and I still haven’t toured it and I’m 42 😆✨

And she had the money to do it. From the sales of the Winchester Repeating Rifle she was getting basically one thousand dollars a day.
I wish narrators these days had the eloquence that Miss Gish had. Love the black and white you transformed it into. I grew up watching the monster movies in black and white. This added to the creepyness. It brought back that feeling I had when I was younger. Kids these days will never really feel "that". Than you for posting.

Glad you enjoyed! It is a great house. I read they discovered a new attic room recently, and there is a legend that there is a stocked wine cellar that she had walled up after the 1906 earthquake, so still more discoveries possible.

@@americawalk1154 She loved "Wendy's" as well. Her favorite item was the Bacon and cheddar baked potato with extra sour cream. She also love the chili with extra onions and crackers. She went through the drive thru in her carriage at that time.

I toured the Winchester house BEFORE it was fixed up years & years ago. There was a guy in front of us & a guy behind us so no one could go off on there own.
The house is big now but it was bigger then. And I remember those guys that gave the tour really
looked scared. I remember the outside of the house was white then.
We saw the many unused beautiful stain glass windows. They let me play the pump organ in that fantastic ball room.
My wife and I toured the house about 4 years ago and it was really interesting. It would have been awesome to see it with the original property. It is in a very busy section of town now. We had a great time there and look forward to going on a ghost tour there soon.
I first toured the house in the 1970's. Back then the area was still very rural and undeveloped and it was the largest structure around for miles. I went again a few years ago and now the house looks dwarfed by all the urban development around it. I'm glad I got to see it back then when it was still surrounded by open space.

When my family lived there it looked pretty much like it did in this film. I was only 8 yrs old at the time. Around 8 yrs later, the overgrown trees were cut down and and the house was spruced up. My grandfather stopped being the live-in mgr and caretaker in 1972, then my older uncle took over as manager of it. In preparation of it being made a State Historical Landmark in America's 300ys anniversary, the house went through major refurbishment beginning in 1974 in order to be ready in 1976.

Oh my gosh, I may have been your tourguide! That was in the time period I worked as a tourguide there. My uncle knew of my love for the house and after I graduated from high school, he called my mother and asked if I wanted a job. It was the best profession, besides the ministry, that I ever had.

I'm guessing the workers that stayed with her stayed because it was steady work that paid well. No "mystery" there.

Mrs. winchester was indeed Intelligent and fascinating.. There were both evil And Good ghosts at her place and. she never kept large mirrors at her home in order to protect the good spirits and it is said there was also a special room where she communicated with the spirits of the home in order to draw plans for the construction. She made so many rooms and corridoors to confuse the evil spirits.And This Documentary was very good Nice Job! !

I love lillian telling the story about Winchester mystery House a true story .there has been others telling the story about Winchester mystery House but not as good as lillian.she puts more detail and her talking about the owner and going ons on the house is very well narrated by her.10/10 To lillian telling the story.👍
The music has a very "Dark Shadows" feel to it. lol I expected to hear Lillian to say "My name is Victoria Winter" at some point.

This documentary reminds me of the movie "The Haunting", which is also about a haunted house. Very interesting documentary. I'm looking forward to finally seeing the place this August.

This documentary is great. Shows the house in a dilapidated state. I am glad restoration efforts were made in the 1970s to reverse the ongoing decaying of the infamous Victorian mansion.

The great and lovely Lillian Gish, the inventor of modern acting through expression in silent movies, I find has a lovely classical American ladies voice! I would love to have met her, perhaps not though in this haunted house. Maybe Vincent Price would like it there!
This is the first time I've ever heard Lillian Gish's voice, I've seen a lot of her movies but they were all silent movies.
@Mike Peterson, her last movie role was in a 1987. She was in 42 talkies.
Miss Gish had a powerful role as a protector of lost children in 'Night Of The Hunter', directed by Charles Laughton, starring Robert Mitchum in his creepiest role.
IMHO it's a black & white masterpiece, filled with haunting scenes reminiscent of early German expressionist silent movies. It's not perfect as a whole, but it's pretty darn close to perfect and is certainly unforgettable.

They always show a documentary of this during Halloween time and I am definitely a fan!! Very interesting and creepy at the same time!!!
We preserve a 16mm positive film print of the original Ch.5 film and have just had it re-transferred with a progressive scan, at 2K resolution. The picture and sound quality will be much improved on this old transfer. But we'll still need to post online with the station's watermark bug (I can make it b&w), to honor our agreement with the copyright holder. Should be made live from our DIVA website at SF State in the next week.

I LOVE the music and the B&W filming. Gives a very "Twilight Zone" feel to it- creepier since it's not a TV show, it is REAL. I feel so sorry for Mrs. Winchester- her fake friends, instead of doing something positive like getting her to a member of the clergy for counseling for her grief, hired a witch to mislead her and push her over the edge. the house is so creepy, I hear, that Stephen King was so unnerved by a visit that he wrote a book based on the house.

Thanks for the upload, I highly recommend the tour. My son and i were there last Xmas amazing house, Sarah had a great idea with the little stairs I had serious spine damage when I was there which meant stairs are normally a nightmare, those stairs were so easy to walk up....

I grew up with the stories of Mrs. Winchester. We never heard about the kooky belief in the spirits of those who had been killed by the riffles needing rooms to house them. We did know about her involvement and obsession with the occult. SMH

Oh, I'd pay real money for that. It'd be sweet if someone made it for VR. The closest thing _I've_ ever seen to a computer/video game level comparable to the Winchester house was _Thief: The Dark Project_ (1998). The name of the level was The Sword.

There is a easter egg to the Winchester Mystery House in the Nuka World DLC in Fallout 4.
If I had the full house plans, would be easy to build the house with Sketchup or similar. I've done hundreds of victorian houses in the past. They are fun to build, with all those peculiar and beautiful interiors. Then would be easy to export the model(s) to your favorite game engine.

Did the tour in the ‘80s. Between the hot temps (no air conditioning), and crowded small spaces, I almost fainted. I didn’t finish the tour. Don’t go in the summer.

The story is great and explains a lot, some of which is in the tour, some is in the movie, Winchester. The only thing that sucks is the high contrast of the film, so many images of the house cannot be seen, but that's copies of old film for ya. A great treasure! Thanks for uploading!
This is so tragic. Jelious neigbours. Not having her name on the donations. She was sweet, heartbroken, sad, lost, and generous. I wish there was made a movie about just how she were. From the early years of her life , to the end when she died. I feel of she died of sadness and the loos of her husband and baby. I feel like a Stephen King "Rose Red" vibe, because of her continuing building like the lady in Rose Red did too after her husbands death. Maybe King got some inspiration from Sarahs house.

I love Lilian Gish. The narration is faboulous, and also the story. Only I think, contrary to what is said in the documentary, in those days and since all War World I at least, Spiritism was very fashinable in rich houses. Conan Doyle, Houdini and many others had different perspectives on the fashion of calling the spirits of the loved ones dead.

I truly love watching this documentary about the Winchester House. October is just about over with and I'm surprised they haven't played the documentary of the Winchester house yet. Anyway a lot of people ask me if this is true and I have to say yeah it is. On February 2nd 2018 the Winchesters movie is coming out. Heck freaking yeah they made us into the movie & yes I am going to see it. It's really is about time that they made us into a movie. Yes I'm hyped up & all excited I cannot wait until this movie comes out to the theaters. Also I do enjoy and love watching the documentary for this + the History Channel or the Travel Channel or whatever chimney want to call it needs to hurry up and play this documentary before Halloween is over. This would be the perfect time of year to play this documentary history of the Winchester House. Who knows maybe they did play it and I missed it I hope not.

Folks take the tour of the home. It was well worth the entry fee. I have been amazed by this home since I was a child. I will say this, the home did not impress upon me that it was haunted or bad in any way, it’s a grand old home with a very unique flair. Sarah Winchester had the means and the creative mind to build a wonderful place for the future to share. If you go you will enjoy it, also the gardens surrounding the home are beautiful. Enjoy!

I grew up near here in the 60s 70s and had been in the house several times so of course, heard all the stories. I had a boyfriend whose great aunt knew Mrs Winchester. She took piano lessons from her and said she was a perfectly lovely lady. Nothing strange about her. During the earthquake the whole top floor crashed to the ground and all the doors, windows and stairways that lead to nowhere were simply patch jobs from the earthquake. No mystery just a lot of money to spend!

The place hasn’t changed structurally since she passed away in 1922. The is doc was made in 1963. Before the 1906 quake this thing was seven stories. You can imagine how odd it was to see by all the town folks. 😆
