    In 1987 my parents bought me the Atari 2600 Jr. (Remember the commercial: "The fun is back!...Under fifty bucks?!") They made that move because it was cheaper than a NES, but soon realized the limitations, as they inevitably bought a NES within a year.
    The Amico has serious limitations without the cheaper price point, so...What's the point?

    • @TheCommanderTaco
      @TheCommanderTaco Před 4 lety +5

      I would say this targets people ( mainly clueless parents who blame everything but their bad parenting) who just want to leave their kids alone and not pay attention to them, or people who think ( and don't look) local coop games are dead.
      Upon thinking about this the funny thing now is couch coop with friends is not really something to be done with " Social Distancing" needed to be implemented lol.
      I would give the Amico a pass if it was a simple plug and play between $60 - $80 with 10 - 20 games built in. The games we have seen so far look like cheap mobile games, and Tommy refuses to show any actual marketing and keeps stating the actual show will come later. It's sad we know more about the PS5 and Xbox series when he announced the Amico way before Sony and Microsoft. Tommy I guess has never heard the saying " let the product speak for itself".
      I saw an article recently that talked about the battery pack for Xbox, and the comments were arguing about PS vs Xb controllers. That is already more marketing and being talked about then the Amico lol.

    I'm in my early 40s, grew up playing Intellivision and I loved it. I have been all for the Amico since it started, but when it started I thought it was going to be more of a faithful kinda "Intellivision Mini" as it were, and play the classic games plus new versions of those classic games. I'm still all for that, but I don't really care about this other stuff, and certainly don't care for an increasing price point. That's coming from someone who would be most interested this system. All I really want is a reliable, affordable console that will play the classic Intellivision games on modern TVs, with wireless controllers. I thought the idea of the controller was great and really worked for that since you'd no longer need overlays, and I still think that. Its just now they're trying to sell it as something else, and I don't like that.

    • @CaptainRufus
      @CaptainRufus Před 4 lety +5

      That's the only people who are remotely interested in this thing. The retro crowd. Trying to aim at families as well? Sure but the price point kills that bit and the only name recognition is with late Boomers and early Gen Xers. Nobody born after 78 or so knows or cares about Intellivision.

    But, I have ZERO interest in the Amico.

    It's so weird to hear Amico white knights scream "IT'S NOTHING LIKE THE OUYA!" yet they are more alike than they are different. The Ouya controller also had a touch pad and was used as a quick way for Android apps to be ported that heavily relied on a touchscreen interface. And this is also an Android-based platform, it's just locked down like Amazon Fire TV or the Ouya (which also had a "carefully curated" store). Both allowed for relatively easy side-loading. Given the only unique feature is the E10 or below requirement for all titles, I honestly think their only market is some place like Hobby Lobby or wherever they used to sell those "Clear Play" DVD players that would proactively edit out all the "naughty bits" from movies or spit out the disc if the player didn't recognize the movie from its online database. They may get a few parents who don't trust the technology of the big three consoles (or Apple TV or Amazon TV or Android TV) or inexplicably can't follow the startup tutorial which forces new owners to select the content filter settings (at least that's the case on the Xbox, I don't remember the PS4) before you can play your first game.

    You know what's the sad thing?
    If these *Titans of Industry* used their ip's honestly and upfront, just putting a custom retro case on an existing Android box and saying "This is an Android box with some aftermarket control pads, but it looks nice and very useful for you to play roms and free games as well as smarten up your TV," they would probably sell very well and have good support from consumers. Are you really telling me that Target or Walmart wouldn't have a glossy Atari tv box all over their store ads?

    Real parenting experience here:
    My son wanted a Switch starting several years ago. I was apprehensive about giving a young boy such an expensive piece of hardware to walk around with. I brought retro games into the house, noting that many of the switch games were replicated in my N64 collection. He had access to an OG Xbox at one point. I bought him a Nintendo 2DS because I got it super cheap, and although that was closer to a switch than anything else I’d gotten for him, he still wanted the Nintendo Switch.
    Branding is important to kids. I think it’s dumb but his peers didn’t understand why we would want stuff like the N64 with it’s bad graphics.
    The analysis of parents just buying the Switch instead of the Amico is absolutely the most likely outcome. The Amico kids would be likely to cry.

    I don't always agree with you on stuff...whether it be the Diablo thing or so forth in the past. But I gotta admit, you guys have made sense & a lot of good points on this whole Intellivision/Amico thing. It does seem like some of the pre-orders have sold well (the founders edition or whatever the hell it was called), so I do think there is a market for this. But it's a niche market of collectors. Folks who want to add this to their big collection of systems, have fun for a month or two for novelty and then after 1 or 2 months it gets buried under the rubble until the 'next new gimmick' arrives. And you're right...moms and kids are not going to give much of a shit about this when they have Steam on the internet to play games on let alone PS5/PS4/X-Box/etc.

I'm like Santa brought the wrong one i wanted the super nes. mommy said i think that's all Santa could find or something like that that's been like 28 years ago. i was disappointed cause i wouldn't be able to bring new games over or borrow my friends.sadly i didn't keep the boxes x.x but found a nice one on eBay recently and paid $25 for it. i gave it a little bit of time and i would find nes games at garage sales. i even found rob at a garage sale. i don't think it was complete and was a stand alone one. sadly over the years pieces became missing. but to this day i thank my momma for buying that nes for me for starting my video game journey. i still have that nes. hugs and love :D

But I am particularly pleased to hear Ian discussing a certain particular CZcamsr / supposed "games pundit," and not pulling back any punches in doing so.
    Bless you for being willing to take the flak in facing off against that particular character, and I hope y'all know that there are those of us who appreciate it as more than just "drama" or whatever other folk are gonna want to call it: What you're truly doing is putting a magnifying glass to the clear and problematic bias exhibited by said individual, as well as taking their complete lack of self-awareness to task.
    I know I'm dancing around naming them explicitly here (for fear of folk searching for his name in the comments to blindly defend him); but they've always been a figure I've considered detrimental to the scene / games community as a whole, and I only wish that their fans might one day be able to open their eyes to how they have been lead along and far astray by his commentary over the years. Hopefully, Ian's impassioned description is one more step toward that future.

Well it doesn't matter because all five people now have it!" followed by a bunch of minute-long "trailers" for the pack-in games. But even if Tommy is well-intentioned, and even if this was a good idea on paper, this is never going to find success. Kids grow up playing better looking and more complex games on their PS4 and Xbox One. Fortnite is a much more complex game, yet the kiddies love it. I don't see why people think simple and cartoony = kid-friendly. Kids will play whatever is popular, be it complex or simple. Kid-friendly or not. And tacking on a license that even the parents of young children don't know and never grew up with is stupid.
