    I'm sorry to say that I didn't get it.
    I'm new to Buber and read a bit and watched some videos.
    I hope someone could explain it to me like I'm a ten year old.
    I firmly believe that anything important can be written on the back of a business card. E=mc2 /Species change over millions of years because of predator or environment and mutation/ our universe began when an unstable quantum particle exploded/ Martin Buber's great idea was that...........

      "Although we usually treat each other like objects, we can also treat each other like the luminous, sacred beings we actually are." I think that would fit on a business card, especially if you wrote it in relatively small letters. Thanks for the interesting challenge. Eric D.

      From how I see it short terms:
      I-thou : To see the entirety of an individual as precious and important
      I-It : To only see the convenience and objective benefits of an individual
      In terms of like romantic relationships you can say that I-thou makes two couple love each other for all of their existance and humanity while I-it only see the surface and and direct benefit of being with this person like sexual pleasure, financial gains, society standards, or the fear of being alone.
      Please correct me if I'm wrong though if someone could add.

      You are a victim of your culture, little guy. A haiku can be written on the back of a business card and so can the phone number of a girl you meet at a party, but nothing else of any worth. Start using your lazy little brain. You have to work to learn the verbal system of any language including your own. Buber has to be read and digested and talked about with a qualified instructor.

    This is my favorite from the I Thou book:
    love does not cling to an I, as if the You were merely its “content” or object; it is between I and You. Whoever does not know this, know this with his being, does not know love, even if he should ascribe to it the feelings that he lives through, experiences, enjoys, and expresses. Love is a cosmic force.

    Nice summary. I think of Buber as a deeply contradictory thinker, because most of his insights come from deep intimacy in my opinion, but a lot of his language is rather abstract as well. I just read a good biography on him by Paul Mendenes-Flohr called _Martin Buber: A Life of Faith and DIssent_ that explains reasons in his life why he became who he became that really is much better of an insight than some of his books. _I-Thou_ is my favorite, because it requires multiple slow readings to even get close to it. Living it helps you better than reading about it most of the time for me.

      Well, I'm glad that this video helped you appreciate _I and Thou_ a little more. I can easily understand how that book might seem incomprehensible, especially at first. That's especially true because it's written in a fairly poetic, evocative, almost oracular way -- rather than in a straightforward, declarative way. But once you get past that, things get a lot easier. Anyhow, thanks for watching & commenting. Gratitude. Eric D.

      Thanks, Rachim, for taking the time to watch and comment. Yeah, courage (etymologically, a quality of the heart) seems to be one in the biggest variables in the I-Thou equation. I think that moments when we find that kind of courage -- when we manage to make genuine connection with our fellow travelers -- tend to be cumulative. In other words, having moments like the one you're describing tend to produce more of those kinds of moments over time. It's almost as if the I-Thou is a kind of ability that we can cultivate throughout our lives. Anyhow, thanks again for the response. Eric

    7:14 "Similarly, attitudes toward God that stray out of relation into an overly externalized such as "God is All," or an overly internalized form such as "God is within me" similarly miss the mark, as Buber puts it, "You need God in order to be, and God needs you for that which is the meaning of your life."
    It is this idea of relationship that has disappeared from both religion and philosophy. It is the Other in the relationship, NOT the "I" in which Buber seeks the divine. It is in one's neighbor, not in one's self identification that Buber tells us the opportunity for transcendence becomes manifest. This video is right on the mark.

    very useful introduction, thankyou. May I suggest you invest in a popshield (or pair of tights stretched over a bent coathanger) when recording any more of these great 'in ten minutes'? Labially, Buber is probably the most speaker-cone busting thinker whose thoughts you so expertly crystallise, but lovely sentences like "paradigm of a powerful and compelling narrative... perhaps" are also a bit punishing on the eardrums. Alternatively, a quick analysis found quite a ot of energy under 165Hz that could be cut without your smooth tones suffering. yours, a sound nerd with headphones on.

    can you give some examples of I Thou?

    • @ericdodson2644
      @ericdodson2644  Před 9 lety +3

      Well, it's hard to give specific definitive examples of I-Thou moments because the I-Thou is defined more by HOW we engage each other -- the spirit with which we do that -- rather than in overtly observable activities or behaviors. However, perhaps the experience of deep love or intimacy would be, at least for some people, a kind of example (of course, for other people, "love" is really about just getting what you want from someone else.... a kind of manipulation). On the other hand, the I-Thou can take place at any point and in anything we're doing. So, in that regard, anything at all could be a possible example of the I-Thou (even writing this response to you). It all depends upon how we're living it -- either in the spirit of relation and reciprocity, or in that of distance and manipulation. Hope this helps, or at least makes things more interestingly confusing. Eric

    • @boliussa
      @boliussa Před 9 lety

      Eric Dodson ok, enjoying or experiencing somebody's presencing would be "I thou", though I think my daft interlocutor was trying to rail against the "I it".

      +Eric Dodson Does it differ at all from in-itself and for-itself?

    • @ericdodson2644
      @ericdodson2644  Před 8 lety

      +The Shaolin Yeah. Sartre's for-itself/in-itself idea is a phenomenological theory of how consciousness operates in general, whereas Buber's I-it/I-Thou distinction is about how there are two primary ways whereby that can happen. In more detail.... the for-itself/in-itself distinction is a way of explaining the intentionality and referentiality of consciousness -- the active process by which the for-itself refers to the in-itself, primarily by way of nihilation (i.e., no-thing-ness), which is ultimately what allows us to make distinctions in our conscious awareness of things. However, for Buber, there are two primary ways of doing all of that: Either by way of an I-it (i.e., objectifying) posture, or an I-Thou (i.e., mutual) posture.

      Well, by their very nature brief introductions tend to be somewhat superficial & light, rather than comprehensive & weighty. However, it might be that you've outgrown the need for that type of treatment. That's fine; probably this video series isn't for you. On the other hand, as you yourself are indicating, there's a time in life when it's just the right thing. I'm pretty much making these videos for people who are in that phase of life -- people who would benefit from having a little taste of something before committing to a 5-course meal.

      I know. I didn't want to discourage you. also, I used the word "superficial" in my comment above, but I didn't mean, you are looking on Martin Buber superficially. I meant, it is a little odd or feels funny for me, looking superficially on the different views on time as a youngster and as a more mature person. the view on time and what is seen as boring or interesting. of course there is a logic. it does make sense that a young person is sometimes more restless and so on. but just to say (like I do) this is too short for me, I would like to 'invest' time for this, when usually I am rather shocked how little time I have. now the next 20 years seem to be so close. just the next episode. with 18 that seemed to be so far away... I am not sure, if this is more confusing than clarifying. but you keep on doing these videos. I would have appreciated this very much as student esp. as undergraduate.

    I genuinely cannot think of a single person who lives in I-Thou. So I am doubtful that it can even be considered a real concept. Seems more like grasping at the unattainable.

    I don't really understand his argument that we are becoming more reliant on the I-it, historically I think the I-it has always been more prevalent than the I-thou, Slavery was the best example of the I-it taken to its extreme, class and caste systems dominated much of society pre the 20th century.

      We are not becoming more RELIANT.
      We are becoming ADDICTIVE DEPENDENT, very, very different.

    On the issue of an I-Thou relationship with God: could it be argued that the human construction of an objective God is actually an I-It relationship that is, at its heart, an avoidance of an I-Thou relationship with what is actually reality?
