I travelled to the city of Usti Nad Labem as I have heard it is a poorer town in the Czech Republic. I wanted to see if there are noticeable difference between this city versus Prague or any other typical cities in the Czech Republic. As to my surprise, the majority of this city is more or less normal, but there were definitely "bad" parts of the city which really opened my eyes to a whole different set of reality for some unfortunate people. Watch me exploring some very harsh conditions in this country.

Every country in Europe (apart from Scandinavia) have poor areas. You should see suburbs of Napoli. It's no different than Usti, maybe even worse.
big facts!
Yeah it's true unfortunately but Sweden has bad areas as well... Not sure about Norway, Iceland, or Finland probably none. Switzerland, Luxemburg, and the three tiny countries don't have any for sure.
@@MissSladousek Japan has extremely few but not zero. Right here in Osaka too!
Iceland has one horrible area called breiðholt. It’s basically the gang area of iceland and it’s poor af. Spray paint everywhere and many abandoned places...it gives the soviet era type vibes. I once went there and ended up getting chased by a man with a knife since i looked rich because I’m from reykjavík
@natalie storm You havent been to Essen or Dortmund then :DD
Next stop: chanov?
Wow, salty comments of my countrymen here :D
I personally like this way of tourism - there's more to Czech Republic than Prague and other touristy cities, both in good and bad. It also needs the courage just to visit the unknown in a totaly foreign country.
When you're at places like these, I advise you to enjoy them, especialy old industrial complexes. Most of them were just left to decay and soon will be gone forever, because nobody sees their architectural value and beauty (unlike hotels, theaters etc.). Until then, enjoy the athmosphere of stillness and decay, for there's something darkly poetic to it.
Miriam Obršlíková thanks for wise words 😝 that’s exactly what we did went to some abandoned factory complexes and did some “urban exploring”. Like you said there are more than just the traditional castles and beautiful architectures. Looking forward to see it again 🤙🏼
I think it's important to see the bad sides and the bad parts of any country you visit just as much a to see the good parts. Especially if you want to or are already living there. There are many reasons why some neighbourhoods end up looking like that but it shouldn't be a taboo to point them out. It is part of the society in our country and it is part of the every day life.
Thank you, I couldn't agree with you more :)
Ondřej Matějka glad of no apparent censoring
Well, according to european statistical data , poverty level among EU27 countries is the lowest in Czech Republic only 9 % and remaining stable even trough recession times over past years , every country has poor areas

Ustí is my beautiful city. That part what u was visited is devasteted from people who living there. They want live like this, they don´t want have any job any responsibility. Actualy these streets u was, was one of most beautiful streets from whole city even 30 years back. And this people ( mostly gypsies but not only) destroyed it. And it happened many times in Ústí. If u will come again and u want know about history of this city and about these integrations problems just text i can invite u for a coffe or beer in my bar and i cat tell u more. Anyway u doing a good videos about our country ( sometimes i wanna kick u for things like ,,eastern Europe ´´ but mostly good and fun :)
Thanks for the kind comment man! Apologies, I'm just teasing with my "Eastern Europe" :D For sure, if I would come again will remember this, cheers!
@@cokeboypeking9597 Well it is eastern EU that's for sure. Doesnt matter. The only thing that matters is GDP growth, economically speaking. The rest follows.
@Martina Kuhnert Not everyone has time to learn english. He just wanted to share his opinion, so stop being an ass.
@@user-pd6bd7ir4z it is not eastern europe. It's central europe or western europe. We were part of eastern europe over 30 years due to communism era. Europe was divided to western and eastern for 30 years by The Berlin wall. However, we were hundreds of years part of western Europe before communism. So you are calling us eastern europe is absolutely irrelevant since 30 years is absolutely nothing in history. Btw by your logic Austria is also in Eastern europe. If you want to look at it ecomically, you say "post-communist countries" or whatever but not fucking eastern europe.
@@user-pd6bd7ir4z Btw when you talking about statistics did you know that Czech Republic has the same HDI as France, both 25th place (which is probably the most respected life quality indicator in the world) and it has surpassed Spain and Italy in GDP per capita and is predicted to surpass Japan and New Zealand in GDP per capita until 2025?
'high crime area' is very incorrect description.... the problem was lifestyle and 'culture' of the community that lived there. If you do not mention this aspect and instead mention misleading term 'high crime area'- then you are just omitting key information. ('high crime' in the sense used -say-in the US was never a real problem there)
Wow. As a resident of Ústí, I must say, you two are very brave about visiting this area. I woudn't go the even if someone offers me a milion dollars.
In 7:53 you said that you feel bad for those people living there. Well.. it's their problem. Some time ago, Předlice used to be a normal city district with normal people, and it was a good place to live. But the, gypsyes came and here you can see the result. I don't feel bad for them at all. With honorable exceptions, people like they are ruining our city.
People lives in Ústí are in a bad mood in general. And if we dont change the mind of our residents, Ústí don't have any chance to thrive.
MrVeseliD not All of Ústí is ugly..
Its safer than in center of Rio de Janeiro. They robbed me in Rio, never in Predlice :-)

@@cokeboypeking9597 In Prague explore where homeless people live... There used to be a secret place right under the Letná Park, kind of under neath the steps from the beer garden. And many other. Slovakia has some hardcore bad gypsy places... Not sure how safe it would be to explore though. France and Italy have bad neighbourhoods too but some of those I would probably avoid altogether. Romania comes to my mind as well.
Raspberry Biscuit damn, my gf lives in Prague, unrelated but yea.
Letná park is totally ok. I even slept there on the grass after concert :D it's the nicest and cleanest homeless place ever :D
@@cokeboypeking9597 Yeah I from Prague, I had no idea that places like this even existed in Czechia, though I used to hear rumours. I wonder why the local gov't hasnt torn down this entire street, section of the city. That's crazy. Looking like South Africa or Detroit. Shameful.
You should definitely come one more time for the "good part" of Ustí,which could not be that obvious for the first glance. That was for me ( apart from the neverending hills) around mostly the people and their cultural effort and its results. There is a lot happening around the local great art faculty, "culture House" (called Hraničář) and theatre community. Lot of inspiring events and places to see :)
I actually never knew about that part. Yes , Ústí nad Labem is my hometown. It's sadly ugly in some parts , Because it was attacked years ago. I got kinda used to living there, In a family house , In a quiet part of the city. I know, I'm late , but good video. 💛

Yes there are a decent population of Roma gypsies living in this city sprawled out in this city. Was my first time seeing this in Czech after 4 years living here.

COKEBOYPEKING You witnessed only a mere spark of the bad neighbourhoods in Czech people say that the Roma people are causing this but every white Czech person will tell you to avoid the Roma and they are like cancer its because of the racism these poor people are living like this. Why you ask because if your a gypsy you cant get a decent job cause they look stare and discourage you and simply find some excuse to remove you its a big problem.
Try Plzeň or Karlovy Vary next, both are decently large cities with many historic/cultural sites and try to narrate one video in czech exclusively it would be interesting to hear you speak in language other then english.
And quick question more important than life: what is your favorite czech beer?? :D
Awesome video thanks!
Same like if you wonder why people in the US live in the big homeless communities for example in L.A. . That is when American dream goes wrong. We can be happy that we have this only in small percantage in the Czech republic.
Stop comparing bad with worse. Compare bad with better.
agree, and USA does not provide healthcare and has far higher crime, and I live in one of the safest and more costly states...very sad and shameful to see, I feel badly for seniors and poor who are hardworking but struggle
Have you been to Plzeň? It beatiful city with lots of history and LOTS of festival and celebrations. Some vine festival is in March, then Freedom celebration , Metal Fest, Light festival Blik Blik (light instalatioins in city, not as big as in Praha). I come from smaller town called Žatec - mored than a 1000y old, producer of the best hops for beer :D, but notz so much work possibilities. I felt in love with Pzeň and I think it'S worth visiting.... Also just about 1.5 hour long travel from Praha :)
What do you do for a living?
where have you been to, chánov?
these buildings are mostly abandoned though. yeah, i ve heard of these enclaves. It's hard to believe that they exist in the Czech republic.

You can see it must have once been lovely,?
Hay; have you ever been to Olomouc? You deffinitely should come visit :D
You should've gone to see Chánov, but you probably wouldn't return in one piece.
In surveys czechia consistently ranks high in 'safest countries' category i.e top 10.
This is quite interesting. As someone from South America I’ve been told my whole life that places like that doesn’t exist in Europe, that happens only here. I guess is not like that.
I’m from Argentina, here in Buenos Aires everybody has european surnames.
I guess everywhere in the world theres poor people but the media kinda makes you forget about that. Here we don't depend so much of US but because of corruption the economy is always sinking.
Places like this are pretty rare and are mostly inhabitted by gypsy communities whose culture and way of living is very different from ethnical Czechs. Politicians have been trying to solve this for years, but it's difficult to get their children go into school etc. At the same time, you have to respect their culture, family rights etc. So for example removing parenting rights is always seen as the last option in the Czech Republic. But this also means that the next generation will just end up living the same way. It's a big problem and there's no easy solution. So the places like this basically exist because human rights are respected (which is obviously a good thing). It's also worth noting most (if not all) of these people collect social benefits which would allow them to live in significantly better conditions, but they often lack even the most basic financial literacy. They tend to spend money as soon as they get them and then have troubles paying monthly bills, so they get their gas or water disconnected (as you saw in the video) etc. There's really no reason for someone to throw garbage out of their windows. There are public thrash cans, for god sake. But why bother putting garbage in the garbage bag and then walk for a few minutes when you can just throw it out of the window, right?
Well Europe is quite a broad expression. While you won't really see this in Scandinavia, Switzerland and probably Austria it definitely happens in all west and central European countries. On the other hand it is rather rare and here in Czech Republic these are almost exclusively gipsy communities and that’s a topic for much longer discussion. On the other hand if you go more east it won't by that rare anymore.
Welcome to usti

There are two different chemical factories. One is producing ammonia and the second is for various products such as soup, vegetable oil or tooth paste and so on.

Come to Hungary, and look around there! :D
Jobs In the factory and office are almost same salary as Prague. Can be little gap from service job...Those are not Czech people. They are Romans and they used to live in Europe from 16th century. Some of them are homeless.

You have to understand that you doesn’t regard that people don’t live in such conditions. These unfortunate people that you saw actually are probably just Roma. If you want to see true poverty, go to Moldova.
hit me up next time you wanna visit ústí ill show you other parts of the town
Hey want some good tea wisit Karlovy Vary and nice video
I was looking for a town in Czech that translates to the word Joy? Help your boy out.
Kladno means "positivity."
There's a village (or more precisely a hamlet) called "Šukačka" which literally translates to a vulgar expression for sexual intercourse (the F word).
it looks disadvantaged but my understanding is that there is far less crime in Czech than in even 'the wealthiest nation' USA if you go to the poor inner city areas and our crime and violence rates are far higher, widespread guns and drugs.
Well he hand-picked some of the worst places to be found in the entire country. Most of these buildings are abandoned anyway and it definitely does not represent the entire country, these areas are very likely Roma slums which they themselves created.
Though, to be fair, Northern Bohemia is a pretty bad area to live in and it's lagging behind due to some historical events. And yes, violent crime is pretty much unheard of, even in places like this, the worst that could happen is some Roma mugged you.
There is far less crime in the Czech Republic than pretty much anywhere. It's one of the safest countries in the world.
Ok, I have been in Usti hundreds times and there is absolutely no beautiful part in Usti 😀

Most of those buildings were made illegaly and all of that places have one thing in common: majority of gypsies (90 % +). It is a long overlooked problem (by local and central government alike). That is the problem that deserves some kind of a final solution… (ehm; i know, i know, bad words…) But I don't know what solution - usually when you think about some, someone will call you racist*. IMHO the problem are the parents - never had a job in their lifetime, quite often iliterate, don't value education, often addictied to alcohol or drugs in general… What can kids learn from them? That they don't have to do anything and the social system will provide? There definitely are insufficient capacities to take children away from their parents and raise them elsewhere (foster parents? boarding schools?). No need to mention, that it's very unpopular and controversial measure. So yeah, there is a big problem and a strong urge to solve it somehow. But nobody knows how. And that's why people offering simple solutions are that much popular.
* Like that was that much different with some minorities in US and I don't know how much has that problem spread into Canada.
We joke about Ústí like other people joke about Ohio

I can call gypsy gypsy etc....officialy that people in that ghettos are "non-adaptable citizens" :-D But I don't know any gypsy who has problem with word gypsy, I noticed they prefer word cigán with G instead of cikán which is maybe more offensive for them. I think that word "romové" is created by some non-profit organization for human rights or something like that. I don't think they really using that name for calling themselves.
Lots of people from areas like this went actually to Canada when they heard about their great benefit system, hoping for better life without job. In the end Canadians kicked them back to Czech and now Czech citizens need a visa to Canada. Why they didn't help these poor people overseas, who knows? Kicking them back into a poverty and just to be shore lock the door behind them?

Yea it’s bad how the town looks like but of course theres much racism comments not surprise. But let’s me explain it :) i dont live there but they’re just gypsies “cigany” it’s true they don’t work etc. But don’t be surprise with all the racism where they go then they don’t have much choice to join to work. And the others Roma “olassky romove” is really dofferent.. They don’t live like this, they’re not agresive or like everything ppl thinks.. it’s sad how czech ppl is racist to people who is not “white” or who didn’t born to czech republic :-) but everyone gypsies or roma is not the same.
What is racist about pointing out that this specific neighborhood was destroyed and made uninhabitable by people sharing certain culture/lifestyle.
The culture/lifestyle of big part of this community is the cause of problems like this. People just see and make conclusions- if they see neighborhood made uninhabitable by certain group of people and this repeats over and over again in different parts of the country, people make conclusions. You can call it 'racism', you can call it 'experience', but the fact is neighborhoods like this is allways 'product' of specific gorup of people sharing specific culture/lifestyle
letecmig all wrong. Yes, Romas do have many problems with their culture but the main culprit is the system. Systemic racism in the Czech republic. How is it possible that some of these Romas who have moved to the UK (btw, about 50% of Czech passport holders in england are ethnic Romani) for instance have simply started living a normal life which they couldnt in Czech? How come they dont destroy property in England and steal (some maybe but not much overall). It’s sooooo easy to point fingers in one direction and to have simple amswers to everything. Will the Czechs EVER evolve beyond this? I really hope so
Many ethnic groups who came to America due to starvation, survival, persecution, poverty, etc, experienced horrendous prejudices & open discrimination, and yet they persevered and strengthened themselves as a people, began proving themselves as valuable contributers to society and graciously worked hard to build the best nation the world had ever seen!!!! This included learning English and adapting, being grateful, following law & order, respecting the new homeland & it's culture, working to better themselves & ultimately benefitting their surroundings through their work & paying taxes. Your mentality seems stunted, and dangerously excusing of a certain ethnic group, that they can't and shouldn't be blamed for they are of a particular people, this is no more a healthy outlook to society but to a detriment to the very group your claiming are victims. Stop seeing them as victims and start applying the same, equal standards as everyone. They can begin to prove their worth and set example, get jobs and actually use that as opportunity to start turning the negative reputation around, same as in America. If they're denied a job and likely based on these "racist" accusations you make, I am sure Europe has discrimination policy/process for which a complaint or formal grievance can be filed, and although that won't get the person liked, these people must fight for a chance and prove what they're capable of being "outsiders" or non-ethnic minority sad but true and if they don't stand up to the negative position they're in or do anything to change society or transform people's views in all the years they've been in Europe and have equal right to opportunity, then they can only blame themselves. Society isn't going to respect people who aren't doing things worthy of respect. America itself, proves your "racism" excuse as just that, a harmful & debilitating excuse with zero merit that only hurts the minority you choose to victimise. If the African American lady's who worked for NASA had your mentality that they're minority's with no worth & good for nothing except leeching off welfare & breeding crime, then America's space program would never have succeeded or accomplished what it did. Every group has to get past the discrimination & hatred and perhaps Roma are not adaptable or interested in assimilating considering the time they've had, or criminal thuggery /deviance /theft, are just the lazy route & easy choice but if they want better for their people and families, they have to unite and start somewhere and that likely is proving themselves through being hard, reliable workers & respectful citizens, with time attitudes will be more accepting and the resentment /hatred will change. You can't say people go around hating without any kind of basis behind it, give people more credit!!!! It's unfortunately up to the minority group to change and society follows. I would implement forced changes and criminal behavior would see them deported to their ethnic origins, no room in society for such nonsense, race is irrelevant. If it's ethnic natives committing crimes, they would be harshly & severely punished accordingly and locked away. Your racial cry is not conducive to anything positive & only serves the liberal agenda that's desperate to remain influential to society when race is not a problem except to the left who make it so by emphasizing it & using to exploit. Allow people to help themselves, not make excuses because they're a certain "race" they can't do anything as if they should be treated like helpless babies.
Very bad camera handling
