LiebeAlle I sang this song for my schools production of Miscast and regretted it in rehearsals. Ridiculously hard to sing and very fast, also, not at all meant for a guy to sing.
She is magnificent. what a great performance she gave. Her facial expressions are also perfect in this version. The best thing about theater version that I love so much is the live feedback from audience
I keep replaying this over and over again. It's musical performance at its best. Patti's every move, every expression is incredibly thought-through. Not to mention the comedy of it and of course her unbeatable vibratto to top it all off
I love at 2:15 when she sings "a woman alone" and flirts with him, looking him up and down. And, of course, that is her motivation. She is looking for a man, while all he can see is revenge.
I love how different Patti LuPone's Mrs Lovett's character has been in different productions. This version is definitely less menacing than others, for sure
This is the best performance of this song... ever. Angela was gasping air at every part and Helena couldn't do that live and lacks the technic to sing it the operatic way. Patti simply mastered it, hands down
13 people are not actors. Patti Lupone did a phenomenal job at this performance, I was there, and it was awe inspiring. As an Actor, its not about "liking" or "disliking" someone. Its not about who's better. Its about the role they take on, and appreciating that everyone does it differently .
This is the first time I've seen LuPone perform this number, I must say, it was hilarious! It was refreshing to see a new take on that character, of course I adore Lansbury (not so big on Helena anymore), but I think she really captured this role. Mrs. Lovett shouldn't sound very pretty, she's a poor pie merchant. Perfection.
You shld listen to the original Evita. It is what made Patty a star. And she is not underrated, btw. She has won a Tony. She has been a major performer for thirty plus years, but mostly in live theater. That is probably why you are not very familiar with her work.
I saw Sweeney on Broadway in 1980, near the end of the run, and I could swear I saw Angela and Len in the roles--but I may be remembering their voices on the recording. Maybe the performance I watched was Dorothy Loudon and George Hearn, who replaced them. In any case, I was also in it, as a member of the ensemble, in Denver at the Bonfils Theatre in 1983. We had a pretty fab Mrs. Lovett ourselves. Patti singing this is *tremendous* and vocally unmatched--what a set of lungs! I do think Lansbury got the accent, the characterization, and the entire esprit better than anyone since... especially since she created the role and Sondheim wrote it for her voice! It was a (grim, dark, powerful) joy to be part of our production in Denver so long ago... thrilled I had the opportunity!
I love how while Patti's (or Mrs. Lovett's) having her little breakdown, George (sweeney) is just sitting there with his eyebrows raised going 'Are you done now?' xD
i have this on DVD and cannot stop watching it. i absolutely LOVE patti lupone she is the best and i would never watch this with any other person playing as Mrs Lovett.
This was so much better than her last performance as Mrs. Lovette back in 2005 (Not to mention what the hell is with that hairstyle?). she shows a lot more energy and emotion.
The most impressive thing is the musicians who aren't playing are sitting perfectly straight faced. I would be peering over my music stand with a stupid grin on my face. Patty Lupone!!!!!!
If I was Sweeney and saw a woman give me the look Patti did at 2:15 I probably would have run ahahaha I love Patti. Can't get enough of this performance
I Think that Patti has the element of a person about to go crazy, a lunatic, if you will. She sounds great and she combines that element with the role and you get MRS LOVETT!!!
I completely agree! I haven't seen Tim Burton's movie in its entirety but I've watched the songs from it. For this play it seems the humor is necessary because not only does it makes it more entertaining but I think it provides a contrast that really emphasizes the dark and tragic tones, creating a much stronger impact, if that makes sense.
@HPFan731 You are absolutely right. Some actors are perfect for the stage, others better on film. I would've loved to have seen Patti Lupone or Elaine Paige as Evita, but I think Madonna was the right choice for the film version, as was Antonion Banderas. I don't understand why people can't enjoy and appreciate seeing how different artists perform in the same role when everyone brings something new and exciting to it.
That's phenomenal.I LOVE that obnoxious, loud and hysterical style of hers.Mrs. Lupone is undeniably the best Mrs Lovett.Lovett needs to be a horrible but lovable woman who would do everything about her man.Patti did an awesome job!Angela is also a legendary actress in that but I don't know.....Patti has something special :D....Even though everyone hates her diction and pronunciation I adore it! :D ...
Helena Played Lovett like a highschooler, and that takes very little talent. Patti and Angela both played her as a total nutcase, and still managed to make beautiful music. Helena took the easy road, and i think that her performance was easily the least satisfying.
Angela Landsbury is Mrs. Lovett. Accept no substitutions. Just watch her play. She dances at acting. To see her on stage is to see her perform ballet. The rest of my review: Patti Lupone is the best Gypsy, though.
No, they are two different actresses with similar names. Emma Watson plays Hermione in the Harry Potter movies. Emily Watson was in "Breaking the Waves" and "Gosforth Park" - she's of a more appropriate age to play Mrs. Lovett.
Helena Bonham Carter made me fell in love with this song and Patti version is a bit over the top and yes maybe too comical for my liking but I doubt if miss Bonham Carter would put on a live show like that without the magic of editing.
She’s a very good actress with a spectacularly powerful and expressive voice. Personally I think she’s not great casting for the part. She’s so powerful, she rivals Sweeney. And as clear as she makes everything, again my opinion, it’s almost too clear. It feels really technical. That said, she deftly brings so many great touches to this song. She’s truly a masterful actress for sure. I just miss the vulnerability and oddball flakiness that Lansbury brought to the role.
One of the most difficult songs to sing, and she nailed it perfectly.
LiebeAlle I sang this song for my schools production of Miscast and regretted it in rehearsals. Ridiculously hard to sing and very fast, also, not at all meant for a guy to sing.
Oh, wow! Kudos for trying, though. :)
A cockney accent isn’t easy for Americans but Patti nails it.
Every dough pound and fly assassination are written in the music!! Can you imagine?! She is a unicorn.
The accent is dire but it works in a concert setting
She is magnificent. what a great performance she gave. Her facial expressions are also perfect in this version. The best thing about theater version that I love so much is the live feedback from audience
I love her more!!!
"A CUSTOMAAAA"
I keep replaying this over and over again. It's musical performance at its best. Patti's every move, every expression is incredibly thought-through. Not to mention the comedy of it and of course her unbeatable vibratto to top it all off
I know!! Her vibrato and belting at 1:49 is just amazing! And 1:27 cracks me up!!!
I love at 2:15 when she sings "a woman alone" and flirts with him, looking him up and down. And, of course, that is her motivation. She is looking for a man, while all he can see is revenge.
Such a great choice! One of the first versions I've seen that establishes her desire for Sweeney so soon.
Wow, we never would've guessed.
this is my favourite version. I love how she says "isnt that just... DISGUSTING" AT 1:00 XD love it!
Mine's at 2:13. It's just such a hilarious addition and i love it!
+Matthew Bradley omg yes I love that part too!
She's such talent for comedy!
+jacksonkamiska Ya! but I think she is really good in more of theatre and specifically musical theatre. not just comedy
+Max Fernandez Of course!! She's the legendary Patti LuPone, after all :)
That riff at 2:27 fucks me up every time
The way she performs this reminds me of that vine with the lady going “wELL IT WAS FOKIN ONE OF YUS!!! D I S G U S T E N G”
I love how different Patti LuPone's Mrs Lovett's character has been in different productions. This version is definitely less menacing than others, for sure
Oh man I thought I loved helena's version but this one is absolutely amazing :D
same
You know you're a true theatre nerd when you screech after you read "Patti" and "Sweeney" in the same sentence :')
This is the best performance of this song... ever. Angela was gasping air at every part and Helena couldn't do that live and lacks the technic to sing it the operatic way. Patti simply mastered it, hands down
Yeah but Patti can not crack the accent, unlike Angela and Helena
Arran Bell well, I'm not an english native speaker... and though I notice the difference in her accent, it isn't enough to bother me haha
Helena had the looks. Shame she's taken.
Actually, gasping is in the script. Sorry, but Angela can't be topped :)
Angela and Patti are equally good in my opinion. But not Bonham Carter, not good at all.
“Mrs. Mooney has a pie shop” cracks me up every time lol
Can you please explain the meaning.
@TeamMagicLifeOfficial I think it means what it means. The comment was referring to what she does while singing it 1:25
Her voice is incredible
Patti's coloratura was ... totally unexpected. Bravo!
i love when she sings "with limited wind" because she has the most wind of any singer out there!
Love lupone's singing and expression. In fact, just simply love everything about her performance
Patti Lupone truly is a queen of musical theatre! I'm in love with this version of the song!
''putting pussys into pies...wouldn't do in my shop'' 1:39
No Mrs Lovett..you don't put cats into pies..you do it with corpses. XD
13 people are not actors. Patti Lupone did a phenomenal job at this performance, I was there, and it was awe inspiring. As an Actor, its not about "liking" or "disliking" someone. Its not about who's better. Its about the role they take on, and appreciating that everyone does it differently .
Shes' INTENSE. And I love the "opera moments." This is a great production of Seeney Todd.
Ooooh my Diamond!! All my star that voice! I absolutely love it!
This is quite possibly the best performance of this piece
This is the first time I've seen LuPone perform this number, I must say, it was hilarious! It was refreshing to see a new take on that character, of course I adore Lansbury (not so big on Helena anymore), but I think she really captured this role. Mrs. Lovett shouldn't sound very pretty, she's a poor pie merchant. Perfection.
BEST VERSION.
+Vicky Li IKR! Much better than Helena Bonham Carter XD
nah lol
Her diction is incredible! I understood every word she said. And her comedy is amazing!
Her little pout at 2:32 just kills me.
"Here drink this, -spit- you'll need it!" XDD I love how frazzled she seems.
Patti is the master of mrs. lovitt
She was brilliant in American Horror Story. No idea she was such a great singer. Very underrated actress and brilliantly talented.
she is so not underrated, she is a broadway legend!
Hannahisntinteresting in Coven
Lizisntinteresting lukes mother
You shld listen to the original Evita. It is what made Patty a star. And she is not underrated, btw. She has won a Tony. She has been a major performer for thirty plus years, but mostly in live theater. That is probably why you are not very familiar with her work.
Best version ever💞
"A women..." >.> "ALONE.....With limited wind." I love how she emphasized alone. XD
Absolute Legend. Shame she’s retiring from Broadway Soon. Lets hope we see more of her in SU.
I love how while Patti's (or Mrs. Lovett's) having her little breakdown, George (sweeney) is just sitting there with his eyebrows raised going 'Are you done now?' xD
The 1840's was a hard time for Yellow Diamond.
Really top class performance
I love how she performs "a woman alone".
I love it when she bat's her eyelashes during the "a woman alone..." bit.
best version ever!
Patti LuPone, you literal Queen! 👸
i think this is her best performance of this song
She is my favorite !!! Love how she brings the charector to life.
i have this on DVD and cannot stop watching it.
i absolutely LOVE patti lupone she is the best and i would never watch this with any other person playing as Mrs Lovett.
Fucking brilliant!!! Acting, singing, flirting, coyness, boldness, sexy....she hits it all!
Patty Lupone!!!!!!
does she remind anyone else of bianca del rio a lil bit?
Yeees!!!
hell yeah
holy shit
Jeanne Freeland omg yeah! I wouldn't be that surprised tho, a lot of queens are inspired by bianca these days
Patti would probably loved that!
Best version
Yesss
Love it when she uses her opera voice here and there....
Shes my favourite ms lovett omg
I love Patti’s portrayal of this iconic role, Helena’s as well. However, Angela is my go to Mrs. Lovett
"isn't that just disgusting" was the funniest part, I want her as mrs. lovett on stage
I love her in this and she was fantastic in Penny Dreadful!!💕
My BF and I have an inside joke where we'll randomly shout that at each other. XD
THANX PATTI FOR OUR RANDOM MOMENTS! :P
she is perfection
Best Performance of this song... hands down.
If I was Sweeney and saw a woman give me the look Patti did at 2:15 I probably would have run ahahaha
I love Patti. Can't get enough of this performance
I think her acting is great. It's perfect for the stage...so far my favorite.
She's amazing! I love Helena but Patti makes me laugh. :D
Patti is my favorite Mrs. Lovett tbh
Thank you very much!
I Think that Patti has the element of a person about to go crazy, a lunatic, if you will. She sounds great and she combines that element with the role and you get MRS LOVETT!!!
Perfection
Para mí, Patty LuPone ha sido la mejor Mss. Lovett, incluso por encima de Bonham-Carter y Lansbury.
I Love Patti Lupone's singing she did great for the role! I love Angela Lansbury she was perfect. and Helena was good for the movie!
I really like all the performances for Miss. Lovett but Helena will always be my favorite
The sweetness counterpointed the evil and the insanity...
@daaaniiu -how do you do the heart?
That's phenomenal.I LOVE that obnoxious, loud and hysterical style of hers.Mrs. Lupone is undeniably the best Mrs Lovett.Lovett needs to be a horrible but lovable woman who would do everything about her man.Patti did an awesome job!Angela is also a legendary actress in that but I don't know.....Patti has something special :D....Even though everyone hates her diction and pronunciation I adore it! :D ...
I love her, she's phenominal...… Enough said.
Helena Played Lovett like a highschooler, and that takes very little talent. Patti and Angela both played her as a total nutcase, and still managed to make beautiful music. Helena took the easy road, and i think that her performance was easily the least satisfying.
FREAKING AWESOME!!! I LOVE PATTI
Please ,what year is it! Anyway, I LOVE it!!!
Is "Poor Thing" from this performance up?
I love Patti!!! And this song is so funny
"the best vid on youtube..."
Amazing
Angela Landsbury is Mrs. Lovett. Accept no substitutions. Just watch her play. She dances at acting. To see her on stage is to see her perform ballet.
The rest of my review:
Patti Lupone is the best Gypsy, though.
very talented actress
when i saw this live, i was literally speechless. amazing.
My diamond cannot bake.
all of stephen sondheim songs are difficult to sing imo but she did great
No, they are two different actresses with similar names. Emma Watson plays Hermione in the Harry Potter movies. Emily Watson was in "Breaking the Waves" and "Gosforth Park" - she's of a more appropriate age to play Mrs. Lovett.
This is ridiculously hilarious!!! Hahahahaha I absolutely love it hahahaha.
Who Yellow Diamond made the worst pies in London!
@briandjones89 Actually, this whole concert is on youtube
My dream Sweeney and Ms Lovett pairing is Timothy Nolen (in my opinion the best Sweeney) and Patti Lupone
I love Angela Lansbury! But this woman did just as well. She came over more updated I wouldn't mind watching her do the entire play.
Helena Bonham Carter made me fell in love with this song and Patti version is a bit over the top and yes maybe too comical for my liking but I doubt if miss Bonham Carter would put on a live show like that without the magic of editing.
remember that she's acting for the stage - you have to overt act compared to tv or film because you haven't got a camera doing close ups!
My fav version
I think this is my fav version :)
THIS WAS MY SONG FRESHMAN YEAR
Just loved it xD
omg. amazing!! i love every version i've seen, but this one is especially funny! (a woman... aLONE) haha
awesome
That is so funny!
She’s a very good actress with a spectacularly powerful and expressive voice. Personally I think she’s not great casting for the part. She’s so powerful, she rivals Sweeney.
