- The popliteal space is located on the back of your knee, and it houses a few major muscles that play an important role in keeping your body balanced and functional. The popliteus muscle, for example, works with the biceps femoris to control the motion of your knee. If this area becomes too inflamed or injured, it can cause popliteus muscle pain and discomfort in your leg and may even interfere with walking.
In this video I will teach you where is the popliteus muscle located and two simple massages that you can do within 2 minutes sitting at home, which will help you relieve your popliteus muscle pain aka back on the knee pain.

thank you
You did such a good job of helping me find the muscle at the beginning. I also like how you are encouraging about saying it’s okay if you don’t find the exact muscle, you’ll be able to help yourself by massaging around in the right general area.
Hi, Photography By A! I appreciate your feedback. I'm glad I was able to help
I became aware of the popliteus muscle a few years ago when I suffered from chronic achilles tendonitis. There was scar tissue there bulging out at the back of the heel, and over time it became painful to walk. My chiropractor did something with the popliteus -( he did a massage or knee adjustment, not sure) In a few weeks the scar tissue disappeared and stayed that way and now I walk pain free. And scar tissue went away. It felt like a miracle!
That's awesome, Teri! I am very happy to hear that you found something that worked for you.
Hi Teri. I need your help. I have been suffering from an inflammatory Achilles tendinitis for many years and now I have developed an incredible pain at the back of my knee? Are they correlated? If so , could you kindly let me know what I should do to alleviate the pain. Thanks a lot in advance!❤

I had my popliteus lock up on me Thursday. I finally figured out what was going on Saturday. I massaged it Saturday night and when I went to bed I still couldn't bend my knee. In the middle of the night I tried bending my knee in my sleep and I woke up to a sensation like pulling a sock up your calve but only it was the muscle releasing the tension going down the back of my knee. The only thing I feel now is the soreness from giving myself a deep tissue massage. This video absolutely helps. Good luck.

Wow. Thanks is for this. I was in a motorcycle accident 7 months age. I broke my leg just about 2 inches above my ankle and banged up my knees. Still working on getting the stiffness out. That muscle you mentioned is in a knot on that leg. Nothing on the other leg . You gave me something I can do to improve that knee. It has been fairly unstable but slightly improving. I’ve been working out my whole life so you pointing me in that direction helped. Now I can get those adhesions sorted out and moving like they my are suppose to. Thanks again.
Michael, I am so sorry to hear about your motorcycle accident. I'm glad you are okay! I'm also happy to hear that this is helping improve your knee. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for sharing, I’m having same problem at my right back knee and I did try it, I’m feeling much better, the pain is too much to handle.
Keep at it Gina! Glad to hear you are feeling better!
Thanks mate U nailed it 🙂 I’ve been searching for some time about that disabling pain in the back of my knee. Not even the doctor at the hospital or any knee videos here at youtube, when I was touching the back of my knee as you did right now, I found my own popliteus muscle just easy, a bit infamated dough, found the focus point for all that pain, so now I know which part of my body to be extremely careful as it gets better, my elected workout type is walking so I hike some 4 to 5 hours every second day, might be this my body telling me to slow or low down a bit (and stop for some days jha) and that the problem is not As serious as I thought it would so again thanks mate a lot! your info saved me

I used to suffer from leg cramps in the back of my knee when I was a child. It would bring me to the ground it was so painful. It felt like something was getting twisted. My mom and teachers used to massage it and it helped. I thought I grew out of it as I haven’t had an incident in like 20 plus years.
Today I was kneeling down (like child pose) and it happened again! It brought me to tears and when I stood up it was like a tendon moved back to place or something. It felt better after that but my foot went numb too.
Now it’s sore and I’m TERRIFIED of this happening again. What could be happening???
@wildwyattthecrittercatcher4637 That sounds rough! Leg cramps are no joke, especially when they hit unexpectedly. It might be a good idea to chat with a doctor about what's going on, just to be safe. In the meantime, take it easy and avoid stuff that makes it worse. Maybe some gentle stretches could help too. 🩺🌟

Is there long term benefits for massaging the popliteus? I've been experiencing pain for about 2 months now, (26 y/o male) thanks.
Hi, @Johnnysixpac! Giving your popliteus muscle a massage could help with pain. However, if you've been dealing with pain for two months, it's super important to chat with a healthcare pro for the best advice.
In the meantime, you might want to try using ice or heat on the sore area, do some easy stretches, and steer clear of activities that make it worse. You can also check the related article to this video. Please check out this link: www.feelgoodlife.com/popliteus-pain

All the videos I watched and looking at gif of where the muscle is and were my pain is. It looks like the muscle comes around the outside of the leg to the back of the knee. Yours seems to contradict that. Which is right?
Hi @JP1AO! Understanding anatomy can be confusing, right? Our video shows the popliteus muscle's role in knee movement, but its exact positioning can vary slightly from person to person.

How often would you recommend this self massage so you don't overdo it and inflame the area?
Hello, @M.M435! I suggest doing this self-massage 2-3 times a week. Pay close attention to how your body feels. If you experience any discomfort or increased sensitivity, take a break for a day or two.

Can tight hamstrings cause pain in this muscle, I’m a cyclist and I’m starting to get quite a lot of pain in the popliteus area. I’ve tried lifting and lowering my saddle height but the pain persist.
Hey, rob white! I'm sorry to hear about the pain you're experiencing. If your knees hurt a lot after the exercises, I encourage you to back off. Maybe start with the bare minimum. Obviously, I don't know your specific condition so it's hard to recommend specifics but in general, I normally encourage people to ease into the exercises gradually if they experience pain with the program.

Thanks for your reply. I’ve been a life long cyclist. The pain has only started in the last 6 months, I regularly do 50 km rides each week. I’m 58 so could even be arthritis sneaking in, but from what I’ve researched the pain seems to be in the area of this muscle.

Hey, @mikeriley5568. Thank you for your feedback.
29 Feb 2024…last week had back of knee pain. Afraid it was blood clot. So painful to walk on that leg. Then a 7-year old girl neighbor brought her hula hoops to teach me. I used to do it but now cannot. Tried and tried. I swayed my hips left right really fast to keep the loop from falling. got the hoop around twice. Kept doing this fast hip motion and like magic my back of the knee pain went away.

Must I not go to the docter
Hi, @samanthawilliams-zb7yf! Don't hesitate to reach out to a doctor or a physical therapist for a more accurate evaluation and personalized guidance on your specific case. This is especially important if you suspect a more serious injury or if the pain does not improve with home care. Your health and well-being should always be a top priority.
If you're experiencing discomfort or pain in your popliteus muscle, it's important to consider a few things:
1. Gentle self-massage can sometimes help relieve muscle tension and discomfort. However, it's essential to be cautious and not apply excessive pressure or continue if it causes more pain.
2. Avoid activities that aggravate the pain.
3. Apply ice to the affected area to help reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. Use a cloth or towel to wrap the ice pack to prevent direct contact with your skin.
4. Elevate your leg to help reduce swelling if there's any.
5. Non-prescription pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be considered, but always follow the recommended dosages and consult the label or a healthcare professional.
