- China's pop idols: In the first episode of our new series, Unreported World gains rare access to China’s underground music scene where rappers, hip-hop stars and punk rock veterans are taking huge risks to speak what they see as the truth about their country.
But as Marcel Theroux reports, how long can these unlikely champions of free speech operate in a country where the government is increasingly censoring access to everything from live streaming to social media.

Nbomb looks like a nice guy.
He seems really nice, and his lyrics focus more on the situation than just on cussing and expressing anger.
He is dope
I exclaimed out loud when they said Acrush were girls! Wow!
the underground sound is still young..... it will grow eventually...
maybe you don't know underground sound exists for more than 30 years and it's not banned. In early 90'S,we can get Nirvana, Pearl Jam here.
This creates a very uneasy feeling to be honest. Reminds me of a Nazi-Germany mixed with A Brave New World. Although not alike in forms of extremism but the grooming and producing of brands influencing population. A similarity can also be drawn, in my opinion, to the West. All these Disney pop-artists grooming our children. Thank you for spreading these documentaries. Greeting from Belgium and looking forward to spread and support this channel.
Funny enough Brave new world is actually banned in China. Makes you wonder why haha.
Well, nazi germany was socialist, same as ussr and china. It's all the same type of evil.
@@SPSSkals Nazi Germany was not socialist. Go back to school.
@Changming Chen chill bro. you're presence here is against the law of ccp-controlled china.
@@SPSSkals socialism can be good if done right. Capitalism with elements of socialism can really benefit a country's ppl. Just saying
"The song excites my love for my country"
I laughed so hard at that line xD
what's wrong with that?
Amazing documentary ! Really good work ...
His face when the girl say she is inspired by communism@ 10:51 😂
now chinese hip hop is booming like crazy
Loved this documentary. Thank you!
來看看以前努力的少年們 現在都長大了 也有很棒的名氣 願你們都能走花路💕
Chinese language sounds cool in the rap style
I know ..it's quite catchy . And I'm rarely drawn to rap . I like his individuality 🙂
Yeah
@@timsharpe6652 mhm. im chinese and when I used to live in china we all listened to this.I wouldnt call this underground. A lot of people listen to this.
@@timsharpe6652 I can confirm that this journalist is not speaking 100% the truth. THis is literally almost all youths listen to.
I agree

Really like the nbomb guy. Hopefully the authorities don't do anything bad to him. The level of censorship and government control over there is actually pretty scary.
There's actually a chinese youtuber who documented the beginning of the virus when China were hiding information, they caught him then forced or brainwashed him into saying everything he said was a lie
Yup .u can get arrested spring gym on the floor
@@nikki10114 what?
Them cigarettes 🚬 gonna kill him before the Chinese government would.
funny how punk goes from calling for Anarchy to calling for Democracy :P

nope.. my grandpa is 95 years old still smoke
Ricardo Siahaan is he still alive?
This hip-hop if I aint never seen it before. Keep going homie.
Nbomb is like most 90's rapper telling stories that are real or telling things they have witnessed.
you should make some unreported episodes in US and UK, id like to see how your government treat you guys. hippop culture is not blocked in china, some are forbidden becoz their lyrics relate violence and sex which can lead to the bad impact on teens.
They did one on Las Vegas
no,The Beijing rap group 阴三儿 have been banned for the political wrong When they are getting famous.
The lack of free speech is happening, you and me as a Chinese shouldn't pretended as nothing.see those sad things hapenned everyday in our country.
intresting documentary.. nice work unreported world
I used to live in Yangshuo, great spot
VERY interesting documentary. Chinese protectionism at work in their music industry by restricting Korean K-Pop and letting Chinese bands fill the void.
Drick Lorenz not true. Korean artists are big in China. They go there and have concerts. China is huge kpop fans. Lots of the money comes from them
Richbleedsblue Recently China banned kpop when tensions with SK went down. Idk if it’s been risen yet
teeannroo thank you yea I heard it’s a shame... politics
tbh, lots of Chinese are happy about this... so... what's the big deal?
@@1richnasty It's not shame at all. K-pop is a poison for teenagers. It polluted Korean , now we can't let it pollute China. By the way, don't call those K-pop idols artists. Stop insulting art.
Sad to say but even those with the freedom of speech do not dare to speak enough about the wrong in the world. Most would rather fulfill their selfish agendas and/or feed the market with their empty, superficial words... so glad I found this channel, more people need to discover it and discuss the issues they bring forth, that is bound to build some action eventually
These rebel artists are smart enough, they’d need to create their own CDs and sell ‘em out of the back trunk of their own car.
that's a great way to get arrested
Underrated video
You need to update if Nbomb is still alive or is he MIA?
5:21 - the ministry of culture sounds an awful lot like the ministry of truth. i wish this guy the best of luck because it's only going to get more difficult the larger he becomes.
1:51 mah boi was ready for 2020
22:29 his shirt predicted the future
For real, this kind of rapper is not rare in China..... Go and watch the Chinese TV show zhonguoyouxiha
This was a very interesting video to watch I really like the reporting didn't know a lot of this heard about it but didn't put much thought until now thank you for the knowledge
Yes websites are blocked in China but what you're not telling people is that there is a common way and is practiced by Chinese to get on the wide world web and the Chinese government know and allow because they understand people need to use the Internet for business, marketing etc etc etc. China is in competition with the west and would prefer to be the main competition.
Are you talking about a VPN or DNS service?
Most don't work in China and the ones that do are incredibly slow.
Go guys go!!!
that is very sad
I’m so surprised to see tfboys in this video, I was so not expecting that😂😂

This is defiance is at very low level and very lonely.
I would love to wear boyish clothing (im straight btw) for style too but its really hard when you have such prominent curves or I might not doing it right.
I love the this journalist ♡
He is Marcel Theroux, brother of Louis.
I wonder if N Bomb knows that his name is a euphemism here in the states
从2014年的愚公移山 到现在的疆进酒 丹镇北京的战士从未停止前进 给你们我的尊重 捍卫北京城的自由战士们!
Awesome. Punks for democracy
the price one has to pay for being real can be seen between Nbomb and NFboys....
you did not provide their YT channels. I knew about tf boys before... and I live in Minnesota! they were well-promoted! anyway, this is really good reporting. Well done!

Yeah but it doesn't always work and when it does. It's really slow
@@penumbradeldia3240 you ain’t using the right ones my friend. I never have any problems, my wifi provider in China offers built in vpns.
Also... did they plagiarize Batman, Green Lantern, Power Rangers, and School House Rock in a single music video?
annnnnd then ACRUSH went to SK to become a kpop group
God bless nbomb

I wonder how the government feels about the Higher Brothers, in China? They are huge!
Meg Amor HB doesn't really attract any govs attention since they don’t really sing anything about the society or the politics..

22:13 This 2017s video shown "Wuhan Prison" tees,
Are we sure that Acrush is a women’s group. They are very lanky and flat chested. Plus the voice is very deep...hmmm 🤔
Breewilly They are girls. They are just masculine. Do you not have tomboys in your culture?
Maybe they are boys pretending to be girls pretending to be boys.
The word they used was androgynous (if that's how you spell that word ) , if you took notice of this video . I was surprised . I wouldn't of been like girls . But hence Androgynous. That suits that well !
Just wanted to send a big shout out on behalf of hip hop and the south houston

We see ya baby😎🤗
I don’t see anything bad, i only see people who love their country and their culture. I have learned to appreciate other peoples. Chinese peoples deserve a good life because they suffered for it. I don’t see anything bad.
What would Mao Tse Tung make of hip-hop or punk rock? I know Cornelius Cardew wrote a tract denouncing punk rock as fascist, but does the party see hip-hop or punk rock an instrument of American imperialism?
@Changming Chen ....Yet, they imitate the "nonsense foreigner's" style and genre.
Changming Chen I'm asking what the communist party's official position on punk rock, hip hop, extreme metal and indie rock are. Is the party's position the same one as the Soviet Union had, that it's reactionary and an instrument of American imperialism ?
Shout out to 黄硕!
Not sure how I feel about the gender neutral girl/boy band.
Asian like cute, cuddly, non-threatening things which I think extend to entertainment and their elders like them like here in Communist China. Even other nationalities like it too now. Non-threat...
I’m watching from China using a VPN and it’s really hard to get any access to CZcams. I mean I know collage level stuff but I don’t think any local schools would approve of that. In out local schools (I take an American private school now so no red scarfs for me (and also it’s a mix between communism and socialism here), so I’m not really affected) we were told to think a way, solve equations this way *only* and you can only do this, if you make 1 mistake or 1 wrong answer you will get bullied (like I did) you have to be perfect, or you will be exploited and ridiculed. They do not accept bad grades as an answer and no failing like Einstein.
Oh yeah, there is also one thing called Nine Percent in China where the audience gets to vote whose in and who’s out. Only 9 out of 100 boys go through and becomes a band. Plus, some of the mask boys (what I call “factory idols”) actually can’t sing and are just the pretty face that is on the covers while some ugly looking persons actually songs the songs. Plus, it’s pretty nice here (in terms of things and places, not politics).
Hey. From Kunshan here. But uh. High schoolers only wear red scarfs on assemblies and shit. Also my grades are shit and when u get 1 question wrong or whatever no one givess. Maybe your in the best school in the country...
Red is dangerous, except CZcams Red

Finally, they get some interview by people in others countries and let more people know them. Dungeon Beijing is one of the best HipHop group in Beijing! Hope you like them!

20:29 Need to take out the trash
This turn to hip hope to Cpop? Lmao but omg.. they’re GIRLS?!!! I couldn’t tell because guys in asia do have a girlish feature to them to look more “anime” like. I was like “oh they’re cute” but when they say they were girls I was shook! I have to think and look twice to actually conformed it.. lmao. But this really does give an insight view of the kpop/cpop bg. Everything is fake (no surprise) but all the pictures, places, interactment, and music is all..manufactured. How sad and scary. That we listen and promote bands (not all) that is either for money or the freaking political parties.. I hope N-bomb is still trying to make REAL LIFE music and getting his name out to people. Just like how NWA was. I mean different scenario and setting. But same goal. To be informed.
why do you think there's something wrong with androgynous girls that look like boys? isn't everyone allowed to express themselves how they want? and if they wanted to be different i don't see a problem with their boyish appearance. good on them for being different. can't be easy
marbletrouble never said there was something wrong with them. I actually like them. Just was shock at first of how well they look as guys... please read my comment carefully, I didn’t say anything bad about them.😊
Northern Asian boys are most goodlooking and attractive, Northern Chinese and Mongolians are manly, whats most important, they got a kind heart, looking a bit tough outside, soft and sensitive caring in the inside
fake?? lol stupid ppl everywhere
黄硕可以
14:49 In ur face,reporter?
Trust the Chinese to counterfeit KPop!
CPop sounds really weak, even I can't listen to it. And it's super weird to see them imitate the same surgeries that the KPop stars are getting. You can't tell them apart just by looking at them anymore. Same hair, same facial structure, but maybe different clothing and preferences in jewelry.
ACRUSHHHH AND TFBOYS OMG YESS❤️❤️❤️❤️

It's crazy how music is such a business, but in the USA is the same thing, 'artists' like Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj etc are just a product of capitalism, they are not artists or poets, just business
You can NOT censor a musician, poet, comedian or an artist. It's impossible.
would nord vpn work?*
So in china are stocked with boy's bands, that was from 90's. ...wtf
It is the coward men’s attitude towards women and showing their power and strength against women. These cowards are there every corners of the world!
The rap is familiar a yes capitalism 🤣🤣🤣

🥰🥰🥰
lies...everyones uses vpn's
There is no apostrophe in plural nouns.
This documentary is a bit melodramatic. Everyone knows you can easily access all the banned sites with a VPN. It's not even an issue. Why is this not mentioned?
It is an issue even with a VPN, and I live in a major city
I live in China and I can tell you it's not that easy nowadays. Sure it was easy few years ago, but most people who have access to the internet do not interested in using it because they believe they get everything they need already. And now the Chinese government has even paid more attention to the firewall, many VPN companies got shut down and even established a law to forbid the act to use VPN.
The history is always repeating itself, communists have now power, but the system itself is not a good one, eventually they will either fall or become second (and maybe worse) North Korea. It's so sad, how the government is rotten and everyone is blinded by power, when then again power is just.. pretty much worthless. You can have a comfortable life being a humble being. Controlling others has no point after you think about it. Yes it might bring you some benefits, but at what cost?
LOL,capitalism will cost live
