  • China's pop idols: In the first episode of our new series, Unreported World gains rare access to China’s underground music scene where rappers, hip-hop stars and punk rock veterans are taking huge risks to speak what they see as the truth about their country.
But as Marcel Theroux reports, how long can these unlikely champions of free speech operate in a country where the government is increasingly censoring access to everything from live streaming to social media.

This creates a very uneasy feeling to be honest. Reminds me of a Nazi-Germany mixed with A Brave New World. Although not alike in forms of extremism but the grooming and producing of brands influencing population. A similarity can also be drawn, in my opinion, to the West. All these Disney pop-artists grooming our children. Thank you for spreading these documentaries. Greeting from Belgium and looking forward to spread and support this channel.

I’m watching from China using a VPN and it’s really hard to get any access to CZcams. I mean I know collage level stuff but I don’t think any local schools would approve of that. In out local schools (I take an American private school now so no red scarfs for me (and also it’s a mix between communism and socialism here), so I’m not really affected) we were told to think a way, solve equations this way *only* and you can only do this, if you make 1 mistake or 1 wrong answer you will get bullied (like I did) you have to be perfect, or you will be exploited and ridiculed. They do not accept bad grades as an answer and no failing like Einstein.
Oh yeah, there is also one thing called Nine Percent in China where the audience gets to vote whose in and who’s out. Only 9 out of 100 boys go through and becomes a band. Plus, some of the mask boys (what I call “factory idols”) actually can’t sing and are just the pretty face that is on the covers while some ugly looking persons actually songs the songs. Plus, it’s pretty nice here (in terms of things and places, not politics).

This documentary is a bit melodramatic. Everyone knows you can easily access all the banned sites with a VPN. It's not even an issue. Why is this not mentioned?

It is an issue even with a VPN, and I live in a major city

I live in China and I can tell you it's not that easy nowadays. Sure it was easy few years ago, but most people who have access to the internet do not interested in using it because they believe they get everything they need already. And now the Chinese government has even paid more attention to the firewall, many VPN companies got shut down and even established a law to forbid the act to use VPN.

The history is always repeating itself, communists have now power, but the system itself is not a good one, eventually they will either fall or become second (and maybe worse) North Korea. It's so sad, how the government is rotten and everyone is blinded by power, when then again power is just.. pretty much worthless. You can have a comfortable life being a humble being. Controlling others has no point after you think about it. Yes it might bring you some benefits, but at what cost?
