  • We replace the 1974 steering box with a brand new Borgeson Steering box with excellent results. Our Vette is running Doug's Sidepipe Headers and the Bogeson Unit fit right in without any adjustments

    I'm doing some major upgrades to my Vette and I was on the fence about this one.
    This video made me pull the trigger for my 81 Borgeson upgrade. . Thank you for ALL of the valuable information you have packed into this video.

      Glad I could help - after about a month of use I would completely recommend the additional support bracket that is sold separately. I can see the unit flex and full right and full left. The support bracket is needed for the install. After seeing the flex I am surprised that the bracket does not just come with the kit automatically.

    I'm dealing with my 81, I'm leery of beating on the column and I read somewhere someone had to 'cut' the excess off!
    However a bigger problem... these kits are "out of stock"!
    Today I directly called Borgeson and I appreciate their reps honesty.
    The rep told me "Ray, it could take over 20 weeks until we get a bulk of Jeep cores in before we can make several kits up." They do a bulk of them at once, not just one, and there are no Jeep Cores out there.
    I first called Summit, they 'kinda' lied to me stating "Borgeson makes those kits to order and that's why it could take a few-weeks" ... that was a lie.

    • @lawdogcorvette8565
      @lawdogcorvette8565  Před 2 lety

      I have heard of supply chain issues - I had no trouble beating on the column - it was more like a few taps - the column collapsed easily.

    Thank you for the video. Installing this box on my 75. The instructions indicate to file a flat spot on the steering shaft where the rag joint lock nut contacts. Did you do this? My concern is that if I grind a flat spot, it will be impossible to get the rag join onto the splines of the steering shaft.

    • @lawdogcorvette8565

    Thanks so much, again, for a helpful and informative video. I've been wanting to do this on my 73 convertible, but was dreading the job. Seeing the results, and your 2 1/2 out of 5 wrench rating actually has me optimistic. Couple of questions for you please. Was the kit all inclusive or did you need other parts? Who did you order the kit from, and what's the part number? How many hours were involved in the way? Finally, could you please give us a 6 month review on handling and overall quality / leaks / etc.? Also... LOVE THE NEW SHOP, CONGRATS! can't wait to see more of it

    • @lawdogcorvette8565
      @lawdogcorvette8565  Před 3 lety +1

      you can totally do this job - I ordered my kit from Zip Corvette - Part Number SC-849. The kit comes with everything you need. When ordering make sure to tell the them if you car is factory power steering or factory manual steering - it makes a difference with the Drag Link or relay arm adapter. you will need that mega wrench and the pitman arm puller tool. I have put about 100 miles on the Vette so far and I love the upgrade.

      Consider also purchasing the external support bracket for the unit - it attaches to the frame and makes the entire system more solid. Not sure if it is a must have and I didn't do it. But after installing I kinda wish I did. With the unit out of the vehicle the bracket would not have been any more work to install. Now if I wanted to install it - everything would have to come out. I probably should have spent the extra $100.00

    Perhaps a noob dumb question, but when you bleed the system, do you have the have the pump reservoir capped?

    • @lawdogcorvette8565
      @lawdogcorvette8565  Před 3 lety

      not a dumb question at all - the answer is no. The reservoir is not pressurized. Now you might get a splash of a air bubble as it comes out of the lines but no, the cap does not need to be on to bleed the system.

    By now you've moved on with your vett projects, but My Question is: Does the heat from the header tubes cook the steering box? Would a heat shield, kind of like those used on a starter due to header heat be of any value? Glad to see
    all your work from the install pays off! Good Job!

      @@lawdogcorvette8565 Ha. I'm not far away from you. About 2 and a half hours. I have a pinched nerve in my neck and back so doing stuff like this is getting to be too much for me. I have about an inch of play in my steering wheel before the car actually responds. I'm used to it and doesn't really bother me but probably needs a steering box. Someone told me to take the cover off and put grease in it. So I may try that. Not sure how that would eliminate play in the wheel.
