- "María Elena" is a 1932 popular song written by Lorenzo Barcelata.
The song was dedicated to María Elena, the wife of Mexican President Emilio Portes Gil.
An instrumental version of the song was used for the background theme of the film Bordertown, starring Paul Muni and Bette Davis, in 1935. The next year the words and music were used in the Mexican film María Elena.

Since I ended up w. Broken wrist my time on keyboard has been 0 I think I lwill be able to work w it some by next week. Missing it since it has become part of my daily life. Emilio Portes Gil and Lorenzo Barcelata met years before, when Emilio was an emerging young Mexican politician,
and Barcelata a young musician and composer. They followed their own paths, years passed.
Emilio in his thirties was now becoming more important, a promising politician, when he saw Maria Elena not even 20,
in a train station. He was knocked out. He said to his escorts "I will marry this lady". After some time
they married and Emilio became President some time after.
She immediately gained popularity among the people, specially the poor, because she asked
Emilio to build more schools, to improve the education system, to provide free breakfast to the poor
students. She is still remembered as one of the best First Ladies Mexico have ever had.
Then, Emilio in a reunion, saw Lorenzo (after many years) then a member of a group of the musicians entertaining
the guests. The President asked Lorenzo to compose a song for his wife. Lorenzo requested that he had
to talk with Maria Elena, to have a conversation with her or could not get inspired. Emilio reluctantly
accepted. Lorenzo was only interested in knowing her, feel her personality, to hear her voice, nothing else.
He delivered the partiture immediately after.
