I absolutely loved the live band too ,that moment of " does your mother know" was a brilliant act and a nice surprise. I will definitely go back soon. It's so complex it needs to be seen again. The montage at the start was super, giving a good feel of the excitement and the venue. Loved seeing inside the arena, and thoroughly enjoyed your enthusiastic review. Abba have been innovative throughout their careers from outlandish costumes in 1974 at Eurovision to the first CD ever produced in 1982 (The VIsitors). And now, a new album after 40 years and this fantastic new technology.

I attended a live ABBA concert in Stafford, UK in 1979 and recently went to the ABBA Voyage concert. I thought that both concerts were superb but for very different understandable reasons.
In 1979, being an ABBA fan was unfashionable and there was no difficulty in obtaining tickets for the concert. ABBA had fewer smash hits and so the playlist included music of very different styles from their albums. I remember the song `The Way Old Friends Do' in subdued light creating a lasting impression. The combination of the `ABBA sound and Ballads etc' music took the concert to a level that is unobtainable for other groups in my view.
The 2022 musical concert concentrated on their big hits and musically that was less effective to my ear than when their full repertoire was performed. These songs were selected to sell records but there are many less commercial songs in their albums of similar merit. I thought that the avatars were convincing, the music was excellent and the visual effects astounding.
I also thought that the concert could be improved by slight tweets in the show. In the period before the show started, I thought that the music was inappropriate as it did not get me into the right mood for the concert. A better alternative, which was used in 1979, was to play ABBA music that was not going to be included in the concert.
I thought that the first two songs were of the wrong type and would be better included later in the concert as they are in concerts by Tribute Bands. What was required was a more upbeat first song which did not happen until the third song. It was only after this song that I got into appreciating the concert.
In 1979, the volume of the music was such that audience participation could be clearly heard and that improved the music by giving it an extra tier of sound. In the 2022 show, the music was so loud that I could not hear the audience.
I thought that the concert needed to be attended several times to fully appreciate what had been achieved. It was a wonderful experience but did not replicate the live performance that I attended in 1979 because of the different type of playlist.

I sadly didn't attend the 79 one only being 7 but went to Voyage this August. Massively agree on the first songs - I was a bit confused as I didn't recognise them and some of those around me looked the same, I was relieved when the 3rd one kicked in. Also agree about being able to hear the audience sing along. The Light show and the whole set up on of the stage and its movement to create different views was brilliant and I loved it - I would go again in a heart beat and I think I would definitely enjoy more knowing what to expect. One thing I really liked and should be put into all venues and shows music or other wise is the banning of phones / cameras it was so refreshing not to see a sea of screens and people just enjoying the experience x

It's a bloody brilliant show! I did feel conflicted too about the video musical interludes when the Abbatars vanish. But if the concept was to present a megastar global act in a landmark residency as if the band were actually really doing it then like all major acts like Madonna, Kylie, etc there are video interludes during their concerts for giving the artists a break and a costume change and set change so you could argue it adds a realness to the production. And also makes the Abbatars more special as not always present. The realness of the Abbatars is mind blowing!!!! We want ABBA!!!

Went to the show last night. It was such an overload to the senses that I found it difficult to articulate what I thought. So.... went again today and I was blown away. It is an absolute marvel to behold and a total joy . I think Abba and their associates own the arena and plan to dissemble and rebuild somewhere else, eventually. The site will eventually be used to build houses, I read.

Yes, ABBA built it, they're just leasing the land. It's on, and yes that's right. It will be going to build more housing once it's run is complete there. Other venue cities considered were, Las Vegas, Sydney, or New York and actually Las Vegas is the one that's more notable and winning the possible next site. Site mainly because that's what Vegas has become now.... Residencies ... Just makes sense to have ABBA there

I was there on 26th to see all 4 members of ABBA arrive and on 27th to see the show. All four members of the band were there on both nights, it was so wonderful to see the all together in public after sooooo long! I got some great pics as they got out of the taxi outside.
On the 27th after Thank You For The Music, the audience turned towards where the group were sitting and cheered and applauded (I had tears rolling down my cheeks at that point). I was so lucky in that I actually got to see ABBA perform live back in 1979 at the famous Wembley Arena concert that was later released as a CD. These ABBA Voyage are just out of this world and I still cant believe that I wasnt seeing the group live on stage again, that is how realistic it is. Thanks for ALL your great ABBA reviews its great to see someone young get so much joy and pleasure from the best band EVER! Its my birthday tomorrow (19 June) and guess where Im going! • @officialsimonharris

It was incrdible! (I didn't get the badge) - I think they had the videos of Voulez Vous and Eagle to give a break from the Avatars and leave the audience wanting more (which works better than anyone taking them for granted) - the videos were incredible too and if you listen to the pulled vids on here showing that little set the videos got as much of a massive audience cheer as the rest of the show. I hope they add Take a Chance on me and Money Money . . . .

I read somewhere that the pause you mentioned is to prevent the tech from overheating. That's why animated videos are used while the ABBAtars change their costumes. Changing outfits this way added a beautiful authenticity as it would happen at a real concert.

Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, James Brown, The Carpenters, Rush, Van Halen are bands I wish I could have seen live (well, I actually saw Rush, and Neil Peart stole the show with his percussion solo). The problem to solve for this new technology would be finding someone who can convincingly play drums for Rush and Led Zep, and lead guitar for Van Halen. You could use original recordings for Karen Carpenter and James Brown. Their Avatars would not be as realistic as ABBAtars. I think it would be something worth doing.

There are no plans for the Arena to be handed on to other artists. If anything, it is to be dismantled & moved to another location. My guess, next stop, Berlin.

There is a real ten piece band there, including three backing singers who perform throughout the concert. They somehow work with the avatars. The ABBA vocals are maybe a mixture of real live performances from the past and studio recordings made to sound as in a concert and these are interwoven with the band playing in the arena.. It's very cleverly done.

Hi Joe what a fantastic insight from you, and your views
re your night at ABBA VOYAGE.
Jackets were worn at Australia Airport which you see in ABBA THE MOVIE.
Re the 2 badges may I have one lol
I cannot go to see the avatars show because it would spoil all my memories from 1979, U see I went to see THE REAL ABBA LIVE IN CONCERT, at Wembley Arena London Saturday 10th November 1979, after the concert me and my boyfriend got invited backstage to ABBA's Rap Party, where we sat and drank champagne with all 4 members of ABBA, I sat in the middle with 2 members of ABBA on either side,
I was 18 at the time and Imagine me I was on cloud 9 meeting my heroes fave pop group.
I remember watching them win the eurovision song contest with my gran in 1974.
So I fell in love with ABBA from age of 14

Honestly this has been said in interviews as well, but with bands like Queen and The Beatles, This technology would not work nearly as well. Which performers that are no longer alive? That was the main core part of putting this together. Is the motion capture they did with the actual group and being that artist like Freddie Mercury are no longer alive? It would be impossible to capture his motions and it would be just more guessing if anything and visual assumptions. So it's nice as it sounds and definitely does sound nice. It would not work with any groups that have members that are no longer living now. Fleetwood Mac. They could do this very well , it's almost scary that Stevie nicks could go in there with a motion capture suit and just dance her heart out and it could be captured in avatar form , just like ABBA was

Okay, I don't want to be the devil's advocate here, but I am not yet convinced to spend a lot of money on tickets + getting to London, etc. How is this better than a tribute band (and we know there are good ABBA tribute bands out there)? You talk a lot about the arena, the lights, etc., but from what I have seen in different videos of the concert this looks nothing like an ABBA live concert. Thank God, we KNOW what ABBA sound like live, we know their weaknesses and strengths, and to me, that's one of the things I love about them. They were not perfect. This concert looks way too polished for me. Perfect dance moves, perfect voices.....looks like something made for the social media generation. Not necessarily a bad thing, given the fact that it might attract young people to their music, but still, why would older guys go see this instead of Bjorn Again for example?

@@toby9999 well, maybe you are right if you have that inside information and are sure of it. I was at the concert (which I am assuming you were too by your knowledge), but I can only say from knowing all their recorded songs over the years that these were not the same vocals that I am so used to, as one could detect the minute differences in tone, timing etc., but they may have changed it since the opening night, I don't know. Possibly some of it was 'enhanced' a bit, I am not sure. I am not so good at being analytical and scrutinizing all the minutiae of it all with all the tech side of it etc. All I know is that it was a very enjoyable show and I am glad they did it.
I guess there will always be some imperfections or observances that people will spot or debate which kinda dampens it for me. To me it seemed as if the live band were playing along to NEW recorded vocals with their avatars doing their very movements as they they were a 'bit slower' physically in some places, but I can still hear some of it in my head, and it's not off records.

You seem like a likeable guy, and I myself LOVED the show! 🤩 What I don't get is WHY you had to disrespect ABBA and their team by filming during the show. That nearly ruined the whole experience for me, having morons around me taking their damn phones up. I didn't pay for a London trip ( I don't live in the UK ) and tickets to see a bunch of glaring phone screens in front of me... Plus phone footage looks like shit, so what's the point?? If you ever go again, please respect ABBA's wishes and the people around you more than that. Cheers!

    • @toby9999
      @toby9999 Před 2 lety +3

You might be right about not filming but there are a lot of long time fans out there like me who've been ABBA fans since the early 70's but who'll never ever be able to attend the concert. We appreciate immensely the chance to see a few short clips. Obviously keep them short and of good quality out of respect and don't bug others while filming etc. Because sadly for most of us, that's probably all we'll ever get to see. Personally, I would find the dancing, shouting, arm waving and loud singing way more annoying than a few phones. And with respect, it's not your job to police the concert.
Something else to consider... ABBA wouldn't have been able to create this concert without their long suffering fans. It wouldn't have been viable. The old bootleg stuff has played a huge role in keeping ABBA current. That's what kept me interested. That's why I've bought a bunch of ABBA's CDs and DVDs recently. Until the Voyage stuff, ABBA themselves had done very little over the past 40 years except repackage old stuff. I'm confident a lot of people will attend the concert because of the clips. It's effectively free advertising.

    • @mybiz2167
      @mybiz2167 Před 2 lety

@@toby9999 I have never claimed to "police" the concert, I didn't tell people off in the arena for disrespecting the wishes of the entire ABBA Voyage team. Simply because I didn't want to ruin the experience any more than they already did for me.
I was seated and there were no shouting or arm waving anywhere near me, the only distraction were the childish adults that probably got a kick out of being "naughty" by using their phones.
I disagree that it's free advertising. In no way does the footage accurately describe what you will see at the show. It looks cheap, if anything it would turn people off. Of course their fanbase has made this possible, but does that justify acting like an immature child who can't take directions? The people being there are THERE for God's sake. No need to film. The ones who can't go... Sorry about that, you/they must live outside of Europe because otherwise a trip to London is not that expensive, but expensive enough to not want to be bothered at the show. I traveled from overseas and I'm no millionaire.😅 You could plan to go during winter, when flights/hotels are even cheaper. Anyway, I've given feedback to the Voyage team after receiving their survey, can't do more than that but I was curious to get a reply here from someone defending what I consider to be a completely stupid act - filming without permission.
