Why Iron Maiden keep ignoring them?

- Every Iron Maiden fan knows that the band has never played Alexander the Great live. And of course this year, 2 023, with Iron Maiden's The Future Past Tour this is hopefully about the change. Yet there are many songs in the Iron Maiden repertoire which the band has absolutely ignored throughout the years, songs Iron Maiden never played live, including Empire of the Clouds, Sun and Steel, Judas Be My Guide, Flash of the Blade and many more. And if in case of some of the tracks it is totally understandable, the others remain a hidden gem of the Iron Maiden's career! So, as a part of our Up The Irons Series let's take a look at all of them and discuss why Iron Maiden might ignore them. And how many of them did you count?

*Will Maiden play Alexander this year? I say yes!*
Also, for all my Patrons, left the links to those recordings here - www.patreon.com/posts/songs-iron-never-77832678
@Ace Courage I thought that was The Beatles!
You say, "Yes", I say, "No"
You say, "Stop" and I say, "Go, go, go"
Oh no
😃😆🙂
I always thought that run silent run deep and Judas be my guide would be great songs live
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame...We vote for Maiden (slava ukraine!)
They won’t play Alexandar the III of Macedon!
Yes, 100% Maiden will play Alexander the Great this year 2023. Life long fan, still have my Donnington '92 ticket, first saw them with Anthrax supporting when I was 13 in London Wembley arena. Up the Irons and sending love to Ukraine.
"The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" is definitely in my personal top 10.
I strongly agree. But i think our dreams will never come true 😥
I love déjà vu, it’s almost like a Judas Priest song.
There is a live version here on CZcams. That is definately my favorite MAIDEN song from somewhere in Time. Come to think of it, I'll go so far as to put it in my top 5 favorites. It makes the hair stand up on my arms.
@@tommyrivas2377 It's one of my favs, but they're not going to play it
It's so funny.... when I was younger and still learning about their discography I saw that title and was like "man they're really stretching for ideas now" ha
I still can't believe that Maiden hasn't played "Judas Be My Guide" live to this day. It's an amazing song and they could easily play it even at their current age.
Such a great song! Definitely one of the highlights from Fear of the Dark with only the title track rivaling it (in my opinion.)
Song is soooo good
They can play any of their songs at their current age. It's just a matter of doing it because of having such an extensive catalog!
that's not a problem 😅😅
great great song
It's shocking how they still haven't played Flash of the Blade live. That song just begs to be played live in a giant arena!
I think back then they were concerned how they could perform this live with two guitars... but now with three guitars on stage, it should be possible!
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is one of my favorite IM tracks from my early days of discovering them in 2003-2005. Frankly, it brings back so many memories, I discovered it right when I was with my first girlfriend and there's just something special about all those memories. Wild time in my life, full of depression, death, and loss, and honestly, this song might be one of the only positives to come out of that time for me.
I always thought "Only the Good Die Young" and "Deja Vu" would make great encore songs
I would love to see a “deep cuts”concert from Iron Maiden
That'd be awesome, but unfortunately Maiden are well known for their predictable set list and their 5 or 6 songs they never drop from the set.
the duelist IS a crime against humanity to have not been played😡😭😭😭 Is one of my favorite song of all time , with incredible harmonies and solos. so so so so much underated
cool how many version do you have on record or cd?
... although it resembles "Where eagles dare" in certain parts of the song, don't you think?
I'd love to hear Gangland, Sun And Steel, Prodigal Son, Alexander The Great, Invaders and Flash Of The Blade live.
I can do without Gangland. I'd much rather hear Total Eclipse, Sun And Steel, The Duellists, Flash Of The Blade, The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner, Deja Vu, Alexander The Great, That Girl, & Reach Out. They actually play The Evil That Men Do, from time to time
yes I totally agree with you
No way bruce can hit the notes in flash of the blade 😂
@@toddlesiak3837 the duellist!!!!!!! One of their very best
@@ElevatedLevetator It sure is!!!
I’m with you about Hell on Earth. It’s one of my favorite songs ever, by any band.
Same here. They NEED to play it this tour. Song makes me feel ways I forgot I could feel
I was at the Tulsa, Oklahoma concert in September and I thought they played Hell on Earth. Maybe I was just tripping 🤷 🤣
I am hoping to see them in Finland or Sweden this year and really wish they add Infinite Dreams to their set list. I think it’s one of their most underrated songs ever
I love that song too, but if they didn't play it live in 2012 back in the seventh son retrospective tour, I honestly don't think they'll ever play it again unfortunately.
They played it back in the day, during the 7th Son tour.
newsflash its not underated amoungst Maiden fans. Its always named as one of the highlights on SSOSS and/or Maiden England
man i really need to hear montsegeur live, one of maiden’s heaviest and a personal favorite of mine
Mine too!
I REALLY hope they FINALLY play Montsegur Live! It's an awesome track and so under rated! It would also sound KILLER Live!
I love Montsegur. Their heaviest track, I would say, and so damn historically meaningful.
Definitely want to hear Judas be my guide
I would love to hear Iron Maiden perform "Reach Out" (b-side w/Adrian on vocals) live !!
I believe the reason why they haven't played Face in the Sand live is because it's the only song Nicko used double bass for and he's said in interviews that it was actually very difficult for him as he's traditionally a single pedal guy. Insane because he basically plays double bass style stuff like triplets and gallops on a single pedal. Nicko is a beast of a drummer.
Yeah, he apparently finished recording the drums, took the double pedal off his kit and threw it straight in the bin! 😂
Childhood's End is one of the best songs on that album... Chains of Misery is a strong song also
➕ judas be my guide
@@bokohara620 lol that's the beauty of Maiden albums, all good songs, but something special for everyone! To me judas be my guide is the weakest track on the album lol.... but to each his own
Absolutely agree. And that's what I love about the band
@@ryananthony4840 Weaker than The Apparition? Cause that song's... yeesh.
Great video, some good points have been made here lol, listening and watching
Besides Alexander the great, imagine Iron Maiden playing The Prophecy with an extended outro, the three guitars (Janick, Dave and Adrian) and also Bruce with a guitar playing this beautiful outro. Would be an epic moment.
Love Sun and Steel, actually Piece of Mind is a masterpiece altogether.
Their best record IMO.
@@malakbrood667 As far as I'm concerned it's their only album without at least one skip able song.
It's good, but not as good as Number Of The Beast. Better production though.
@@hinjurock70it’s better then number of the beast, better songs
@@noodlesramen3137
Hallowed Be Thy Name and 22 Acacia Ave are better than anything on Piece Of Mind. Revelations comes close. And Clive Burr destroys Nicko McBoring - he was a far more powerful, energetic, and aggressive drummer.
Thank you for your great videos
Great stuff. Love your content.
I pray I get to see them at least one more time 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
gangland is a killer song. total eclipse sounds to me half baked or forced, not natural. even bruce sounds like how he sounds in Samson. yeah, steve and bruce prefers total eclipse but i'm sure adrian would prefer gangland, he did a guitar tutorial on that song recently. and you can see how he enjoys that song.
Truth.
Gangland is actually my second favorite song on that album after Hallowed Be Thy Name.
it isnt a killer song... its a number of the beast song ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
When I first heard Total Eclipse I was surprised they hadn't put it on the album
Gangland kicks Total Eclipse around the block. I can't believe anybody thinks Total Eclipse is better, something wrong with their ears. It's like they just want to make Steve Harris happy. Gangland is a really great song. Sorry, it is, it absolutely is.
“Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter” is one of my all time favorite Iron Maiden songs! With so many albums and sooo many great songs to choose from, it’s only natural that the longer they are around, the less of the new album you are going to hear. Everyone wants to hear their old favorites at a concert……
That song is a joke. Easilly one of the worst IM songs ever IMHO
@@charliebald1079 Everyone has their opinion. If we didn’t, then the world would be boring!
I grew up with Maiden as it was one of my step-dad's favorites with my first albulm (yes, an actually albulm) being Powerslave when it was released. The last albulm I purchased was Fear of the Dark & I have yet had the chance to see them live Just like with Metallica I wish I could be ensured a set list from the first half of their discography so here is hoping they come to somewhere near Omaha, NE USA this coming year as I would love to hear just their old stuff. Great video!
GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR COUNTRY... LANCE from Dallas Texas
22 Acacia Ave needs to be played more often - it's one of their best songs.
Imagine they played the Charlotte saga - Charlotte The Harlot, 22 Acacia Avenue, Hooks In You and From Here To Eternity.
@@CoffeeMatt10
I can do without the latter two songs.
Up the Irons! Amazing video been a Maiden fan since the age of 13 I am 46 now, seen them live only twice but I count myself lucky as they were amazing experiences, nobody else does a show like Maiden 😁 \M/
Same here dude, loved them for 20 plus years and seen them twice, so good!
"The Nomad" should actually be a MUST on each setlist
The Thin Line Between Love and Hate is one of Maiden's finest songs. It more than deserves an inclusion on the concert setlists. The same can't be said of Quest for Fire... "In an age when dinosaurs ruled the earth..." Not even Spinal Tap would go that far
Haha so true
yes but look how Maiden develloped (especially the last albums) almost only super heavy depressive mental subjects they take on. Its too neurotic instead of boogieloose and happy in the wild.
Hey Pilgrim. I just wondered a few days ago how the hell were was you about all this bloody situation. And finally I already seen this video... Despite of the content in it ( interesting) I want you to know I'm glad hear from you again. Greetings from the South of Spain. Cheer my friend! Don't give up!
A total eclipse vs gangland is something id personally enjoy! Good video man. 🤘
Just doesn’t get any better than Maiden.
Two weeks ago I picked up a copy of "Somewhere In Time" on cassette.Over the years I've also owned the vinyl and CD formats of the release."The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner" is absolutely a hidden gem...I mean it is such a GREAT FUCKING SONG!!!!!!Deja Vu is also amazing!!!!🤘Thanks for another kick ass metal pilgrim video,I hope you are doing as well as possible in the middle of a war zone my friend, looking forward too the next episode.🙂🎸🎶🤘🤘🤘I also agree with you about "The Thin Line between Love & Hate"!!!!!
Loneliness of the long distance runner, Judas be my guide and Hell on earth are the 1st 3 that come to mind, and YES Empire of the clouds! I would also love to hear Rainmaker on the list again. Strange World, Transylvania, twilight zone...Please no more NOTB, RTTH, 2MTM, Trooper, they've been played to death. I'm just thrilled that they continue to release new music and play at least half of the new album most times when it's the tour for the new album. We've been hearing the classics for decades. And they have 17 albums! So PLEASE change it up and break out more of the last 23 years worth of music. They've absolutely destroyed in the creativity department.
The band have commented in the past that EOTC is too difficult to play live in order to do it justice because they would want the classical instruments to also be played live. They've said that touring with half an orchestra is too much. But, maybe just once at-home at the O2 with the London Symphonic?
@Geert van de Vorstenbosch true, and we'd want to see it done as well as possible. I'm just sick of the fans who bitch, piss and moan that they are playing new material. Any legendary act who has more than a few albums I don't envy them choosing a setlist, but with that much material I don't get why doing an entire setlist of rarities/deep album cuts is such a taboo thing. They're Iron Fuckin Maiden, they've proved they can do damn well what they want. I'd also be fine if they left Wrathchild and Iron Maiden off the list. Yes I said that. I only get to see them play live once every few years, and I'd love to be pleasantly surprised at what they deliver on. They're always amazing, but man...shake it up guys. They're absolutely capable.
I resently went to the Worcester MA. Show and they played blood Brothers. It's a day ill never forget...
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is the song which I would like to hear live...
I don’t care what they play, l just hope they come around close by. I only seen maiden once , best concert l ever seen.
I've seen Maiden 8 times and they never disappoint let me tell you!!
Close by ? ~ Another continent.
"Sun and Steel" and "The Duellists" are two of Maiden's strongest deep cuts, and deserve to be played live. And, of course, "Gangland," absolutely!
47 years and still rocking
I made my fourteen-year-old son go with me to the most recent iron maiden show in Spokane.. since that day he is abandon All mainstream music media and only listen to iron maiden.. iron maiden uniting families for decades now
So it begins... Beautiful reference.
Déja Vu, Prodigal Son and Still Life are in my top 5 of Maiden songs.
About next chapter of the series you could talk about b sides.
Can you Imagine a tour, only with never played songs and/or only with all b sides?
Or at least a couple of concerts and then release it as a DVD. I'd love that!
@@MetalPilgrim it would be amazing
I was lucky enough to hear Bruce sing a couple minutes of "Alexander the Great" when I saw his speaking tour in Dallas last year.
I agree strongly on the Dance of Death record. That is my favorite of the reunion years. Face In The Sand, Montsegur are both GREAT tracks. And the big songs on that record need more love to.
Of course I would also love to hear these: Progigal Son, Gangland, Back In The Village, Alexander The Great, The Prophecy.
I also like No Prayer... especially the proggier songs... Fates Warning, No Prayer, Run Silent are all great songs. Plus, Public Enema. That is my fave.
Other tunes I would love to hear live: Mother of Mercy and Starblind. When The River Runs Deep.
I come after the beginning of The Future Past Tour, and yes, this video aged well 😎 Love you Metal Pilgrim
seventh son was my first iron maiden concert. I was so MAD that my favorite song Deja-Vu wasn't played.
Since 1985 I have been going to IRON MAIDEN shows each year I find my self getting pumped up with these lyrics " DRAWN BY QUEST FOR FIRE WE SEARCH ALL THOUGH THE LAND" it sums up what I am planning to enjoy
Fire. Adventure. Search for history to be made
UP THE IRONS
I like The Nomad and Montseguer enough to trade them for Running Free, Wrathchild, The Trooper and Aces High! I'd love to see your dream set list for a Maiden festival on an upcoming "Up The Irons" episode. I'd have it be a four night MAIDENFEST music festival with Iron Maiden headling the opening and closing nights! Two setlists to play with here. You could choose a theme such as "Classics", "Epics"," "Albums in their entirety", Heaven and Hell" etc... As far as a dream setlist goes it's up to you what you choose thematically. For my dream setlists, I'm going with: Before and After themed sets. Before Bruce left and after he returned. The first night will be a shorter set to give Bruce a chance to get ready for the epic set to close the festival.

Out of the silent planet . The single version , absolutely amazing song
One of my all time personal favorites
I wish they played Infinite Dreams at concerts again. When was the last time?
The last time they played it was Hammersmith '88. On record.
It's a very hard song to sing live every night. I don't think that Bruce could handle it at this point.
Would LOVE to hear The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner!!!
I’ve heard Caught Somewhere in Time is to make a comeback on the coming tour, but other songs I’d love to hear are Man on the Edge from The X-Factor, Back in the Village from Powerslave, Sea of Madness from SIT, Only the Good Die Young from Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Monstegur from Dance of Death and Judas Be My Guide from Fear of the Dark.
I LOVE quest for fire!!!!! Such a tasty solo
Nothing wrong in promoting the things you are proud of , keep pushing .
Deja Vu is one of my favorite songs on Somewhere In Time
I want to hear Empire Of The Clouds!!
Somewhere in time is my favorite albumt by Maiden, and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is my favorite track. I would love to see it live.
I listened to , and only listened to, hell on earth for about 3 months after its release. This has gotta be played live
Quest for Fire? I love Quest For Fire! It was often rocking through my teenaged head.
I would love to hear,To Tame a land live.
It’s great, way better than current “progressive” songs. But it was played on most of the shows in 1983
Face in the Sand was the song my wife and I walked into our reception to
I agree that montsegur should be played. It's actually one of the best songs they ever written.
Best song on that album. It's miles better than the boring No more lies which actually did get in the setlist ahead of it on that tour.
Great video! I have thought for sometime now that they should do a tour of nothing but deep tracks. Their catalog is deep enough and strong enough to do it.
I really appreciate how you can still record these videos and have such a fantastic humor sense in the middle of that unfair war. I support Ukraine as I would support every human life in war (except politicians life), and you have here a new subscriber. Love your Iron Maiden content!
And by the way, I always wanted to hear Como Estais Amigos live since I'm from Argentina, and that song talks about Falklands War. And if we talk about The Thin Line Between Love And Hate... I just can't understand, it doesn't make any sense how they never included this song on a setlist. Great video!
Thank you!
What Iron Maiden should do is special tour where they play not 1 but 2 shows in every city, and then they can play 4 to 5 hours (in 2 nights). Of course they'd stop in fewer cities but the current normal concert format is simply no longer enough for all the songs they have
Like what Metallica are going to do on their tour this year… two nights with no repeated songs.
Maybe Maiden (and other bands) could do what Metallica did in 2014 on their “by request” tour, and have the fans that purchased tickets select the setlist for the show they are attending.
@@CoffeeMatt10 Oh wow!
I love this. It would be cool to find out what songs other bands don't play live like Motörhead, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, etc. 🤘💀
Flash of the Blade, It's about swords and Senjitsu has an Eddie with a sword on it so it's finally going to happen!
The Ides of march was recorded before Maiden by Samson only called Thunder burst off their Head on album. Harris is credited.
40 years ago or so I’ve seen them 5 times here in Phoenix
Although this may never have featured in their album, I’d love to hear Virus performed live by them.
My alltime favourite of the band. I would love to hear Bruce singing it.
Surprising they haven't done Quest for Fire I love that song. I also love their cover of I got the fire.\m/
Probably makes em feel dumb and jurassic and non-academic. Its too primitive now.
Judgement of Heaven is absolutely stunning imo. It’s the Maiden song I just randomly sing to my pets the most.
Brilliant song from a hugely under appreciated album
I actually prefer The X factor to some of the post reunion albums. I've never been completely sold on A matter of life and death for example. The x factor has some good songs on it, not just the excellent Sign of the cross.
Loved that little "no one cares" graphic 😂 that was gold
Much love to Ukraine ❤️
Great intriguing video🤗
Up the mighty Iron's🤘🤘🤘🤘
Flash of the Blade is the one song, I would love to hear live. But would also love to hear Alexander the Great, Charlotte the Harlot and 22 Acacia Ave back to back, Déjà Vu, Afraid to shoot strangers, Empire of the Sun and Lightning Strikes Twice. Cheers!
Caught Somewhere In Time
Opening number Somewhere on Tour, I was there!
Would pay money to hear The Rime, and remember feeling gutted they didn't play Hallowed when I saw em at the 02
Invaders was played live in NZ back in '92 :)
When Somewhere In Time was released I thought it was a real departure from their usual style. I was only sixteen at the time and still quite ignorant. But over the decades that followed I slowly began to appreciate Somewhere In Time. I’m now in my fifties and the SIT album now resides in my top five Maiden albums.
But hearing Alexander The Great live would be amazing. 7:45
I did NOT know they played Back in the Village once - thought they never did. That's one criminally underrated song. I bet they don't play it live bc it's among their more technically difficult pieces.
I've listened powerslave so many times and that is clearly the worst song in the album.
That's what we have Hi-OnMaiden for.
Funny gangland sun and steel and prodigal son are all some of my favorites and I play them all
Total eclipse blew me away, its amazing
Gangland is super awesome, Only the Good... is amazing track too. And... sorry everyone, but "No Prayer..." is and forever will be my all-time favourite Maiden record(and Bruce's vocals too)! Up the Irons!
Iron Maiden/ Iron Maiden was a amazing song!! I love hearing
I generally think that songs co-written by Dave should become more attention since they are the most interesting from a harmonic viewpoint: deja-vu, prophecy, Judas be my guide, man of sorrows. I also like the songs co-written by their drummers (which, funny enough, are on the 7th position on the respective records): gangland and new frontier (which is really great!). And although Adrian’s compositions are well represented live, I would very much like to hear back in the village which is the song with the most elaborate riff of their repertoire. And I would of course love to hear any of Steve’s longest tracks on each album (except the one from NPFTD - where I think the title track should have been extended to be the longest one as it certainly the only track from this album that can be compared with great tracks from IM repertoire): mariner (yes it was played live but it’s still the best storytelling track), to tame a land, Alexander the Great, the thin line between Love and hate, and the most recent parchment (yes it’s longer than HOE and has better solos).
Unfortunately because of Nicko’s obsessive idea to refrain from double bass Face in the sand will never be played live (and actually Stratego had a simplified and weaker drum part in the live performance).
I hope (although I have no reason to believe it) that the band will play at least one of my favorite 3 songs from TFF: Coming home (with the fantastic Dave solo on an Adrian song!), Starblind (fantastic Adrian riffs!), or the Talisman (actually typical IM song quite similar to the duellists)
The only consolation for me is that since SIT and S are so strong albums, anything played from them would sound great live…
I've watched Iron Maiden live about 10 times. They're great live, but the more recent records don't make it for me, and I've heard most of the classics now, so I've started skipping their shows.
With that said, Invaders, Deja Vu and The Prophecy are 3 of my fave IM songs and I'd go see a show for those songs alone.
Back in 95, in the X Factor tour I got to interview Nicko McBrain and asked him to get Invaders into the setlist... But well, it never happened 😅
Might be odd to ask him for a song he didn't record, but he told me he loved the song, and also mentioned he really loved Murders in the Rue Morgue 😁
Being a huge fan of “Somewhere in Time” and “Alexander the Great” my favorite on that album. I would love to see it live. At this point I would love to see them live for the first time!!! Being a huge prog and prog metal band fan. Definitely want to see “Empire of the Clouds”!!! I definitely need to find your other channel! If you haven’t done Haken on that channel you definitely need to check them out! By far the best metal prog band out there!!! In my opinion
Damn from this list, IDK but face in the sand and montsegur.... f.*** i didnt know they were never played live, absolute favorites in dance of death. Also DD has a special place in my heart since it was the first songs of iron maiden that pull me in when teenager. UP THE IRONS and SLAVA UKRAINI!!!!
At this stage of their career, they could even do a tour with songs from the albums "No prayer.." and "Fear of the dark", and make that a killer show! With three guitars, songs like "Fear is the key" or "Weekend warrior" could be done much better than with only two guitars on stage... and "Fates warning" is underrated anyway! Then throw in "Sun and Steel" and some other underplayed songs, would be a very interesting setlist!
I completely agree with you about the 2 Blaze-era albums. However, NPFTD has some great fun songs. Compared to, say, DoD and the next two albums.
Hi
In 2008 I saw them live in Dubai. My memory may deceive me but I’m sure they played Alexander the Great
15:41 which is a shame, because it's maybe my favorite Blaze's era song
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame...We vote for Maiden
They played Ides of March live in Canada on their tour here in 1980. No tape, them actually playing it.
Flash of the blade the most underrated song from powerslave in my opinion. it Rocks 🤘
I really want to hear Loneliness too. That was the first song I thought of. In fact, I'd rather hear it than Alexander the Great, personally.
-For Invaders, I saw an interview in which Steve actually insisted they've played it live, but since there's no proof or recording, he might be confused, like Nicko with Alexander once
- About Only the Good Die Young, during the Seventh Son of a Seventh Tim's listening party, Steve actually said he wanted to play this track live! Maybe we get it after the Future past tour?
- About Judas be my guide, I might be misremembering, but someone in the band said they played it on the rehearsals for the tour, but left it out since they weren't being able to get the groovy feeling in the intro. Truly a shame
I like the senjutsu album, but there's only 2 songs I'd say I really want to hear live. Hell on earth and death of the celts. I think they are epic. However, I'd sooner pick songs from their earlier years that I've never seen live over pretty much any ther song on that album when I see them later this year
