  • Piece of Mind is one of the greatest albums Iron Maiden have ever released. And together with such timeless hits as The Trooper, Where Eagles Dare and Flight of Icarus Iron Maiden also brought to the world an enormous amount of puns and hoaxes associated with Piece of Mind. So, as a part of our Up the Irons Series, let's take a look at the most interesting facts about the 1983 Iron Maiden album, including how the band welcomed Nicko McBrain to the team, discuss its relation to the Hollywood and movies overall, and then discuss how it made Iron Maiden the biggest... troll band in the world of Heavy Metal.

Phenomenal album. Got so excited when the vinyl arrived in the mail. Getting Eddie the Trooper tattooed on my left forearm soon. Favorite song though is To Tame a Land as I love the Dune series of books. Just finished the video and yeah, Revelations is such a great and underrated song. One of my favorite Maiden tunes to play of bass. Powerslave for me is still my favorite to play because that riff is so damn fun to play.

When this came out, for me, some of the songs were hard to get into. I am a 13 yr. old at the time. My two favorites were The Trooper and Die with Your Boots On. As years pass, I found that all the songs on this album are actually really good. To answer your question, Die with Your Boots On is still my favorite song on it. For me it just resonated more than The Trooper at the time. I love The Trooper, it just took me a while to realize the brilliance of the song. I hope that helps. Now though, I have come to appreciate the whole album.

The entire album is perfection. I listened to the cassette non-stop over the winter of 1983 - 1984 which was my senior year of high school. I'm very similar - I saw a TV commercial advertising the Piece of Mind album when I was 14. The commercial had bits of concert footage, and I distinctly remember a quick cut to a close up of Bruce singing, "You'll take my life but I'll take yours too!" I was blown away, and I had to hear more so I went out the next day and bought the album. I became a metal fan that day, more directly, I became a diehard Iron Maiden fan that day. The first concert I ever attended was on January 19th 1985 at the Philadelphia Spectrum - Iron Maiden on the World Slavery Tour. Best memories!

Luckily, my brother had the same album on tape as well, he handed it to me one day and said, " Don't wear this one out!" haha. My husband met Iron Maiden in 2001 at a meet and greet. He has been a Maiden fan since 1983. When my family and I went to lunch one time, my husband took his tour book with him and showed my brother his tour book signed by Maiden. My brother almost drooled on the thing!! LOL. My husband was joking and said, " Don't drool over my tour book, man!" haha. My favorite METAL album ever. I didnt even say Maiden album, it is my number 1 favorite metal album. I remember the day I first heard it. My older brother had an Old Cutlass spray painted black, mag rims, aftermarket upgrades under the hood. The back seat was filled up with home stereo speakers laying side by side where passengers otherwise would be supposed to sit. I was in my brothers badass musclecar with him going way too fast down dirt roads in the middle of nowhere. He was a lot older than me, I was like 8 or 9. I had been into Ozzy Osbourne for a bit, having heard Randy Rhoads play Crazy Train, my older brother bought me the Tribute cassette for christmas. When I heard Maiden blasting out of his backseat I felt that same excitement, the guitar interplay was going right directly to my soul. I told my brother I was digging his music and asked who it was and the rest is history. Glad I lived through those Suicidal backroad cruising trips with that knucklehead. Had I been my parents I would not have allowed me to go anywhere with that longhaired degenerate.
And the answer to best tune?
They are all amazing but I have to say REVELATIONS.

So first things first. This Masterpiece of an album is without doubt their greatest followed closely by Powerslave. I think the thing a lot of people don't understand about metalheads is that in a lot of the genre, it takes a modicum of intellect to see beyond the face value. It's also why back in the day, Iron Maiden was seen as "devil worship". It's been my experience that religious zealots dont often employ critical thinking (but thats just my experience). An interesting fact about the "Flight of Icarus": Icarus was the son of the famous inventor Daedalus. Both men were imprisoned by Minos, the famous Cretan King. In order to escape, Daedalus fabricated two set of wings, made of wax. He warned his son, not to fly close to the Sun, because the heat could melt the wings. Both men escaped, flying. Icarus felt quite confident and he believed that his father was wrong, so he flew as high as he could. He displayed Hubris, aka became arrogant, so the Sun did melted his wings, sending him crushing to the Aegean Sea. Bruce knew the fable, but choose to alter it, to make it about the insane expectations of some parents from their children, that lead the to destruction. Also, the initial version of the song was much faster, and Bruce had to persuade Harris, to slow it down. Keep up the excellent work my friend, stay strong and safe!

There is a moment in the collective Maiden fandom memory that every Maiden fan in the world has shared, although each of those moments happened in different places and at different times for each individual fan. And it goes like this....
"Hey, Maiden has a new drummer. I wonder if he's any good."
(Puts album on, hears opening song with that artillery barrage of an intro and a drum performance that threatens the lives of those with irregular heartbeats.)
    "Oh, my God!!!"
(Stands stupefied, replays "When Eagles Dare" over again before going on with the rest of the album.)
    "Oh, my God!!!"
And btw, Metal Pilgrim, you and I see eye-to-eye on a lot of things about this band and its music. Well done! Keep it up!

1.My favorite track is Revelations, because there a lot of dynamics within the song and the imagery in the lyrics always brings me into the setting.
    2. I was born in 1970 and the song Still Life is what got me into Maiden and it holds a special place for me now
    3. Nicki is somewhat annoying in interviews and not a good songwriter as New Frontier demonstrates, but he is a tremendous drummer and fits in perfectly w/Steve creating an impressive rhythm section!
    4. I love the back cover with door to the padded room open creating the mystery to where did Eddie go
    5. I could do without Quest for Fire and Sun and Steel.

I've been a BIG fan of Maiden since the early 80's when I was a teenager. Flight of Icarus and The Trooper were my favorite songs, BUT, "Still life" was also really good. That "drunken rambling' that Nicko McBrain had recorded, had been hard to understand, BUT, I am pretty sure he mentioned had been "Don't mess with things you don't understand". Iron Maiden has always had great songs on every albumn or CD.

As a teen and in my 20s I'm 53 now, piece of mind I just couldn't stop listening to it. What can you say about where eagles dare, Nickos intro to the band, what a drumming masterpiece that was. Sun and steel the intro riff and rhythm I just love it I don't think they ever played it live, to me its so underrated and a classic tune, and then to tame a land an epic masterpiece. Revelations was a revelation in itself, because it was slower than their normal stuff. I love the whole album, the trooper albeit I think it's overplayed at gigs. It's just the overall vibe and feel, it was raw, it had an old historic feel, it had everything you want from an Iron Maiden album. Must have listened to it 100s of times. I always wished they made another album like it, a piece of mind 2, or a Powerslave 2. 🤘🤘🤘

I have always loved all the 80's Epic songs that Iron Maiden did on their first seven albums, especially Hallowed Be Thy Name, Phantom Of The Opera, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, Alexander The Great, and To Tame A Land. I do love the Epic songs that came out in the 90's up to now, but the 80's songs are just AMAZING.
