  • Iron Maiden's Powerslave is not only one of the fans' favourite album music-wise, but is also the one to feature one of the most complicated and beloved album artwork covers. Designed once again by Derek Riggs Iron Maiden's Powerslave is full of jokes and hidden references planted throughout the artwork. In addition it helped Iron Maiden with its imagery on one of the most successful live tours - World Slavery Tour which to this day is considered one of the best the band ever had.

    Nice video 😀
The "111" is, in my Egyptologist opinion, not "111", but probably three times the sign for "netjer" which means "gods", or three times the sign for "power" which is a vertical scepter with a curved head. So it's probably more something linked to the hieroglyphs themselves rather than 111 ;-)

The death of the LP was one of many tragedies, to come from the rise of digital music. There were several experiences lost such as, the conscious decisions that tied the layout, artwork, and liner notes tied to the music that were almost like an additional product that made the LP a "bonus" product. Being able open the sleeve up and study it while the LP is playing really was such a great experience.

    •  Před 2 lety

      Totaly agree!
Another misgiving of digital music is that rarely anyone listens to all of the songs contained in an album. The complete set of songs and their order, plus the artwork and liner notes is what really makes up an album. It's a very complete experience.

My second favorite Maiden/Riggs album cover after Somewhere in Time (which I have on my wall above my desk - Two LP's put side by side to make the panorama!). I actually prefer the crisp and bright aesthetic to SiT as Mr. Riggs really captured the monumentality and desert bleakness that is so symbolic of Egypt in modern viewers. Powerslave is nothing less than an abrupt about-face for the dark tones of previous album covers, proving that a bright cover can still be just as badass as any Maiden cover.

Really cool fun art. Thank you for doing a video on it. My mom threw it away when I went to college. I did not notice any hidden meanings from it. For me there was enough mystery in the whole God/King/Egypt/Pharoah/Eternity/Pyramid "Slave to the Power of Death" thing that bringing additional or alternative meaning would have undermined what the song Powerslave was saying. Derek did a good job of furthering Iron Maiden's message and not subverting it which helps his reputation now.

After hearing it, I had to go back and get all the other albums, and the singles too (in part for the Derek Riggs artwork). Powerslave was the second album I bought. I got it in a used record shop for $3.00 USD. I still have it! By the way, I think Nassau is pronounced "Nas-saw" not "nuh-sow". The number 111 is actually a pretty funny reference, although deeply numerological, is translated as "reasoning reasoning reasoning," which is of course the reference to 666 the number of the beast, and the biblical quote, "let him who hath understanding recon the number of the beast," or which also means 'to reason' the number of the beast. One interesting note is that the Levites were not enslaved along with the rest of the Jews, but were employed as high priests of Pharoah, and like Moses, chose to join the rest of their brothers in the Exodus from Egypt. Therefore, much of the symbolism and numerology carved into the Egyptian tombs were of archetypal unison.

Powerslave remains the only Maiden album I really enjoyed after Paul Di'Anno's departure, it's the strongest album they released since Killers and the last thing the band released where they did something new in my opinion - admittedly I did give up on the band after Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son which seemed like a huge step backwards to me at the time, but the first album, Killers, Maiden Japan and Powerslave still remain in my record collection

111 must be 666 written in Arabic numbers.
update to answer some comments : by Arabic numbers, I don't mean the numbers we use in western countries and call "arabic numbers", but the digits used in Arabic languages. And as a coincidence, the 6 in Arabic looks similar to the 6 in Hebrew (but not the other digits)... But is it really a coincidence ?
